Mix media creative art production (A body of work composed of five art pieces that talk to Commiseration, sincerity, compassion, and affinity under the subject of depression)Art has always served as a mirror reflecting the depths of the human experience, and that reflection frequently highlights the complex and multidimensional aspects of a global situation on mental health. My path as an artist is intricately linked to my personal battles and victories in overcoming the difficulties of anxiety, depression, and the range of emotions that accompany them. My recent art production adds to a new chapter in a continuous story, of emotional imbalances that affect societies. In my art I strive to convey the vulnerability that is experienced as a glimpse of hope that serve as a reminder of our resilience and those moments of sadness that overwhelms. To capture the chaotic beauty of the mind, I work in a range of builder’s oxide colours. These are pigments that blend to symbolise the emotional disorder and feelings, while spontaneous abstract shapes appear to depict the often-difficult quality of tranquillity and peace. I want people to be instinctively affected by my art and be encouraged to face their own emotions and experiences. I've learned through this creative process that vulnerability is a great strength rather than a weakness. Through my artistic expression, I aspire to foster a feeling of visual dialogue. Although it is a universal factor in the human experience, mental health is a topic that has long been stigmatised. My goal is for my art to spark meaningful conversations by inspiring people to be honest about their personal issues and to ask for help without worrying about being judged. Through the art showcased in this exhibition, I want to encourage a change in the way that we see mental health. My aim is to challenge the myths surrounding mental health and encourage a supportive and empathetic culture. I am determined to use my artistic voice to promote mental health discourse.College of Human SciencesN/

Exploring the utilisation of the investigative psychology section in rape cases of elderly women in the Eastern Cape, South Africa

Abstract in English, Xhosa and AfrikaansThe crime of rape is one of the most invasive crimes to victims. The South African Police Service (SAPS) is mandated to prevent, combat and investigate all crimes, including rape. Rape is classified as one of the crimes against persons. With at least 40 000 rape cases reported to the SAPS annually, it is clear that rape is a problem in South Africa. Often, victims of rape are subjected to physical and verbal violence. Owing to the high prevalence of people living with HIV in South Africa, the effects of rape could lead to sexually transmitted infections such as HIV and unwanted pregnancies. The current definition of rape is gender neutral where both males and women could be victims or perpetrators. There are several role-players who participate during the investigation and prosecution of rape. In South Africa, the investigator who oversees the investigation of rape is a member of a specialised unit called the Family violence, Child protection and Sexual offences (FCS) unit. The FCS investigator during a rape investigation could receive support from role-players such as: first responders, LCRC fieldworkers, medical examiners, FSL analysts, Investigative Psychology Section (IPS) members and prosecutors amongst others. This study provides a detailed analysis on how the IPS could add value in the investigation of rape of elderly women. At least 122 rape cases in the Eastern Cape had women victims which were 60 years or older at the time the rape was reported to the SAPS. The IPS has three interlinked roles, namely: Forensic Psychology, Investigative Support and Research and Development. Clinical Psychologists, Criminologists, specialist investigators, researchers and trainers are attached to the v IPS. The study addresses the roles and responsibilities of IPS with the viewpoint of supporting the investigation of rape of elderly women. The study further explores the phenomenon of psychologically motivated crimes, of which rape is one type of these crimes including serial rape, murder, serial murder, muti murder, sexual murder, intimate partner murder, sexual burglaries, auto-erotic fatalities and child pornography possession. The sensation of gerontophilia is examined as a possible contributor to elderly women being targeted in rape cases. In this study, the researcher developed a conceptual sequential multidisciplinary process flow framework for elderly rape cases which he proposes to the management of SAPS for consideration. Other proposals include: a proposed IPS organisational structure for the IPS; a proposed structure for Research and Development in the IPS; a proposed provincial organisational structure; a proposed inclusion of PMC courses in training; proposed modifications to MySAPS mobile application and its step-by-step activation of rape role-players. The researcher is of the view that should the proposals suggested in this study be accepted and implemented, the investigation of rape of elderly women would receive the much-needed support from various strategic role-players. Such support would improve detection, arrests and conviction of elderly rape perpetrators.Ulwaphulomthetho lodlwengulo lolona lwaphulomthetho oluhlasela amaxhoba. Inkonzo yesiPolisa yoMzantsi Afrika (iSAPS) igunyaziswa ukuba ithintele, ilwe ize iphande ulwaphulomthetho lulonke, kuquka udlwengulo. Udlwengulo luhlelwa njengolunye lolwaphulomthetho olujoliswe ebantwini. Ngokumalunga nama40 000 amatyala odlwengulo axelwa kwiSAPS rhoqo ngonyaka, kuyacaca ukuba udlwengulo luyingxaki eMzantsi Afrika. Amaxhoba odlwengulo adla ngokujongana nobundlobongela ngokwasemzimbeni nangokwamazwi. Ngenxa yokuxhaphaka vi okuphezulu kwabantu abaphila neHIV eMzantsi Afrika, iziphumo zodlwengulo zinokukhokelela kwizifo ezosulela ngokwabelana ngesondo ezifana neHIV nokukhulelwa okungafunwayo. Udlwengulo kule mihla lungachazwa njengolungathathi cala ngokwesini apho amadoda kunye nabasetyhini banokuba ngamaxhoba okanye babe ngabo abadlwengulayo. Baliqela abadlalindima abathatha inxaxheba ngexesha lophando nelotshutshiso lodlwengulo. EMzantsi Afrika, umphandi owongamela uphando lodlwengulo lilungu lecandelo elikhethekileyo elibizwa ngokuba licandelo lobundlobongela phakathi koSapho, ukhuseleko lwaBantwana kunye nolwaphulomthetho ngokweSondo (iFCS). Umphandi weFCS ngexesha lophando lodlwengulo angafumana inkxaso kubadlalindima abafana naba balandelayo: abaphenduli bokuqala, abasebenzi beLCRC abasebenza ngaphandle, abaxilongi bezonyango, abahlalutyi beFSL, amalungu eCandelo loPhando ngeziFundonzulu ngengqondo (i-IPS) kunye nabatshutshisi phakathi kwabanye. Olu phando lunika uhlalutyo olugabalala malunga nokuba i-IPS inganegalelo njani kuphando lodlwengulo lwabasetyhini abasebadala.

