Power Transformer’s Fault Prognosis
Determination of power transformer’s technical
condition is directly dependent upon the diagnostic
measurements included in maintenance strategy. Projections of
capital needed in future required to maintain reliable service
across the power system, are enormous and beyond the financial
capacity of many of the relatively newly formed transmission and
distribution companies. For that reason condition-based
maintenance strategy (CBM) is useful along with prognostics and
health management (PHM). Therefore this paper describes
cooperation between two mentioned maintenance strategies
wherewith lifetime assessment properties
Knowledge Creation: Action Research in E-Learning Teams
The present article analyses the research results of the effectiveness of a comparatively new but a widely studied learning method — action research — in e-learning project-based (PBL) group studies. The objective of the article is to identify the main principles of collaborative work in an e-learning environment: (1) what effect the students’ involvement in the action research method which is based on creating personal knowledge via reflection has on acquiring the course, (2); how to measure and assess the students’ creativity, (3); how collaboration within the group influences the development of interests. The methods of statistical and qualitative analysis as well as systemic content analysis of the students’ work are used in the article. We propose this method as an effective tool for engineering education

Project Management Knowledge Retrieval: Project Classification
Project management knowledge contains a wide range of information that can be accumulated from theory and practice. This knowledge is not always readily available to project manager and that can leave a significant impact on project management efficiency and success. Therefore, this knowledge is necessary to store in the project management knowledge repository and then to retrieve it when necessary. To find this knowledge it is necessary to define attributes for searching relevant projects and knowledge associated with these projects. The objective of this paper is to develop a set of project classification attributes that can be used to describe project characteristics and use them in similarity definition. The project classification attributes are defined as a part of the architecture of project management knowledge retrieval. They are identified by analyzing several project management methodologies and are validated by classifying twenty two empirical information technology project
Experimental Study on Creep of New Concrete Mixtures
The aim of this study was to experimentally investigate the creep behavior of developed concrete compositions in order to evaluate the possibility of using glass powder and small clay particles as active additives in concrete by replacing cement. Several concrete mixes were designed and prepared, then 160x40x40mm specimens of each batch were made and tested. Specimens were subjected to a uniform compression load kept constant over a long period of time in a constant room temperature and with a constant level of moisture. Specimens were hardened in two extreme environments: in one case there was 100% humidity provided by protecting the specimens from desiccation and in the other case specimens were air-dried and protected from any moisture. Compression strength and modulus of elasticity of developed concrete mixes were determined and compared with those of reference concret
Using Use Cases for Domain Modeling
This paper demonstrates the Use Case Builder tool and discusses its purpose and design. Previous results show that Use Cases can be analyzed by means of natural language processing (NLP) and rules can be defined for validating use cases against a given Ontology. By using this approach it is possible to acquire formally defined knowledge for transformation to a Computation Independent Model (CIM) in Model Driven Architecture (MDA). Use Case Builder provides a facility to define the use cases according to the integrated domain modeling approach, which is described in this paper. The goal is to provide a formal base for generating CIM with the possibility of tracing the transformation from Use Cases to the corresponding Topological Functioning Model (TFM)

A Case Study – Production Cost Expertise of Sewn Articles
The present unstable economic conditions, when the whole world has been taken over by the crisis, have affected Latvia too, including the Latvian textile and sewing industry. In a time when the number and volume of orders has shrunk, the manufacturers often declare unjustified high production costs in the overall article production cost calculations, thereby masking the profits per one unit, to maintain their companies. In market conditions where a manufacturer works with a customer who works in the textile field and has knowledge of all its production nuances, the inclusion of unjustified high costs in the calculations is almost impossible. In its turn if the customer is a state department that has no knowledge of the production, but provides the company with a stable flow of orders and guaranteed payments for the produced articles according to an uncontrolled estimate within a long period of time, the state can suffer from significant unjustified costs. The article reflects the sewn article production cost expertise process (production costs not including the cloth value), consequently developing an algorithm for such type of expertise
Comparative Analysis of Chemical Composition and Technological Properties of Flax Fibers from Different Species
Non-wood plant fibres become important raw materials not only for textiles, but for other industrial sectors too, as they offer several advantages including low density, short growing cycles, biodegradability, and quite high cellulose content. Technology performance of ligno-cellulose fibres in a range of applications highly depends on relative content of constituents, mechanical and physical properties of fibres. Content of non-cellulose components and their transition during dew-retting, and main physical and mechanical characteristics of fibres of two flax lines grown in Latvia at 2010 are evaluated and compared with the corresponding properties of ES flax varieties grown in Poland at 2011
