Family firms' investment in and implementation of Industry 4.0: A social capital theoretical perspective

    No full text
The fourth industrial revolution (I4.0) is critically relevant to the future of busi-ness management. In this study, we theoretically examine I4.0 investment andimplementation from a social capital perspective. By explicating the various formsof social capital in family firms—namely, family-owned, family-managed, multi-generational, and single-generation family firms—we offer a deep reflection onthe heterogeneity of social capital in the world’s most common form of organiza-tion. Our theoretical reasoning culminates in a model that delineates four proposi-tions, each corresponding to a specific form of social capital and its relevance tothe drivers of I4.0 investment and implementation. Subsequently, we establishconceptual links between the I4.0 and family social capital literature, contributingto knowledge by advancing three streams of the literature. First, within the familysocial capital literature, we offer a better understanding of the boundary condi-tions of social capital, a deeper reflection on its heterogeneity, and a shift in focusfrom its impact on firm performance to its role in knowledge creation for I4.0.Second, within the family firm literature, we unpack the importance of the genera-tional element in I4.0 investment and implementation. Third, within the I4.0 liter-ature, we offer fresh insights from a sociological perspective that complementexisting technological perspectives. Our study also provides directions for futureresearch for scholars looking to advance this domai

‘The bilingual problem’. Nationalism and the language question in Canada (1791–1915)

    No full text
Although English and French now have equal status in Canada, bilingualism and the language question have been the cause of heated debates in the history of the country, which, since the Treaty of Paris of 1763, has been characterised by the close coexistence of two profoundly different social groups, one francophone and Roman Catholic, the other anglophone and Protestant. While the foundations for present-day bilingualism were implicitly laid by the Constitutional Act of 1791 and reiterated in the Constitution Act of 1867, it was the English language, and the British model, that continued to be promoted as the official language of government. Moreover, during the late-19th and early-20th centuries a number of legislative acts across Canada restricted French-language education and the use of French itself outside of Quebec. As the popular media have always played an important role in representing, shaping and guiding public opinion, the paper investigates, following the methodologies of historical discourse analysis and historical sociopragmatics, the extent to which the language question surfaced in some of the most popular English language magazines published in Canada between the late-18th and early-20th centuries, and, specifically, how the relationship between language and nation was framed and discussed in such publications

Mind, Matter, and Freedom in Quantum Mechanics and the de Broglie–Bohm Theory

    No full text
There are several important philosophical problems to which quantum mechanics is often said to have made significant contributions: Determinism: quantum theory has been taken to refute determinism; Free Will: in turn, this is thought to open the door to free will; The mind-body problem: relatedly, it is sometimes said to shed light on consciousness; Idealism: more radically, quantum theory is assumed to have refuted realism and to have placed the observer at the centre of the world; Reductionism: even granting realism, it has been claimed that quantum theory undermines reductionism. Our main thesis in this paper is that none of this is either necessary or desirable. By adopting the de Broglie–Bohm theory (or Bohmian mechanics), one can straightforwardly account for quantum phenomena without endorsing any of these claims

Does entrepreneurial learning translate into personal initiative in the workplace? A role congruity perspective

Drawing on role congruity theory (RCT), we posit that entrepreneurial learning (EL) fosters employees' personal initiative (PI) due to the congruity between entrepreneurial qualities and the employee role. We further investigate contingencies that shape such congruity, thereby affecting the EL-PI relationship: individual-level (gender) and firm-level (size and age) characteristics. Using data from 5,564 working students drawn from the "Global University Entrepreneurial Spirit Students' Survey" (GUESSS), our regression analyses confirm that EL fosters PI. This effect is more positive for male employees, since gendered role expectations limit the congruity between entrepreneurial qualities and PI in females. Additionally, the positive EL-PI relationship is more pronounced in employees in larger and older firms, as the employee roles in these organizations display greater congruity with entrepreneurial qualities. Our findings extend research on EL, which has traditionally focused on new venture creation, by showing that EL enhances employees' PI in existing organizations

Implications of Artificial Intelligence for the Labour Market

    No full text
Technological innovation has inevitably transformed the management of labor relations. Assuming that generative artificial intelligence (AI) is more likely to integrate into existing jobs rather than eliminate them, automation significantly impacts work performance, changing its intensity and mode due to new Al-driven organizational models. Additionally, Al alters traditional employer powers in organi- zation, management, and control, introducing new risks for workers. These risks have significant implications for data processing, monitoring, and evaluation methods, potentially affecting worker privacy and job security. Considering these premises, the article aims to explore the evolving landscape of labor relations in the age of AI and highlights the need for policies that balance innovation with worker protections

