    Energy Efficiency Improvement Potential in Historical Brick Building

    – Energy efficiency in historical heritage buildings is viewed as a taboo because these buildings usually are protected under law and no energy efficiency measures that would change the appearance of the building are allowed. In this paper we look at the potential of increasing energy efficiency level in historical buildings. Measurements to determine energy efficiency of a historical brick building have been done, which also give the possibility to determine the potential of energy efficiency measures in this building

    В процессе данной научной работы была предложена инновационная структура тканых протезов кровеносных сосудов. Главной целью данного исследования являлось производство образцов протезов измененной геометрической формы с целью улучшения процесса гемодинамики. В процессе реализации практической части проекта были изготовлены образцы тканых трубчатых имплантов различных диаметров, имеющих высокие деформационные свойства. Предложенная структура стенки позволяет данным протезам достигать очень хороших биомеханических показателей в процессе естественной гемодинамической пульсации, в том числе продольной и радиальной упругой деформации. Образцы тканых протезов были изготовлены при помощи сложного переплетения. В качестве нитей основы и утка в данном случае применялись полиэфирные и полиуретановые нити малой линейной плотности. На первом этапе научно-практической работы были изготовлены линейные трубчатые протезы, а на втором – бифуркационные. В процессе производства бифуркационных протезов был использован ранее запатентованный метод, который предусматривает увеличение диаметра главного ствола импланта на 15-20% за 2-3 см до его разветвления. Это обеспечивает соответственное увеличение диаметров бифуркационных ответвлений. Данная инновация структуры стенки и геометрической формы протеза была предложена с целью нормализации процесса гемодинамики и исключения возможных турбулентных завихрений кровяного потока в зоне бифуркации, характерных при практическом применении традиционных коммерческих протезов. Изготовленные образцы протезов в дальнейшем были пропитаны раствором биологически активных препаратов и протестированы в лабораторных условиях на водопроницаемость стенки, а также на биомеханические свойства. Результаты экспериментов показали, что в порах изделия образовавшиеся мембраны обеспечивают нулевую водопроницаемость, а сами протезы обладают высокой продольной и поперечной деформацией, показатели которой близки эластичным свойствам кровеносных сосудов человека. На последнем этапе настоящего проекта были проведены испытания образцов протезов на животных в ветеринарной клинике Латвийского Сельскохозяйственного университета. Через шесть месяцев после имплантации протезов была произведена их эксплантация и гистологические исследования. Результаты гистологических исследований подтвердили, что протезы хорошо врастают и адаптируются в живом организме, обеспечивая стабильный кровоток после подключения к общей кровеносной системе

The paper deals with the determination of values of geometric parameters for optimal design of mansard in the buildings with gable roof during both building renovation and planning a new design. The optimization analysis regarding the useful floor area or available mansard volume is performed with respect to the angle of the slope of roof planes. Obtained nomograms will allow architects and customers make the final decision on building’s roof concept at the early design stage based on both economic considerations and architectonic impressions

    Institutional economics argue that institutions are the fundamental cause of differences in socioeconomic development. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the impact of institutions (measured as values and dimensions of governance) on the socioeconomic development in factor-driven, efficiency-driven and innovation-driven economies. The results of the analysis approve that institutions measured as values and the dimensions of governance play an important role in socioeconomic performance. But the importance of specific institutions depends on the socioeconomic development level of the economy. It should be taken into account when shaping public policies to improve institutional environment in a specific territory. It is especially important for post-soviet countries like Latvia because of a different historical and cultural experience

    Natural Organic Matter Removal from Water and Its Influence on the Water Quality in Distribution Network

    Due to relatively cold climate and an abundance of soils rich in organic carbon, the concentration of natural organic matter (NOM) in raw water of Boreal region is high and its removal during conventional water treatment is complicated. This thesis show possibility to determine the NOM removal efficacy during humic rich raw water treatment using inexpensive chemical methods, which allow detection of specific organic compounds removal efficiency during each water treatment stage. During monitoring of the water treatment process the correction necessary to optimize the coagulation process of humic rich water was determined. In this research the degradation rate of biodegradable dissolved organic carbon in different type of water produced from humic rich raw waters was determined and factors affecting biodegradation rate were evaluated. Results indicate that NOM significantly affects water quality in water distribution network, where the NOM accumulation in loose deposits of water supply system and biological degradation processes as a result of inefficient operation of biological filter takes place

    Groundwater Flow Balance of the Gauja River Basin District

    In 2010–2012, the hydrogeological model of Latvia (LAMO) was developed by scientists of Riga Technical University. The commercial program “Groundwater Vistas” is used for running LAMO. In 2013, data provided by LAMO have been used for the mapping of the Gauja/Koiva River basin district. The materials on the mapping have also included information about groundwater flow balances of the district. The flow balances of Latvia and the Gauja district have been considered. The flow balances of groundwater bodies of the district have been analysed. The flow balances provide new knowledge on the complex interaction between surface water (rivers, lakes, sea, precipitation) and groundwater
