Contest design with a finite type-space: A unifying approach
We study the classical contest design problem of allocating a budget across prizes to maximize effort. While the previous literature has predominantly focused on continuum type-space or complete information domains, we analyse the finite type-space domain, thus providing a unifying approach that sheds light on the contrasting structure of optimal contests in these extreme environments. Our results include a characterization of the equilibrium, which involves agents mixing over contiguous intervals and converges to the appropriate continuum type-space equilibrium, and an investigation of how increasing competition influences effort, leading to optimality of winner-takes-all contest under linear and concave costs
Multimodal Machine Learning for Stroke Prognosis and Diagnosis: A Systematic Review
Stroke is a life-threatening medical condition that could lead to mortality or significant sensorimotor deficits. Various machine learning techniques have been successfully used to detect and predict stroke-related outcomes. Considering the diversity in the type of clinical modalities involved during management of patients with stroke, such as medical images, bio-signals, and clinical data, multimodal machine learning has become increasingly popular. Thus, we conducted a systematic literature review to understand the current status of state-of-the-art multimodal machine learning methods for stroke prognosis and diagnosis. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines during literature search and selection, our results show that the most dominant techniques are related to the fusion paradigm, specifically early, joint and late fusion. We discuss opportunities to leverage other multimodal learning paradigms, such as multimodal translation and alignment, which are generally less explored. We also discuss the scale of datasets and types of modalities used to develop existing models, highlighting opportunities for the creation of more diverse multimodal datasets. Finally, we present ongoing challenges and provide a set of recommendations to drive the next generation of multimodal learning methods for improved prognosis and diagnosis of patients with stroke
The recency bias in the attribution of credit and blame for joint work outcomes
In production processes within modern firms and organizations, it is often the case that individuals contribute sequentially to achieve a common goal. Does the order of contributions affect attribution of credit or blame for the outcome of a joint production process? We design an experiment in which teams of three subjects collaborate sequentially on a building task that must be completed within a given time limit. Uninvolved reviewers evaluate the builders’ performance after watching a video of the task, and decide which builder to hire. We find robust evidence of a recency bias for blame attribution: The hiring rates of the final builders are substantially lower when the team fails. However, there is no difference in hiring rates between first and last builders for successful teams. We control for perceived task difficulty, objective and subjective individual contribution perceptions, attention, and recall, none of which explain or dampen the order effect. Our findings have implications for teamwork, organizational design, and management practices of team performance evaluation

In this editorial, the editor reflects on the current political climate in the US and its impact on theatre education. The editor then introduces this issue, in which our contributors document and reflect on innovative educational theatre practices for youth theatre and theatre for young audiences, in higher education, and research methodologies. Sharon Counts advocates for civic and community engagement programs as one prominent and effective method to foster synergy between communities and arts organizations. Maddie N. Zdeblick and Noëlle GM Gibbs investigate their dynamic use of creative drama to explore social justice in youth theatre. James Woodhams analyzes Back Alley Puppetry Parade performances during the COVID-19 pandemic to document pivot-spaces and kinesthetic spectatorship. David Overton shares a heuristic and phenomenological self-study about the Long Island Classics Stage Company. On the higher education front, Ellen Redling proposes methods for enhancing critical thinking skills and ethical responsibility as revealed through two case studies. Dermot Daly uses a similar methodical approach, examining social justice and fringe theatre in higher education. Finally, Nicholas Waxman deconstructs the rise of theatrical inquiry as a research methodology in arts education, and Brenda Burton presents a literature review on the application of teaching and deep learning strategies for the drama-based instruction (DBI) practitioner and researcher
Reimagining Learning Spaces: The Rise of Theatrical Inquiry in Arts Education
This paper explores the evolving concept of theatrical inquiry, tracing its origins, early applications, and its notable resurgence in recent years as a dynamic methodology for probing into learning spaces. Amidst the evolving landscape of arts education, theatrical inquiry endures as a lens through which the contemporary role of drama and theatre can be re-evaluated and redefined. This exploration is set against the backdrop of an ongoing debate: the demarcation between theatre-making and drama as pedagogical tools. By scrutinising the utility of theatrical inquiry in fostering aesthetic understanding and awareness amongst students, this study positions itself at the intersection of Drama in Education and Applied Theatre. It seeks to unravel the complexities of using drama and theatre not just as mediums of artistic expression but as critical instruments that can enhance cognitive, emotional, social, and creative reflection. Through a comprehensive review of literature, this paper aims to shed light on the varied ways in which theatrical inquiry can enrich arts education. It contributes to the academic discourse by providing a timeline of the evolution of the term theatrical inquiry and offers practical insights for educators looking to incorporate these approaches into their teaching practices in the arts
Getting into Good Trouble: A case study on getting started in organized physician advocacy
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed a lot for many people, including medical professionals. For some, the politicization of vaccines and COVID therapies simply highlighted the role of
politics and health policy on health outcomes and patient care. For others, this politicalization was a source of anger and frustration. The Good Trouble Coalition (GTC) was formed by a group of healthcare and public health practitioners in 2022 out of this frustration and a desire to turn anger into action. GTC is “a coalition of Hoosier healthcare and public health stakeholders working to improve life in Indiana through statehouse-level advocacy around issues of public health, patient-centered care, and health equity”. GTC was born in 2022 in response to legislative attacks on public health and the patient-doctor relationship and has grown into a nonprofit advocacy group that focuses on statehouse health
policy in Indiana. Here we share who we are, what we have done, and how we have done it in hopes of providing
a roadmap for physicians and other health care professionals who are interested in organizing
for political advocacy