Francesismi, giochi di parole, acrostici: alcune sfide traduttive del Tristan di Gottfried Von Straßburg

"Tristan" by Gottfried von Straßburg exhibits a rich array of formal and semantic elements that challenge the boundaries of translatability and invite ongoing critical reflection. Drawing on a series of translation experiences, this study explores the role these elements play in the delicate balance between textual layers, as well as in the dialogue between the translated text and its paratextual components

L'architettura della visione nel racconto breve di Beppe Fenoglio

    No full text

Structural Investigation through Digital Modelling of Two Domes by Ferdinando Crivelli

    No full text
Domes were one of the features that made religious buildings grandiose and, with their imposing presence, often defined city skylines. However, before the development of modern construction science, building domes presented a significant challenge to builders, often resulting in numerous designs and revisions that delayed completion by decades, if not centuries. The vulnerability of these structures means they remain one of the most delicate aspects of restoration and consolidation work. For this reason, it is particularly important to understand how they behave. The study of two 19th-century domes designed by Ferdinando Crivelli in Bergamo — the cathedral dome and the church of S. Andrea dome — demonstrates how three-dimensional digital modelling can be used as a valuable preliminary tool in assessing the behaviour of these structures

An evidence-based integrated process framework of borderline personality disorder clinical features: Insights from the general population

Background: Empirical and clinical models of borderline personality disorder (BPD) have hypothesized different core dimensions that should explain its phenotypic variability. Nevertheless, no previous studies have directly explored how these dimensions might interplay in capturing BPD features. The current study investigated the role of emotional dysregulation (ED), behavioral dysregulation (BD), dissociative processes reflecting altered self functioning (ASF) and interpersonal sensitivity (IS) in predicting a probable diagnosis of BPD and its clinical features. Methods: A sample of 694 adults from the general population was recruited. An online self-report assessment battery composed of SCID-5-BPD, DERS, UPPS-P, DES-II and RSQ-A was administered. The analyses were based on the application of logistic regression, structural equation modeling (SEM) and path analysis. Results: ED had the largest predictive power for BPD diagnosis and each BPD criterion compared to the other dimensions, followed by DOS and BD. IS had an incremental predictive power for BPD diagnosis and affective BPD criteria above and beyond the effects of ED, ASF and BD. SEM and path analysis showed that these dimensions were organized around internalizing (ED, ASF, IS) and externalizing (BD) factors significantly correlated to each other. The internalizing factor had the most influential impacts in predicting BPD psychopathology. Conclusion: These findings provisionally supported an integration of the most influential clinical models of BPD considering how ED, ASF, BD and IS interplay to each other in capturing the clinical variability of this condition. Future clinical and longitudinal studies are needed to corroborate the current insights from the general population

The Castelluccio of Gela: from documentation to digital rediscovery

    No full text
This paper focuses on the investigations carried out at the Castelluccio di Gela: a 13th-century fortified complex set within the landscape of southern Sicily. Strategically positioned on a gypsum outcrop, the structure is today almost neglected, despite the conservation treatment a rudere undertaken between the late 1980s and the early 1990s. The research presented here seeks to advance knowledge of the site by integrating state-of-the-art digital techniques into processes of survey, interpretation, and representation. The methodological framework combines historical-architectural enquiry with the potential of digital recording and modelling technologies. A high-precision architectural and geometric survey was conducted using a combination of terrestrial laser scanning and both aerial and ground-based photogrammetry. The resulting dataset was processed to generate a comprehensive 3D model of the complex, supporting both the analysis of decay and the planning of interventions for conservation and architectural requalification. The approach adopted is non-invasive and respectful of the site’s historical fabric. The design proposal envisions a coherent strategy that incorporates new contemporary architectural devices, such as suspended walkways and lightweight shelters, alongside digital reconstructions and interactive conceptual models for virtual reality applications. The outcome is an enhanced mode of heritage engagement: accessible, immersive, and narrative, capable of conveying not only the architectural configuration but also the historical, symbolic, and landscape values embedded in the monument. The contribution intends to demonstrate how a multidisciplinary, innovation-oriented methodology can transform a deserted heritage asset into a dynamic cultural experience, aligning survey, visualisation, and interpretation within a unified and scientifically grounded design vision
