    Synergistic Integration of Artificial Intelligence and Gamification in University Finance Trading Simulation Labs

    Background The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and gamification in higher education has shown promise in enhancing engagement and learning outcomes, particularly in fields requiring experiential training like finance. However, university trading labs—critical for bridging financial theory and practice—often struggle to sustain student motivation and translate knowledge into real-world decision-making. Existing research predominantly examines AI or gamification in isolation, leaving a gap in understanding their synergistic potential to address these challenges. Objectives This systematic literature review investigates how the combined use of AI-driven adaptive systems and gamification strategies enhances learning experiences, motivation, and skill acquisition in university finance trading labs. Methods Following the systematic review protocol, 28 peer-reviewed studies were analyzed. Thematic coding and synthesis were employed to evaluate empirical findings, theoretical frameworks, and methodological approaches across AI-driven adaptivity (e.g., machine learning, NLP) and gamification elements (e.g., leaderboards, narrative scenarios). Results and Conclusions The integration of AI and gamification significantly improves engagement, knowledge retention, and decision-making agility in simulated trading environments. AI-driven personalization tailors challenges to individual proficiency, while gamification elements foster motivation and resilience. However, challenges such as algorithmic bias, resource disparities, and ethical concerns require interdisciplinary collaboration for equitable implementation. This review provides actionable insights for designing adaptive, game-informed learning ecosystems that prepare students for real-world financial markets, advocating for balanced innovation in pedagogy, technology, and policy. </jats:sec

    'I have a second heartbeat now': Using poetic inquiry to experience pregnancy as an embodied experiment/adventure

    The tendency in the Western world is to over-medicalise the experience of pregnancy and to treat the experience like one might a temporary illness. The patriarchal systems that envelop the pregnant person are often criticised for the lack of agency they allow participants in their own experiences, as they habitually negate and diminish the capabilities of pregnant people to learn and advocate for themselves. Subscribing to a feminist phenomenological worldview and employing poetic inquiry (that is, poetry as-in-for research) throughout the period of gestation allowed me an experimental and forgiving vehicle for conceiving of my pregnancy as mine and not any institutional system’s. This essay examines pregnancy as an embodied, phenomenological experience, drawing on the work of phenomenological and posthuman scholars, and using pieces of the poetry I wrote during my first pregnancy as evidence. It should be treated as an argument for an embodied understanding of the pregnancy experience,and a plea to treat birthing people as navigators and leaders of their own physical and emotional destinies

    Direct whole-genome sequencing enables strain typing of unculturable Neisseria meningitidis from oropharyngeal carriage specimens

    Oropharyngeal carriage of Neisseria meningitidis (N.m.) is a prerequisite for invasive meningococcal disease. As such, genomic surveillance of disease-causing carriage strains can inform targeted public health responses. However, whole-genome sequencing (WGS) from isolates is often precluded due to the high rates of culture failure for N.m. samples collected in carriage studies. This study outlines an alternative method to sequence N.m. directly from oropharyngeal specimens that enables high-resolution molecular fine typing. We performed direct probe-capture enrichment WGS (dWGS) of N.m. on oropharyngeal specimens from the ‘B part of it’ South Australian and ‘B part of it NT’ Northern Territory meningococcal carriage studies (NCT03089086 and NCT04398849). Sequences were analysed using currently available bioinformatic tools, including the characterization of genogroup, multi-locus sequence typing (MLST), Bexsero Antigen Sequence Typing (BAST), porA and fetA type. Sensitivity of dWGS typing compared to WGS for genogroup, MLST, porA, fetA and BAST schemes was 88.89%, 72.22%, 100%, 94.44% and 88.24%, respectively. Genogroup and porA type were more reliably characterized in unculturable samples compared to the other typing schemes assessed. Factors that influenced accurate fine typing included the amount and proportion of N.m. sequences, and the proportion of other Neisseria species in enriched sequencing libraries. An alternative phylogenetic method (phylotyping) correctly predicted the clonal complex for 93.46% of the samples assessed. These results demonstrate that dWGS enables high-resolution molecular fine typing and can be applied to unculturable samples in N.m. carriage studies.Rosa C.     Effects of prescribed fire on body condition, injury frequency, and recapture of reptiles in Mediterranean-type eucalypt forests

    Data source: supplementary material, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.foreco.2025.122683Changing fire regimes in forests, including increases in prescribed burning, are likely to affect animal health. We studied the effects of prescribed fire on body condition, injury frequency, and recapture frequency of reptiles in native forests of a southern Australian biodiversity hotspot. We conducted 6375 trap days and processed 1750 individuals of eight species. Three species accounted for 96 % of captures, and we found that body condition for Lampropholis guichenoti, the most common species, was lowest immediately after burning and highest in sites exceeding 20 years since fire. Body condition improved after six months and varied across seasons. Frequency of caudal injuries and time since fire were not related, but condition was poorer in injured individuals in two species. Recapture frequency of L. guichenoti was highest in unburnt sites, suggesting higher mortality or emigration in sites burnt within 20 years. Our study demonstrated that body condition and, potentially, site fidelity and survival in this species are poorer immediately after fire. The unchanged condition of two species and the rapid recovery of body condition of L. guichenoti after fire and across seasons may reflect species-specific behaviour, food availability, and/or predator exposure. Future studies should focus on post-fire interactions among survival, movement, and individual health characteristics to evaluate fully the ongoing consequences of fire, particularly for species occupying frequently burnt or threatened ecosystems or those subject to successional change over decadal timescale