    Search for non-resonant Higgs boson pair production in the 2 b + 2 ℓ + E T miss 2b+2+ETmiss 2b+2\ell +{E}_{\textrm{T}}^{\textrm{miss}} final state in pp collisions at s s \sqrt{s} = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Abstract A search for non-resonant Higgs boson pair (HH) production is presented, in which one of the Higgs bosons decays to a b-quark pair ( b b ¯ bb b\overline{b} ) and the other decays to WW*, ZZ*, or τ+τ−, with in each case a final state with ℓ+ℓ−+ neutrinos (ℓ = e, μ). The analysis targets separately the gluon-gluon fusion and vector boson fusion production modes. Data recorded by the ATLAS detector in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1, are used in this analysis. Events are selected to have exactly two b-tagged jets and two leptons with opposite electric charge and missing transverse momentum in the final state. These events are classified using multivariate analysis algorithms to separate the HH events from other Standard Model processes. No evidence of the signal is found. The observed (expected) upper limit on the cross-section for non-resonant Higgs boson pair production is determined to be 9.7 (16.2) times the Standard Model prediction at 95% confidence level. The Higgs boson self-interaction coupling parameter κλ and the quadrilinear coupling parameter κ2V are each separately constrained by this analysis to be within the ranges [−6.2, 13.3] and [−0.17, 2.4], respectively, at 95% confidence level, when all other parameters are fixed

Computer Science students’ perceptions of social presence related to student retention in online degree programmes : a quantitative ex post facto correlational study

