Daily physical activity in patients with a chronic disease
Regular physical activity is important for patients with a chronic disease, because it can decrease the progression of the disease and improves quality of life. Not only exercise has beneficial health effects, but also daily physical activity such as walking, cycling, and gardening. This dissertation describes five studies aimed at daily physical activity in patients with a chronic disease. Those studies have demonstrated that despite the important role of physical activity in the management of chronic diseases, most patients do not increase their physical activity after diagnosis. This dissertation shows that many patients with a chronic disease such as heart disease or Parkinson’s disease are not meeting the recommended levels of physical activity, and that there is a large variability in physical activity between patients. The level of physical activity can be determined by numerous different factors, but this dissertation suggests that the disease itself is not the most important factor. Finally, a few recommendations are formulated. First, in order to exactly evaluate the amount of physical activity in patients, current guidelines must be more concrete, individually tailored, and disease specific. Second, it is recommended to use performance based methods to measure physical activity and to follow literature based guidelines regarding (pre)processing accelerometer data as much as possible. This will allow researchers and health care providers to compare physical activity of patients between different studies. Lastly, this dissertation emphasizes that health care providers should take more responsibility for stimulating inactive patients to become more physically active in daily life.

Reasoning about self and others
The topic of this dissertation is how people reason about the minds of others, their beliefs, desires, and intentions. Such reasoning is required in social interactions when we are trying to understand other people’s behavior.
Whereas previous research seems to imply that ‘social reasoning’ is complex and limited by cognitive resources, we show that it is susceptible to improvement. Our research shows that cognitive limitations can be alleviated by relatively simple measures, such as stepwise instruction, visual cues, and interactive prompts. Furthermore, additional findings seem to hint at the possibility that suboptimal performance might not be due to limited cognitive capacity, but due to suboptimal strategies instead. The previously mentioned measures might be beneficial here as well: Help people discover and apply better strategies when reasoning about the minds of others.
The most important finding of this dissertation is that people do not interpret social interactions as formal or logical problems without considering mental states, such as beliefs, desires, and intentions. For example, a rational computer opponent in a game is still considered differently than an equivalent mechanical device, even if the outcome is the same in both situations. Moreover, playing a game from someone else’s perspective is more complicated than playing the same game oneself. In other words, social reasoning really is about the minds of others. As such, it is a unique cognitive skill.

How does power corrupt? : The way individual and institutional support of social hierarchies influences unethical behaviour
ABSTRACT
A universal aspect of human behavior is the tendency to establish and negotiate
social hierarchies supporting power and status inequalities. Previous research linked the
support of social hierarchies to unethical behavior at the individual and societal levels of
analysis. However, factors and processes supporting these associations have not been
well understood. In a series of three studies, this dissertation investigates factors and
processes supporting the relationship between the individual and institutional support of
social hierarchies and unethical behavior. The first study presents a conceptual multilevel
process framework grounded in social dominance theory. The framework suggests that
the individual support of social hierarchies (i.e., social dominance orientation) is
associated with unethical behavior directly, supported by restricted perception and
cognition, and mediationally by means of legitimizing rationalizations, ideologies, and
logics. The institutional support of social hierarchies is linked to unethical behavior
directly, since hierarchies sustain the decoupling of processes and fragmentation of
responsibilities, and interactively through person-environment fit processes (e.g.,
socialization). The second study empirically demonstrates that the individual support of
social hierarchies is indirectly related to unethical decision making by means of
legitimizing rationalizations that help reduce accountability, responsibility, and selfsanctions.
However, the positive relationships between the individual support of social
hierarchies, propensity to use legitimizing rationalizations, and unethical decision making
are attenuated among individuals with a greater ability to self-regulate. The third study
presents and empirically investigates a culture-based model of the relationship between the support of social hierarchies and unethical decision making. The results of a crosscultural
study involving participants from Australia and the U.S. reveal that individual
cultural orientations in the form of social beliefs (e.g., social cynicism) are related to the
individual support of social hierarchies and the propensity to use morally disengaging
rationalizations. The individual support of social hierarchies and propensity to use
morally disengaging rationalizations, in turn, link the individual endorsement of social
beliefs to the propensity to make unethical decisions. Societal differences in the support
of social hierarchies only partially influence these relationships.
Habitat‑specific type I polyketide synthases in soils and street sediments
Actinomycetes produce many pharmaceutically useful compounds through type I polyketide biosynthetic pathways. Soil has traditionally been an important source for these actinomycete-derived pharmaceuticals. As the rate of antibiotic discovery has decreased and the incidence of antibiotic resistance has increased, researchers have looked for alternatives to soil for bioprospecting. Street sediment, where actinomycetes make up a larger fraction of the bacterial population than in soil, is one such alternative environment. To determine if these differences in actinomycetal community structure are reflected in type I polyketide synthases (PKSI) distribution, environmental DNA from soils and street sediments was characterized by sequencing amplicons of PKSI-specific PCR primers. Amplicons covered two domains: the last 80 amino acids of the ketosynthase (KS) domain and the first 240 amino acids of the acyltransferase (AT) domain. One hundred and ninety clones from ten contrasting soils from six regions and nine street sediments from six cities were sequenced. Twenty-five clones from two earthworm-affected samples were also sequenced. UniFrac lineage-specific analysis identified two clades that clustered with actinomycetal GenBank matches that were street sediment-specific, one similar to the PKSI segment of the mycobactin siderophore involved in mycobacterial virulence. A clade of soil-specific sequences clustered with GenBank matches from the ambruticin and jerangolid pathways of Sorangium cellulosum. All three of these clades were found in sites >700 km apart. Street sediments are enriched in actinomycetal PKSIs. Non-actinomycetal PKSI pathways may be more chemically diverse than actinomycetal PKSIs. Common soil and street sediment PKIs are globally distributed.