    Attracting manufacturing firms to South Australia: The case of Philips in Hendon, 1946–1980

    Abstract Philips Australia established its manufacturing branch in Adelaide in 1946. At its peak, the Hendon plant had 3500 employees and was one of many manufacturers that reshaped the city's north‐western suburbs. Philips was enticed by the offer of relocation subsidies, access to Commonwealth buildings, and State provision of affordable housing. The company's approach to employee welfare included providing staff training and sporting and cultural amenities. The social impact of industrialisation and Philips' presence lasted several decades but faded after the company left in 1980 and immigrant workers aged. It did, however, contribute to permanent social changes in Adelaide's north‐western suburbs.</jats:p

    Translucent MXene oxide-based bilayered nanocoating on woods for integrated active and passive fire safety

    Data source: Supporting information, https://doi.org/10.1002/sstr.202400630Intelligent fire-warning materials and sensors have gained considerable attention due to their excellent passive flame resistance and sensitive active fire-alarm behaviors. However, current nanofiller-based fire-warning composites (e.g., MXene, graphene) still face limitations, including intrinsic dark feature, poor structural reliability, and unstable fire-warning response, hindering their broad use in decorative applications. Herein, a novel MXene derivative-based bilayered composite nanocoating on wooden substrates with translucent features, exceptional flame resistance, and sensitive fire-warning response is reported. MXene oxide porous nanoparticles are synthesized by a facile and simple oxidation of MXene and show unexpected network structure and semitransparent feature. Utilizing double-layer structure and designed cross-linked interface, the final nanocoatings applied onto the wooden substrates display good mechanical property and tunable optical transparency. Further, such double-layer design guarantees excellent fire resistance performance through the formation of a compact C/N/P-dopped TiO2 network during combustion. More interestingly, the resulting composite nanocoatings also display a rapid fire-responsiveness (approximate to 2.9 s), extended alarm duration (>300 s), and high repeated fire-alarm capacity (>30 cycles) even after 1 year outdoors.     Rethinking self, presence, and participation in online teaching and learning during the COVID-19 pandemic

    The shift to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic has been a learning experience for educators. While online learning is not new, the sudden loss of familiar cues has highlighted challenges for learners and teachers. This paper focuses on the significance of language in virtual classrooms in an Australian university in the narrative accounts elicited from five educators. The analysis drew on notions of activity types ( Levinson, 1979 ), the dramaturgic self ( Goffman, 1959 ), and learning as a reciprocal, meaning-making, and interpretive process ( Scarino, 2014 ). The findings demonstrate that the participants responded to the challenges and possibilities they encountered by developing ways of rethinking self, presence, and participation in interaction with learners. We argue that this process involves an intercultural orientation to teaching and learning in online settings that is key to reflective practice, relationships of trust and shared understandings in teaching, learning, and knowing, well beyond the pandemic

    The longitudinal effect of safety climate on safety behaviour: the role of extraversion and conscientiousness as moderators

    Up to 80% of workplace injuries and accidents are attributed to human error. In safety-critical occupations like firefighting, vigilant safety behaviour is essential to prevent avoidable incidents. While safety climate is known to foster safe behaviour, it remains unclear whether individual personality traits weaken this effect. Drawing on the theory of purposeful work behaviour, we explore how extraversion and conscientiousness influence the pathway through which safety climate impacts safety behaviour via safety motivation. We collected three waves of survey data from 322 firefighters across 46 fire stations in Malaysia. Using hierarchical linear modelling (HLM) and the Monte Carlo method, we tested the hypothesised moderation and mediation effects. Results show that safety climate indirectly influenced safety compliance through safety motivation but had no effect on safety participation. No evidence was found to support the moderating role of personality in the safety climate-behaviour relationship. These findings align with the theoretical principle that organisational safety norms play a significant role in shaping safety motivation and behaviour, regardless of individual personality traits. The study underscores the importance of senior management in promoting firefighter safety behaviour, sustaining motivation, and fostering desirable safety outcomes

    Decrease in computational load and increase in accuracy for filtering of random signals

    This paper describes methods for optimal filtering of random signals that involve large matrices. We developed a procedure that allows us to significantly decrease the computational load associated with numerically implementing the associated filter and increase its accuracy. The procedure is based on the reduction of a large covariance matrix to a collection of smaller matrices. This is done in such a way that the filter equation with large matrices is equivalently represented by a set of equations with smaller matrices. The filter we developed is represented by x=∑ᵖ=1pMjyj and minimizes the associated error over all matrices M1,.....,Mp. As a result, the proposed optimal filter has two degrees of freedom that increase its accuracy. They are associated, first, with the optimal determination of matrices M1,....,Mp and second, with an increase in the number p of components in the filter.     Does size matter: how product assortment size is related to brand performance

    This research examines how product assortment size relates to brand penetration, loyalty, and market share, using data from 34 product categories in the UK and US over time. While assortment size has a strong relationship with brand size, net changes in assortment size are weakly associated with concurrent changes in brand penetration and market share. Assortment size changes also have a weak positive effect on changes in brand loyalty. The research emphasises the importance of brand size and category context when making assortment decisions; and provides managers with assortment size benchmarks. As the first large-scale, multi-country, multi-category longitudinal investigation of product assortment size on brand performance, the paper provides a solid foundation of knowledge including key conditions to underpin theory development related to product assortment