    Get PDF
Abstracts in English, Xhosa and AfrikaansThis study was an examination of the relationship between social presence, student satisfaction, and persistence in online computer science undergraduate degree programmes. The problem is twofold: how social presence is perceived by students and the extent to which those perceptions relate to persistence and satisfaction related to the problem of attrition in online undergraduate computer science degree programmes. This study is significant because it seeks to address two interrelated objectives: firstly, to specifically examine perceptions of social presence (and how it relates to persistence and satisfaction) among students who have studied computer science online, and secondly, to contribute research to the body of literature seeking to validate measures of the social presence construct. As a quantitative ex post facto correlational study using archival data from the Computing Research Association’s Center for Evaluating the Research Pipeline (CERP) Data Buddies dataset, Spearman’s rank procedure was applied to test non-normal data that did not meet assumptions tests. All three null hypotheses were rejected (p < 0.01). The findings suggested a significant positive relationship between composite social presence scores and persistence and satisfaction ratings among online computer science students. The post hoc procedures revealed weak effect sizes but strong power due to the large sample size (n = 1,646). The three subconstructs, social presence, sociability, and social space, were found to have strong internal consistency and reliability. The findings suggest that students with a higher social presence in online courses tend to persist in their studies and are more satisfied. However, the weak correlation coefficient and size of the effect suggest that other factors may also influence students’ experiences in online undergraduate computer science degree programmes and that social presence should not be overestimated as a unilateral factor related to student persistence and satisfaction. This study’s findings are consistent with previous research on social presence theory and the Community of Inquiry framework. Limitations include a correlational design, non-normality of data, nonparametric tests, small effect sizes, and a narrow scope of measures. By addressing a problem in computer science education, this study might inspire constructive changes in instructional practices by technology educators, especially those teaching computer science online.Olu phando luphonononge ubudlelwane phakathi kokuba yinxalenye yoluntu kwi-intanethi, ukwaneliseka kwabafundi, kunye nokuzingisa kwiinkqubo zangeintanethi zemfundo yesidanga sokuqala sezeNzululwazi yeKhompyutha. Iinkqubo zasemva kwesiganeko zibonise ubungakanani befuthe elibuthathaka kodwa zikwabonise namandla amakhulu ngenxa yobukhulu besampuli (n = 1 646). Nangona kunjalo, ukuba buthathaka kokuhambelana kwamanani andisayo kunye nobungakanani befuthe kubonisa ukuba eminye imiba inganempembelelo kumava abafundi kwiinkqubo zangeintanethi zesidanga sezeNzululwazi yeKhompyutha, kwaye ukuba yinxalenye yoluntu kwi-intanethi akufanelekanga ukuba kuqikelelwe ngokugqithiseleyo nanjengempembelelo enye enxulumene nokuzingisa nokwaneliseka kwabafundi. Iziphumo zolu phando ziyahambelana nophando lwangaphambili malunga nethiyori yokuba yinxalenye yoluntu kwi-intanethi kunye nesikhokelo seCommunity of Inquiry. Izithintelo zibandakanya uyilo lokuhambelana, ukungabikho kwisiqhelo kwedatha, iimvavanyo ezenza iingqikelelo ezimbalwa (nonparametric tests), ubungakanani bobuncinane befuthe, kunye nobumxinwa bommandla wemilinganiselo. Development of Open Education Resources to Teach Oral History: Perspectives of a Sports Heritage-Engaged Scholarship Initiative in Gauteng, South Africa

    Get PDF
Gaps exist in archival practices, and developments are in progress to decolonise and transform archives by supplementing existing archival collections with oral history accounts. This is a recent development in the archival field, requiring archivists and records managers to become aware of how oral history collections should be undertaken to preserve testimonies related to socio-economic, sociopolitical, and cultural events not yet captured by South African public archivists. An open educational resource (OER) was developed in 2022 as part of an engaged scholarship initiative to instruct archivists on oral history research techniques and how to apply research ethics when undertaking such projects. The research paradigm for this study was a postmodernist qualitative study. Action-based research was used in the research design. Action research is a flexible methodology uniquely suited to research and support change. It integrates social research with exploratory actions to promote development. Action research outcomes are both practical and theoretical. The knowledge it generates directly and continuously impacts the changing practices of the participants. Data from participants were collected through recorded project workshops and meetings. The content for the OER was developed from observing online videos showcasing oral history interviews, consulting literature on OER development, and discussions with archivists and heritage collectors at the South African National Film, Video and Sound Archives, the South African National Parks Board, and the Gauteng Provincial Archives. The OER was developed to enable collaboration to ensure that the oral narratives of postcolonial Africa, particularly post-apartheid South Africa, are not lost but captured by the public archives’ services for the benefit of South Africans and other interested stakeholders.Information Scienc

