Into the light : a study of the changing burial customs at Crustumerium in the 7th and 6th centuries BC
The late 7th and 6th century BC in Central Italy have long been regarded as obscure, because only a small number of graves could be ascribed to this period and because these tombs generally contained very few or no grave gifts. However, recent excavations at the burial grounds surrounding the Latial settlement Crustumerium (near Rome) have yielded a fairly large number of tombs dating to this period, shedding new light on this poorly understood period. The study of the Crustumerian funerary archive has revealed a number of remarkable changes in the funerary rituals after the end of the 7th century BC. Apart from a dwindling number of grave gifts granted to deceased individuals, the period witnessed the introduction of more monumental tombs for the deposition of more than one burial. In addition, it seems that people abided less strongly by former strict rules for the treatment of the bodies and the spacing, orientation and closing of the tombs.
Many of the changes in the burial customs seem to be prompted by a shifting locus of investment of the elite; from the sepulchral areas to the now urbanised settlements. The developments can also be viewed as the result of an altered ideological concept of death and afterlife. Overall, the funerary archive of Crustumerium has proven to be of great importance to bring a previously obscure period “into the light”.
A self-willed man, unswayed by criticism. A man with a definite mission. This is the picture painted by the biography of historian Loe de Jong, for which Boudewijn Smits will be awarded a PhD by the University of Groningen on 24 April, to coincide with what would have been De Jong’s one hundredth birthday.
Dr Loe de Jong is mainly known for the thirteen-part series Het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden in de Tweede Wereldoorlog, a 16,800-page tome about the Netherlands in the Second World War, published in 27 volumes. This unparalleled achievement makes him the most illustrious, most productive and highest earning Dutch historian of all times. He was also director of the Netherlands State Institute for War Documentation from 1945 to 1979, and became a Dutch household name thanks to his television series De Bezetting (The Occupation), which was broadcast between 1960 and 1965. Boudewijn Smits has written a thesis based on material from countless archives, correspondence and conversations with his peers, in which he manages to sketch a lively portrait of Loe de Jong the man, organiser, historian and media figure.
Loe de Jong is an icon of Dutch history and historiography. Although a great deal has already been said and written about him, Smits thinks that there is still room for a biography. ‘Nobody has explored the combination of his life and work with such intensity, using so many sources. I was even able to trace a file kept on him by the National Security Office (BVD). De Jong was shadowed from 1948 after being mistakenly suspected of having communist sympathies. I was also given exclusive access to De Jong’s personal archive in the Netherlands State Institute for War Documentation (NIOD), a source that has never been consulted before,’ continues the biographer. ‘It contains unique correspondence with his persecuted Jewish family in the Netherlands.’ Smits spoke to more than a hundred people who had known De Jong and with the journalists who first reported De Jong’s secret investigation into Aantjes. In November 1978, the then-leader of the Christian Democratic Alliance fell from power after De Jong’s revelations about his war years. ‘This was an episode that seriously damaged De Jong’s reputation,’ comments Smits.
‘This biography is largely about how the Dutch people came to terms with the Second World War. De Jong’s authoritative television persona and his set opinions about the occupation brought him huge success in the television documentary series De Bezetting and his life’s work Het Koninkrijk,’ says Smits. ‘His account of oppression and resistance made a deep impression thanks to television, a new medium that was taking Europe by storm in the 1960s.’ But from 1965 on, the series became a thorn in the side of an up-and-coming generation of left-wing journalists. De Jong had reached the limits of what he could achieve in terms of fostering patriotic citizenship over reporting academic insights. ‘However, he still managed to find a way of holding the interest of the general public,’ according to Smits. ‘He enlarged upon the oppression-resistance contrast by adding the overarching theme of collaboration, thereby providing himself with academic justification for what he wrote and expounded in Het Koninkrijk.’
‘Many of De Jong’s peers considered him a ‘scholar-under-restrictions,’ continues Smits, ‘vying for favour from the general public with his moralizing right/wrong opinions, at the expense of objective historiography.’ Smits adds this comment. ‘We must remember that De Jong’s genre of national historiography was characterized by a hard-won sense of democratic public responsibility and righteous patriotism that had been generated during the occupation.’

