    Designing perceived safety in autonomous vehicles: A data-informed-design approach sizing and shaping the design space

    T heperceived safety of Autonomous Vehicles (AV) is considered a major challenge towards their public acceptance. Here we explore the role of vehicle design in instilling a sense of safety on behalf of prospective passengers. Previous work showed that variations in exterior design affect people’s perceptions although the particular design features driving these shifts in perception were not elaborated on. We aim to identify and validate the relative importance of design features pertaining not just to the vehicle exterior. The work contributes towards the development of a wider Data-Informed-Design (D-I-D) approach to assist designers to make mindful decisions, empower their creativity, and increase design efficiency and effectiveness by sizing or shaping the design space. Based on a series of semi-structured interviews with senior designers, we developed an initial taxonomy of design features. Their relative importance was subsequently validated in a forced-choice experiment in which a panel was asked to judge perceived safety of concept autonomous vehicles including particular design features. Preliminary results indicated that not all features had the intended effect suggestive of a “knowledge gap” on behalf of the designers indicating the potential benefits of a Data-Informed-Design approach

    Open Sky continues Curran’s ongoing research into the impacts of screen-based technologies on embodied experience and modes of attention. This body of work developed from the gallery’s courtyard space which highlights the subtle interactions between the architectural surroundings and the light of the changing seasons. Reflecting on the double meaning in Chinese philosophy of tian (天) as both sky and cosmos, Curran’s works - and the processes involved in their making – invite access to different modes of time and attentiveness to what remains of the everyday beyond the spaces of the screen. They explore slow or vacant time, inner contemplation, and drifting states of consciousness where the sky becomes the physical space of the earth’s atmosphere, subject to changing light conditions and weather patterns, but also a metaphorical space between visible and invisible worlds terrestrial and celestial. In these works colour is an affirmation of presence and the act of noticing. It is spatial, material, rhythmic and spiritual, revealing the artist’s intimate connections to place and her engagement with the more-than-human world found in her everyday encounters with plants, trees, animals, insects and weather. Colour is gathered and patched together in densely stitched layers of painted cloth and dyed fabrics, suggesting the elusiveness of sensory experience and inner moments of illumination. Several works use quilting methods as painted cloths are pieced and stitched together. These paintings maintain their softness, creases, folds, and frayed edges. Bodily connections that extend to the quilt’s traditional use as providers of warmth and protection associated with acts of sleep, rest and dream. These connections hold significance as the quilt’s function may support a utopian intention, one that projects new possibilities for transformation through deep rest and slowing down, one that pushes back against the screen’s subdual of sunlight and its colonisation of the spaces of daydream

    Artists’ books as a qualitative research methodology in multidisciplinary contexts

    This practitioner piece outlines a novel method for practice-based research centred on the production of artists’ books. There is growing evidence for the benefits of artists publishing as an alternative route to disseminating academic research (see Bodman, ‘Towards a community of artists’ books’, 2019; Taylor, ‘The artist’s book as collaborative art practice’, 2017; Vieth, ‘The artist’s book challenges academic convention’, 2006). However, there is only limited research to help understand how the unique qualities of the artist’s book as a medium – and the processes and methods used in its creation – can be positioned to scaffold a process of mediating knowledge and hierarchies of practices. The insights from the study have significant benefits beyond art and design where they can be useful in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) contexts, especially where this involves diverse multidisciplinary groups and specialist/non-specialist participants. The research focused on designing a practice-based method which positions the artist’s book edition as a visual verbatim facsimile. The project’s initiating concept and conceptual anchor centred on the etymology of the prefix ‘re’. As a facsimile, each iterative edition revisits, reuses and reassembles, making visible the traces of individual interpretations and interventions as well as the technologies and materials deployed in the process of collaboration. As shown through the study, the method proposed offers an inclusive collaborative process where progressively more complex relationships are formed and synthesized through subsequent editions.     Emerging trends in realistic robotic simulations: A comprehensive systematic literature review

    Simulation plays a pivotal role in providing safely reproducible scenarios to evaluate the ever-advancing domain of computer science and robotics. It was an essential part of the pandemic when no access to physical spaces was available. The advent of AI-powered platforms in conjunction with enhanced graphics, physics and other sensory engines attracts a new breed of interdisciplinary researchers to enter the robotic field, most notably from computer science, engineering and social sciences. Integration of ROS as a uniform middleware to deploy achieved outcomes in real practice provides an opportunity to move one step closer to the sim-to-real experiences that enables researchers to test ideas beyond the close laboratory spaces. There is a lack of comprehensive evaluation of ROS-enabled simulators, and the integration of advanced AI techniques for realistic scenario replication. This paper addresses this challenge by evaluating ROSenabled simulators in the design and implementation of AI techniques through an in-depth systematic literature review (SLR). This SLR is guided by the research and commercial market demands, employing Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, and Context (PICOC) and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) frameworks with a major focus on Wheeled Mobile Robots (WMRs). We also highlight the increasing importance of game engines like Unity and Unreal in future of robotic simulations, especially under modelling close to real experiences. By comparing simulation platform features and capabilities, this paper offers guidance to developers and researchers, enabling them to select the most suitable platform for their projects efficiently that contradicts the commonly in use “one size fits all” approach. Finally, based on the thorough insights from the review, we identify and suggest some key future research directions in AI-enhanced realistic robotic simulations