Measurement of the total and differential cross-sections of t t ¯ W ttW t\overline{t}W production in pp collisions at s s \sqrt{s} = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Abstract Measurements of inclusive and differential production cross-sections of a top-quark-top-antiquark pair in association with a W boson ( t t ¯ W ttW t\overline{t}W ) are presented. They are performed by targeting final states with two same-sign or three isolated leptons (electrons or muons) and are based on s s \sqrt{s} = 13 TeV proton-proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1, recorded from 2015 to 2018 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The inclusive t t ¯ W ttW t\overline{t}W production cross-section is measured to be 880 ± 80 fb, compared to a reference theoretical prediction of 745 ± 50 (scale) ± 13 (2-loop approx.) ± 19 (PDF, αs) fb. Differential cross-section measurements characterise this process in detail for the first time. Several particle-level observables are compared with a variety of theoretical predictions, which generally agree well with the normalised differential cross-section results. Additionally, the relative charge asymmetry of t t ¯ W + ttW+ t\overline{t}{W}^{+} and t t ¯ W − ttW t\overline{t}{W}^{-} is measured inclusively to be A C rel ACrel {A}_{\textrm{C}}^{\textrm{rel}} = 0.33 ± 0.05, in very good agreement with the theoretical prediction of 0.322 ± 0.003 (scale) ± 0.007 (PDF), as well as differentially

Exploring the resilience of religious belief : cognitive, cultural and historical perspectives

    Get PDF
This thesis investigates the foundations of religious beliefs and their persistence in contemporary society through a systematic literature review. It examines how cognitive predispositions (mentalising, anthropomorphism, teleological thinking) and biological factors (genetics, brain structure, neurochemistry) shape the formation of religious beliefs, which are then influenced by cultural forces. The Cognitive Science of Religion provides insights into how cognitive biases reinforce misleading beliefs. This thesis proposes promoting logic education to foster rational thought and critical engagement as a countermeasure. Although rational inquiry is crucial in a world saturated with information, for some, scientific discoveries may not offer the same sense of wonder, meaning, or purpose that religious beliefs have historically provided. This explains the continued endurance of such belief systems alongside scientific progress. As scientific advancements challenge traditional sources of meaning, individuals struggle with the existential question of purpose. In such a context, this thesis argues for prioritising individual freedom in seeking meaning. Finally, the thesis contends that although some aspects of metaphysics may transcend empirical methods, this does not preclude evidence-based research from engaging with supernatural claims. Society must strive to balance the pursuit of objective knowledge with preserving cultural richness and existential fulfilment.D. Phil. (Theology)Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiolog

The role of workplace well-being initiatives in promoting employee well-being and training transfer in Seventh-Day Adventist Institutions in Cameroon : a conceptual model

