Flow boiling in horizontal flattened tubes: Part I – Two-phase frictional pressure drop results and model
Experiments of diabatic two-phase pressure drops in flow boiling were conducted in four horizontal flattened smooth copper tubes with two different heights of 2 and 3 mm. The equivalent diameters of the flat tubes are 8.6, 7.17. 6.25, and 5.3 mm. The working fluids are R22 and R410A, respectively. The test conditions are: mass velocities from 150 to 500 kg/m(2) s, heat fluxes from 6 to 40 kW/m(2) and saturation temperature of 5 degrees C (reduced pressures p(r) are 0.12 for R22 and 0.19 for R410A). The experimental results of two-phase pressure drops are presented and analyzed. Furthermore, the predicted two-phase frictional pressure drops by the flow pattern based two-phase pressure drop model of Moreno Quiben and Thome [J. Moreno Quiben, J.R. Thome, Flow pattern based two-phase frictional pressure drop model for horizontal tubes, Part I: Diabatic and adiabatic experimental study, Int. J. Heat Fluid Flow 28 (2007) 1049-1059; J. Moreno Quiben, J.R. Thome, Flow pattern based two-phase frictional pressure drop model for horizontal tubes, Part II: New phenomenological model, Int. J. Heat Fluid Flow 28 (2007) 1060-1072] using the equivalent diameters were compared to the experimental data. The model, however, underpredicts the flattened tube two-phase frictional pressure drop data. Therefore, correction to the annular flow friction factor was proposed for the flattened tubes and now the method predicts 83.7% of the flattened tube pressure drop data within +/- 30%. The model is applicable to the flattened tubes in the test condition range in the present study. Extension of the model to other conditions should be verified with experimental data. Efficient processing of XPath queries with structured overlay networks
Non-trivial search predicates beyond mere equality are at the current focus of P2P research. Structured queries, as an important type of non-trivial search, have been studied extensively mainly for unstructured P2P systems so far. As unstructured P2P systems do not use indexing, structured queries are very easy to implement since they can be treated equally to any other type of query. However, this comes at the expense of very high bandwidth consumption and limitations in terms of guarantees and expressiveness that can be provided. Structured P2P systems are an efficient alternative as they typically offer logarithmic search complexity in the number of peers. Though the use of a distributed index (typically a distributed hash table) makes the implementation of structured queries more efficient, it also introduces considerable complexity, and thus only a few approaches exist so far. In this paper we present a first solution for efficiently supporting structured queries, more specifically, XPath queries, in structured P2P systems. For the moment we focus on supporting queries with descendant axes (``//") and wildcards (``*") and do not address joins. The results presented in this paper provide foundational basic functionalities to be used by higher-level query engines for more efficient, complex query support.LSI
Packet Combining in Sensor Networks
This paper presents the Simple Packet Combining (SPaC) error-correction scheme for wireless sensor networks. Nodes buffer corrupt packets, and when two or more corrupt versions of a packet have been received, a packet combining procedure attempts to recover the original packet from the corrupt copies. Packet combining exploits the broadcast medium and spatial diversity of a multi-hop wireless network by using packets overheard at any node, in addition to the next-hop destination of the packet itself. Unlike point-to-point forward error correction (FEC), packet combining therefore helps multi-node interactions such as multi-hop routing or broadcasting as well as to hop-by-hop communication. Also, SPaC does not transmit redundant overhead on good links and does not require costly probes to estimate channel conditions. We have implemented SPaC as a link-layer extension on sensor nodes; it is transparent to upper layer protocols and has low memory and CPU footprints. We evaluate performance through a combination of analysis, trace-driven simulation, indoor and outdoor testbed micro-benchmarks, and deployment on a live network. The results show significant performance gains, even when accounting for the energy cost of CPU processing. We also present detailed bit-level link measurements and the design and evaluation of a new preamble detection scheme motivated by these measurements.LCA
Atmospheric boundary-layer structure observed during a haze event due to forest-fire smoke
During a haze event in Baltimore, U.S.A. from July 6 to 8, 2002, smoke from forest fires in the Québec region (Canada), degraded air quality and impacted upon local climate, decreasing solar radiation and air temperature. The smoke particles in and above the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) served as a tracer and provided a unique opportunity to investigate the ABL structure, especially entrainment. Elastic backscatter lidar measurements taken during the haze event distinctly reveal the downward sweeps (or wisps) of smoke-laden air from the free atmosphere into the ABL. Visualisations of mechanisms such as dry convection, the entrainment process, detrainment, coherent entrainment structures, and mixing inside the ABL, are presented. Thermals overshooting at the ABL top are shown to create disturbances in the form of gravity waves in the free atmosphere aloft, as evidenced by a corresponding ripple structure at the bottom of the smoke layer. Lidar data, aerosol groundbased measurements and supporting meteorological data are used to link free atmosphere, mixed-layer and ground-level aerosols. During the peak period of the haze event (July 7, 2002), the correlation between time series of elastic backscatter lidar data within the mixed layer and the scattering coefficient from a nephelometer at ground level was found to be high (R ¼ 0.96 for z ¼ 324 m, and R ¼ 0.89 for z ¼ 504 m). Ground-level aerosol concentration was at a maximum about 2 h after the smoke layer intersected with the growing ABL, confirming that the wisps do not initially reach the ground.EFLUM114: 53-7
A Decentralized Architecture for Adaptive Media Dissemination
P2P content distribution networks have become extremely popular on the Internet. Due to their self-organization properties, they suffer from the lack of control to balance the load among peers for contents of different popularity. In this paper, we define and analyze a fully decentralized architecture to support replication of popular media content in a peer-to-peer network. We show that by exploiting local knowledge only, this method achieves a nearoptimal behavior with respect to response time in a scenario with limited storage capabilities at peers. Full documentLSI