    Making with: What I have learnt through making with clay, with people with dementia

    Clay’s inherent material qualities have the potential to facilitate non-verbal communication and storytelling and enable people with dementia to access embodied knowing and memory. This paper reflects on my observations of a clay workshop for people with dementia as part of the ongoing Clay for Dementia programme at the Garden Museum, using embodied cognition theory as a framework to gain insight into what is happening when people with dementia make with clay. While there is a growing body of research into the benefits for people with dementia engaging in arts activities, clay is under researched in relation to cognitive, therapeutic and social benefits for people with dementia, this paper seeks to address this, using the holistic methodology of autoethnography and arts-based research; drawing upon my own embodied knowledge of working with clay. I hope to challenge the perceptions of people with dementia, sharing how I have observed a capacity to develop new skills and work imaginatively

    Architectures of development and US housing aid in Cold War Latin America: Bolivia in the trajectory of inter-American housing operations

    This thesis examines the architectures of development programmes implemented by the ‘first world’ —with the US at the forefront- in Latin America during the Cold War. It explores the transnational trajectories and contact zones that shaped architectural ideas, underscoring the complexities of inter-American engagement. The research shows the impact of housing aid projects on Latin America’s built environment and local institutions, with Bolivia as a central case study. This dissertation is structured into three development periods. The first phase begins with the Point Four programme, announced in 1949 by US President Harry S. Truman, aimed at collaborating with ‘underdeveloped’ regions within an anti-communist. framework. This part examines the ‘aided self-help housing’ strategy as a form of US international technical assistance to encourage development. It traces the progression of a low-cost housing model from early essays in Puerto Rico, spreading across Latin America in the 1950s through US Operations Missions. Chile is examined as a link connecting diverse trajectories. Also, the establishment of the Inter-American Housing Centre (CINVA) in 1951 is highlighted as a significant regional platform for architects to exchange housing ideas within an interdisciplinary environment, fostering South-South collaborations. It concludes by analysing Charles Abrams’ United Nations housing consultancy in Bolivia, which aimed to replace previous local programmes with economic austerity measures and to extend homeownership among the lowest-income people. The second period addresses the 1960s Alliance for Progress, initiated by US President John F. Kennedy after the 1959 Cuban Revolution, to support Latin American development and counter communism. It explores how economic aid funded ‘satellite cities’ and ‘neighbourhood units’, targeting not only low-income populations but also the middle socio-economic strata. Projects financed by the Inter-American Development Bank and the US Agency for International Development illustrate an inter-American trajectory of architectural and urban design ideas, alongside institutional interventions. Additionally, the investments of US companies, such as World Homes, in Latin America are discussed, highlighting the North-South dynamics in their local subsidiaries. Bolivia is presented as a case study to demonstrate a ‘bipolar’ urban growth driven by these international institutions and private firms, contrasting developments in El Alto’s highlands for lower-income residents with those in the La Paz valley for middle-income groups. The final part explores the continuation of US international housing aid during Robert McNamara’s tenure as World Bank President from 1968 to 1981. This third part shows McNamara’s transition from an ‘armed war’ to a ‘war on absolute poverty’, focusing on housing in ‘third world’ cities across Latin America, Africa, and Asia. It explores updated strategies of aided self-help housing through Sites and Services and Slum Upgrading programmes implemented in 35 countries. Through Bolivia, it explores interactions between foreign experts and local architects in project implementation, with case studies in El Alto and La Paz illustrating the translation of ideas into practice. The research draws on institutional, national, and personal archives from the US, Bolivia, Colombia, and Chile, providing qualitative and quantitative data on housing projects. This includes archival records of memoranda, letters, and contracts between foreign institutions and local authorities. These documents are confronted with personal files and recent interviews with architects and officials, offering insights into these housing operations’ reception, contestation, negotiation, and adaptation. This thesis aims to contribute to existing research in architectural history concerning western Cold War urbanisations in the ‘third world.’ It argues that a closer examination of Bolivia’s relationship with the US and international institutions can enhance our understanding of Latin America’s post-war urban landscape. By analysing the impact on architecture and the built environment in Bolivia, this study addresses the crossroads of development and housing, presenting a nuanced perspective that transcends the traditional ‘North-South’ narrative, revealing more complex layers of inter-American engagement