    No full text
Abstract in English, Afrikaans and IsiZuluThe purpose of this study was to elucidate the role of workplace well-being initiatives in promoting employee well-being and training transfer in Seventh-Day Adventist institutions (SDAI) in Cameroon and to portray this understanding in a conceptual model entitled “Role of workplace well-being initiatives in promoting employee well-being and training transfer”. The importance of both employee well-being and training transfer became evident to me during my experience as a human resource manager, and the importance of these concepts was confirmed by the literature. On the one hand, the literature on employee well-being highlights its importance and informs the role that workplace well-being initiatives play in promoting employee well-being. On the other hand, the literature on training and training transfer reveals its importance for organisational success and informs the role that a motivation to transfer triggered by a motivational factor plays in order for training transfer to take place. To achieve the objective of the study, a qualitative research design was used along with an interactive approach. Interviews were held in 11 focus groups to explore the perceptions of 67 employees on training, training transfer and employee well-being in SDAI in Cameroon. In addition, 12 managers participated in individual interviews to express their points of view. Data analysis was then carried out and it was found that well-being is strengthened by resources and weakened by challenges. Moreover, well-being results in positive outcomes for both employees and the organisation. It was also discovered that training is an activity aimed at the improvement of knowledge, skills and abilities and the promotion of the right attitude to face challenges. Training can result in positive outcomes for both employees and the organisation in an environment suitable for training transfer. Besides, some workplace well-being initiatives can produce motivation to transfer, thereby encouraging training transfer. Nevertheless, the capacity of workplace well-being initiatives to promote training transfer depends on the individual employee. These findings, which were framed by an interactive approach, were tested using a deductive approach. They allowed for the construction of a conceptual model on the role of workplace well-being initiatives in promoting employee well-being and training transfer, with a specific emphasis on SDAI in Cameroon. Inhloso yalolu cwaningo kwakuwukucacisa indima yezinhlelo zempilo enhle emsebenzini ekukhuthazeni inhlalakahle yabasebenzi kanye nokudluliselwa kokuqeqeshwa ezikhungweni ze-Seventh-Day Adventist (SDAI) eCameroon kanye nokuveza lokhu kuqonda esifanekisweni somqondo esinesihloko esithi “indima yezinhlelo zempilo enhle emsebenzini ekukhuthazeni inhlalakahle yabasebenzi kanye nokudluliselwa kokuqeqeshwa”. Financial sustainability model for the South African telecommunication industry

    No full text
Text in EnglishThere is limited research on the intricate dynamics inherent in the telecommunications industry that affect the financial sustainability of mobile operators in many countries including South Africa. This study aimed to explore the factors that influence the financial sustainability of South African mobile operators. The study used purposive sampling to identify executives in mobile telecommunication companies who participated in this study. Qualitative data were collected through interviews while secondary quantitative data came from selected financial data from 2016 to 2020 to analyse the financial sustainability of the selected mobile operators in South Africa over time. Thematic analysis and financial ratios were used to analyse the data. Six themes identified to depict the financial sustainability of the South African mobile telco industry focusing on Vodacom, MTN, and Cell C were: clarity of mission to government as a key stakeholder, strategic flexibility in turbulent times, strategic innovation and growth in an adjacent market, investment in network infrastructure for quality and spectrum, managing ambidexterity and dealing with the risk of bypass. Furthermore, the study revealed that market complexity and dynamics putting pressure on financial sustainability; re-enforcing collaboration for resilience, the pressure of building individual and organisational capacity for the future and dealing with the difficulties of spectrum scarcity and its consequences were key in evaluating the impact of the competitive environment on the financial sustainability. The results show that there was the influence of regulation on financial performance evident through spectrum allocation, price control, and collaboration with stakeholders. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic on the financial sustainability of the telco industry mobile operators accelerated digitisation, increased data revenue, exploited market opportunities for data revenue growth, changed operating strategy, and injected a sense of urgency. Given the above results on financial sustainability, the study has proposed a financial sustainability model for telco mobile operators. This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge on financial sustainability by proposing a framework of financial sustainability relevant and useful to executives to assess and enhance the financial sustainability of their telco organisations to achieve competitive advantage in a volatile, uncertain, and complex environment. The results of this study are limited to the cases or sampled mobile operators, and the research only focused on the South African telco industry. Future research is recommended to empirically test the proposed model and validate the financial sustainability of the telco industry in contexts outside South Africa and other industries.Ph. D. International migration and employment, the case of foreign nationals in Dunoon, Cape Town, South Africa

    Get PDF
This research was focused on assessing the relationship between international migration and employment in Dunoon, Cape Town, South Africa. This assessment was essential to determine the reasons for such an increase in international migration and to understand their reasons for migration. This study showed that there are both push and pull factors for international migration. This study focused on participants from five African countries that are currently residing in Dunoon. These are Zimbabweans, Congolese (DRC), Malawians, Nigerians and Cameroonians. The findings of this study showed that there are three main determinants of international migration, that is, economic, social and political. These foreign nationals are faced with both positive and negative aspects as international migrants in Dunoon, and despite the negatives they still view South Africa as a good host country. This is demonstrated by the fact that the majority of the research participants do not intend to return to their home countries.Development Studie
