    The Excel files in this dataset contain the raw data (as measured) for the results/graphs presented in the manuscript "The ABC model of recombination reinterpreted: impact on understanding carrier transport and efficiency droop in InGaN/GaN light emitting diodes". These measurements are of the optical power emitted from the light emitting diodes (LEDs) described in the manuscript for a range of applied forward bias currents at room temperature.As specifed under sub-heading "EXPERIMENTAL METHODS" of the associated paper. The data were obtained from measurements over a user-defined range of current of the light output power obtained using an integrating sphere (Newport) placed circa 5mm above to enable the LEDs (probed on-wafer) using low-profile probes to connect devices to a pulsed current source (Keithley 2600B). The measurement system was computer controlled via LabView. Full details of the InGaN/GaN sample structures, their growth by MOVPE and subsequent fabrication into working LEDs and the methods used in their characterisation are described on the second page of the article. Further information, if needed, can be obtained from the corresponding author. The data presented in figures 2, 3 and 4 of the paper are direct measurements of the light output power for different pulsed forward bias currents, these graphs being widely known as L-I curves, with the plotted data having been selected as "typical" from the 3 Excel files in this dataset. The data presented in figures 5(a), 5(b) and 5(c) was obtained via a standard, commercially available 3rd order curve fitting procedure from these typical L-I curves. Excel file "6.2 C6010 to 20 before Ni long matched to short pulse abc analysis data blue shift corrected6_v2.xlsx" contains a comprehensive archive of all results obtained by this curve fitting process for all the devices studied in carrying out this work.As specifed under sub-headings "EXPERIMENTAL METHODS" and "REVISED ABC MODEL" of the associated paper.The equipment used and the methods of its use is fully described under sub-heading "EXPERIMENTAL METHODS" of the associated paper

    This dataset contains all data and program code underlying the results presented in the paper of 'Mid-infrared 1 Watt continuous wave hollow-core fiber gas laser source'. In the paper, we report the characteristics of a 1 Watt hollow-core fiber gas laser, emitting continuous-wave in the mid-infrared. Our system is based on an acetylene-filled hollow-core optical fiber, guiding with low losses at both the pump and laser wavelengths and operating in the single-pass ASE regime. By systematic characterization of the pump absorption and output power dependence on gas pressure, fiber length and pump intensity, we determine that the reduction of pump absorption at high pump flux and the degradation of gain performance at high gas pressure necessitate the use of increased gain fiber length for efficient lasing at higher powers. Low fiber attenuation is therefore key to efficient high-power laser operation. We demonstrate 1.1 Watt output power at 3.1 µm wavelength by using a high-power EDFA pump in a single-pass configuration, approximately 400 times higher CW output power than in the ring cavity previously reported. In the dataset, 1. Figure_1_original_absorption_intensity_strength_from_HITRAN.csv contains the orignal downloaded data from HITRAN database. MATLAB code is to convert the absorption intensity to the spectral transmittance per meter in fig.1. 2. Figure_2_b_EDFA_spectrum.csv contains the measured EDFA output spectrum at maximum amplification to generate fig.2 (b). 3. Figure_2_c_fiber_attenuation.csv contains the attenuations of fiber used in this paper, to generate fig.2 (c). 4. Figure_3_b_on_off_resonance_absorption_spectra.csv contains the transmission spectra across the whole pump spectrum, when on and off resonance measured by OSA at the end of fiber. The incident power is 40 dBm for both conditions. 5. Figure_3_c_side_scattering_slopes.csv contains the measure on and off absorption spectra, in unit of dB at various fiber length positions. 6. Figure_4_a_incident_power_laser_output.csv contains measured incident powers and output powers for various pressure in 15 m fiber length. 7. Figure_4_b_absorbed_power_laser_output.csv contains measured absorbed powers and output powers for various pressure in 15 m fiber length. 8. Figure_5_slope_efficiency_and_threshold.csv contains all data to generate fig.5 (a) and (b), including measured slope efficiencies, corresponding maximum absorbed pump power and absorbed pump threshold power for 15m and 6 m fiber lengths and various pressures. 9. The program to simulate the 1 meter transmission in acetylene gas of 1 mbar is included in the MATLAB script file theoretic_absorption.m

    Dataset for "Displacement Talbot Lithography: an alternative technique to fabricate nanostructured metamaterials"

    This dataset contains scanning electron microscopy (SEM) secondary electron (SE) images of linear gratings resist, dashes and holes in resist that were obtained using Displacement Talbot lithography. These techniques were used to assess the dimensions of the resist features that were obtained with linear grating mask, using single or double exposure steps. SE images also shows the lift-off profile used in order to obtain metamaterial 'fishnet' like metallic structures. The dimensions of the measured linear gratings, dashes and holes are written in text files.Displacement Talbot Lithography (Phable), commercialized by Eulitha, was used to fabricate linear gratings, dashes and holes in resist. Phase mask of 800 nm period and 1.2 micron period, with a filling factor of 62%, were used for this study. Secondary electron images were captured using a Hitachi S-4300 scanning electron microscope (SEM). An accelerating voltage of 5 kV was used to collect the images.     Dataset for "Teaching genetics prior to teaching evolution improves evolution understanding but not acceptance"

    What is the best way to teach evolution? We hypothesised that if students know the fundamental concepts of genetics, then this might help them understand evolution better. To evaluate this, we performed a large trial in which pupils in United Kingdom secondary schools were either taught genetics and then evolution or evolution and then genetics. We found that the students being taught genetics first had a 5%–10% improvement in their understanding of evolution, above that shown in the group taught evolution first. The change was seen in both higher- and foundation-ability classes. Indeed, in the foundation classes the genetics-first approach was the only approach that enabled an increase in evolution understanding. Teaching genetics first comes at no cost to genetics understanding (and may even improve it). However, the genetics-first approach was no different from the evolution-first approach in helping the acceptance of evolution. Qualitative follow-up studies indicated a major role for authority figures in determining acceptance, potentially explaining the weak correlation between understanding and acceptance. These results suggest a simple, minimally disruptive, zero-cost intervention to improve evolution understanding: teach genetics first.Methods and documentation can be found in the associated article

    Arched and flat model sea stars were used in a recirculating flow hydraulics flume to assess flow velocities. Methods employed were: using a fluorometer to detect injected rhodamine dye, acoustic Doppler velocimeter to detect mean and shear velocities to a depth of 35mm above the substrate, DPIV using glass microspheres to detect velocities closer to the substrate.The experimental work was undertaken in a unidirectional flow channel measuring 7.50 m long and 0.30 m wide. Flow rate was controlled using a pump and two depth-averaged flow velocities (flow velocity averaged over the entire depth of the water column) were investigated. These were 0.10 ms-1 and 0.25 ms-1 and corresponded to relatively “low” and "high” turbulence cases. A sluice gate located downstream of the experimental section was used to control the water depth, which was set at 0.15 m or 0.30 m during the experiment. Dye concentration was measured at four positions downstream of the model along the flume centreline using a Turner Designs C3 Submersible Fluorometer sampled at 1 Hz. A Nortek Vector Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV) was used to obtain direct point measurements of flow velocity through the flume cross-section, a distance 80 mm downstream of the model centre (Fig. 2). Measurements of all three velocity components (x – along-flume, y – cross-flume, z - vertical) were obtained for both depth-averaged flow velocities at 35 mm vertical intervals at three cross-flume measurement locations. Velocity data was recorded for a 15 second period at each instrument location
