No full textIn 2008, a human voice is excised digitally from a line traced with boar hair, on a paper covered in lamp black soot. It is now argued to be the earliest human recording of voice, predating Edison’s familiar recording by some 20 years. In this performance, I examine the record, the act of recording, playback, and recollection through a duet with my mother. Together, in conversation and song, we question voice, body, carbon, mark, record and memory with respect to queer life
The street: Disposition and the urban interior
No full textIn all cities, the street is ascribed a formative and integral role in its planning, and it is a key component of its infrastructures. The street is an instrument that can exemplify the health and happiness of any place, and it can be understood as a barometer of urbanized conditions. In its traditional form, the street is usually manifest as an external device, a route lined with buildings or spaces. In their simplest form, streets mobilise and connect places—one to another—through the facilitation of movement between numerous points in the city. In a more complex way, they exemplify the boundaries between private and public, typify conventional as well as aberrant behaviors, and epitomize peripheries, margins, and edges. As a device that plays an integral role in the production of the city, what transformations occur to the street when it is appropriated and adapted through the processes of interiorization? This chapter explores the origins of this urban device, in order to discern its essences: its dispositions. Then, using a series of exemplars, it examines the implications of their transformation into elements of inside space
'Working Spaces' collaborative installation
No full textWorking Spaces is an artist collective and research group exploring Painting’s spatial context. Katrina Blannin and Catherine Ferguson are painters of the flat surface; Moyra Derby, Della Gooden and Jo McGonigal work dimensionally, with Painting in mind. With ‘VERNACULAR’ as the theme for The Colchester Expo at the Minories Gallery we were prompted to consider the vernacular of creative exchange inside a collective. The collective developed an installation which was a mix of ready-made paintings and objects and works made in situ, in response to the space and to each other's work. I exhibited a painting, a photomontage and made a wall drawing. The Expo was an initiative of SLUICE, a non-profit artist and curator-led organisation that has worked exclusively with other non-profit artist and curator-led initiatives since 2011. Sluice strategically adopts structures in order to showcase artist, curator as well as emergent discourses, projects and galleries
Prediction of yarn sales price using data mining techniques – a case of yarn manufacturing industry
Get PDFData-driven knowledge is required for businesses to make better decisions that result in profit maximisation. In this study, it has been attempted to develop a model to predict yarn sales prices against cotton prices and other parameters. For this purpose, four different data mining techniques namely ARIMA (Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average), Multivariate regression, K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) and Neural Networks (NN), were considered. The entire analysis was performed on thirty months of data that was collected from the ERP system of a yarn manufacturing industry. The unique aspect of this study is that before separately deploying data mining techniques, significant parameters that impact yarn sales prices were identified through Adjusted R-squared values. Seasonal and trend patterns were checked on yarn sales data, and seasonal adjustments were obtained through data mining algorithms. The performance of all four models was evaluated using Mean Absolute Error and Root Mean Square Error. The analysis shows that the KNN model, in the stated settings, is the most accurate as evident from MAE and RMSE values of 222.85 and 285.082, respectively. This study’s unique combination of features and machine learning algorithms is envisaged to be valuable for decision-makers in the textile yarn manufacturing industry
The uses of enchantment: Playful design tools that evoke ‘the unsayable’ for teenagers with lived experience of loneliness
Get PDFThis project introduces tools that involve teenagers, with relevant lived experiences, in co-creating a social-purpose advertising campaign as a way of meaningfully engaging young audiences. Many co-creation methods rely on direct, text-based, or individual spoken contribution methods. These disregard young people’s unconscious knowledges and collective ways of knowing. The research was conducted through ethnographic methods alongside semi-structured interviews with the participants of a co-created campaign workshop. The result is a suite of novel playful tools which generate collective insight and creative ideas by engaging teenagers’ collective, embodied and imaginative ways of knowing. The key concept of ‘enchantment’ is used to make sense of the overall process in combination with three key insights, pertaining to saying “the unsayable”, seeing with an expanded perceptive range, and attunement to collective knowledges
Design for shared driverless vehicles of the future
Get PDFOn-demand shared transportation is a major new mobility innovation and potentially the main mode of transport in coming decades. Studies show that driverless vehicles have potential to accelerate uptake of shared vehicles at scale. People perceive sharing positively but do not necessarily translate perception into action, with desire for personal space a major reason for unwillingness to share vehicles. Design research is a powerful tool when creating methods and processes to anticipate future possibilities by visualising detailed features of proposed products. We present a set of design research methods engaging end users in a variety of empathy activities and a design process to translate their needs into visual concepts for future shared driverless vehicles that are attractive and more likely to be adopted

Get PDFThe Responses anthologies are a tool for reflection on curatorial practices as well as the repository for a professionalising writing exercise. Treating the experience of a curatorial project as a “data set”, a form of Collective Qualitative Analysis underpins the development of the texts, which this time focused on the 2023 Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (GIBCA). The visit to the Biennial was followed by a one-day workshop that resulted in the contributors’ first drafts of abstracts, at the start of a four month-long writing process. While based on the rawness of individual experiences, the texts have been fine-tuned through repeated toing and froing between the authors and the editors, where they provided feedback on an abstract, a first draft and a second draft before the final essays were submitted

It connects his innovations to the intellectual concerns of the time including cybernetics and systems thinking, to which Mallen brought his own unique contributions. The chapter prioritises design over other disciplines, reflecting not only the primary job that Mallen was employed to do at the RCA, but also his conviction that design presents special properties as a human – and perhaps machine – activity

Get PDFThe field of Experiential design has gained more relevance as new technological advances change the way we register and document cultural content, audiences are becoming more active in seeking active participation, and cultural organisations are being forced to re-evaluate traditional spaces and approaches to cultural display. As educators working in this field, we are interested in the emergent conceptual spaces created by these advancements and the possible frameworks required to guide our pedagogical thinking. In this paper, we explore how experiential design has the potential to act as a catalyst for exploration and discovery. Through case studies, we explore how alternative ways of inclusivity can be achieved by challenging human-centric perspectives, how experiential dialogues have the potential to blur the lines between performer and audience. Thus, creating dynamic spaces for exchange, exploration, and collaboration; and how cultural associations facilitate ways to become spaces of possibility where transformative experiences can unfold
An exploration of the opportunities and challenges of bringing a 'soft' textile design approach into engagement with practitioners from science and engineering disciplines
Get PDFThis dataset comprises a series of nine semi-structured interviews conducted during an embedded research residency undertaken by the author at Imperial College London (ICL) during 2020. Interviewees are textile designers, scientists and engineers who were involved, in some capacity, in the collaboration between the Royal College of Art Textile Design Department and the ICL as part of the EPSRC funded FAIR-SPACE project. The intention of the interviews was to engage participants from across the broader collaboration to gain further insight into smart textile research domains, which is the focus of the authors PhD research