Social Organization through Self-Organization : model and empirical data of macaques
In primate societies, individuals seem to trade social services: exchange grooming for the receipt of grooming, support in fights, tolerance, food, sex, etc. Further, after fights individuals seem to reconcile, console, or appease former opponents, especially those opponents considered ‘friends’. These behavioral patterns are usually assumed to illustrate the great intelligence of primates, i.e. that individuals are able to keep track of the records of acts given and received, estimate the value of relationships, understand the emotional state of others, etc. However, nowadays it is known that cognitive capacities of primates, especially monkeys, are limited: they lack an understanding of thoughts, beliefs, and desires of others; and are unable to plan for the future, remember past events, or engage in causal or analogical reasoning. So, if complex cognition is unlikely to explain these seemingly intelligent behaviours, then, what is? The goal of this PhD thesis was to search alternative mechanisms that may answer this question. I extended an individual-based model of grouping and aggression with grooming behavior. In the new model, GrooFiWorld, individuals group and, when nearby each other, they fight if they are likely to win; otherwise, they may groom, especially when they are anxious. These simple cognitive rules in combination with the spatial location of individuals in the group were sufficient to generate all commonly described behavioural patterns (e.g. exchange of grooming for support, reconciliation, consolation) of primate societies, especially macaques. Hopefully, these findings will inspire empirical researchers to investigate the mechanisms suggested by the model.
Bacterial infections in burn wounds
Thermal injury destroys the skin, the natural barrier to the external environment. As a result the burned area is prone to infection and colonization of microorganisms. The most common pathogenic colonizing bacteria are Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. S. aureus is both a human commensal bacterium, as it is carried by a significant amount of individuals, and a possible infectious pathogen. Other prevalent bacteria in burn wounds are Acinetobacter baumannii and Klebsiella pneumonia. All these pathogenic species of bacteria can contribute to the inflammatory immune responses induced by thermal injuries. Hyperactivity of human macrophages induces an increased production of cytokines, radical oxygen agents and endotoxins. This leads to a diminished function of the adaptive immune system. Thereby, there is a destruction of cell membranes and denaturation of proteins in endothelial cells. Severe thermal injuries may lead to impaired functioning of the cardiovascular, the excretory, the respiratory and the gastrointestinal system. The most common treatment method used to be treatment with topical antibacterial agents. However, most pathogenic strains have acquired resistance to antibiotics. Several different treatment strategies have been effectively developed. Negative wound pressure therapy has been proved to inhibit bacterial proliferation and to reduce cytokine production. Garlic ointment showed effective inhibition of biofilm formation by all prevalent pathogenic bacterial strains.
Detecting Music in an Everyday, Noisy environment
This paper is written to describe how music can be broken down to features understandable for a computer using Continuity Preserving Signal Processing. The music used in this project was mixed with ambient noise consisting of seventeen everyday scenarios. By analyzing the sound samples and extracting general features that may indicate music it has been made possible to design and implement a detector which can detect music in seventeen everyday scenarios using these features. This paper shows how the features were found, the design process of the detector, its early results and mentions possible improvements.
Hydrolase-catalyzed synthesis of polyamides and polyester amides
Developments in enzymatic polymerization have been ongoing for decades. Various studies on the enzymatic synthesis of polyesters, polycarbonates, polysaccharides, polypeptides, and polyamides have been performed and some of them have been implemented on industrial scale. Lipases are the most used catalyst in the synthesis of polyesters and polyamides. Extensive studies on the kinetics and the mechanism of lipase-catalyzed synthesis of polyesters have been carried out already, but the enzymatic synthesis of polyamides has received less attention. Therefore, the current research aims to address this by focusing more on the enzymatic synthesis of polyamides in order to get a better understanding of its reaction mechanism.
Polyamides are widely used polymers in daily and industrial applications, due to their high mechanical strength and good thermal resistance. Synthesis of most polyamides involves the use of aggressive chemicals and high temperatures. Bio-catalytic approaches might be superior alternative synthesis routes, which can be performed under mild reaction conditions. In this research, the synthesis of aliphatic oligoamides (nylon-4,10, nylon-6,10, and nylon-8,10), aliphatic-aromatic oligoamides, and poly(ε-CL-co-β-lactam) was performed. These reactions were catalyzed by immobilized Fusarium solani pisi cutinase or Candida antarctica lipase B (CAL-B). Immobilized Fusarium solani pisi cutinase was prepared by two different methods: (1) physical adsorption on Lewatit (polymethyl methacrylate) beads and (2) cross-linked enzyme aggregates (CLEA).
