ESG Integration and Technical Efficiency:A Comparative Frontier Analysis in Kuwait Financial Sector
Sustainability initiatives have gained significant attention; however, limited research has examined whether ESG factors facilitate or hinder financial sector efficiency. This research investigates the differences between the traditional stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) and the ESG-integrated SFA model in explaining inefficiency. In addition, it examines how ESG factors influence inefficiencies in a truncated regression. The sample includes 9 banks (4 Islamic and 5 commercial) and 11 financial firms—all the ESG adopters in Kuwait financial sector. Quarterly data were employed from 2018 to 2023. The findings revealed that the ESG-integrated model improves the explanatory power of the cost function, partially reducing stochastic noise in financial operations. Moreover, ESG facilitates lending consistently and reduces the marginal cost of non-interest activities. Nonetheless, capital reliance in both models is associated with higher inefficiencies. Additionally, we found that financial institutions on average operate at 33% below the best-practice technology frontier, indicating moderate gaps across the sector. Overall, strong ESG alignment is associated with improved cost-efficiency when supported by strong institutional quality.</p

McFarlane discussed his theoretical and methodological approach to urban geography, considering fragmentation, inequality, social justice, and assemblage theory, whilst drawing on his fieldwork experiences. The conversation touched on the unequal power relations in these encounters and considered the potential of assemblage theory for understanding rural spaces and rural-urban interconnectedness. Uterine inflammation and lessons from large animal models of endometritis
Uterine inflammation encompasses several conditions, including endometritis, which is a local innate immune response, usually to bacteria. Endometritis is an important veterinary and medical problem that can result in infertility and/or recurrent pregnancy loss. This Review aims to summarize animal models that can be used to uncover the immune pathways responsible for uterine inflammation and their value for screening novel, putative therapies. We discuss large animal models of endometritis, particularly the well-used bovine system and the value that may be added by further developing porcine systems. Animal cells and tissue explants can be ethically sourced, and these models can replace or reduce the need for live animal studies and overcome the practical issues of harvesting endometrial material from women. We explain how these models of endometritis show great potential for advancing our understanding of the immune dysfunction underlying susceptibility to the condition, and for early-stage drug discovery.</p
Navigating diverse human–nature worldviews for more inclusive conservation
Different worldviews shape how humans perceive, understand, inhabit, and value the world. Major efforts to achieve more inclusive conservation, such as the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, seek to more fully reflect diverse worldviews in science, policy, and practice. Building on the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Values Assessment’s comprehensive review of academic publications, Indigenous and local knowledge sources, and policy documents, we characterize 4 human–nature worldviews: anthropocentrism, biocentrism, ecocentrism, and pluricentrism. This heuristic typology can help conservation scholars and practitioners navigate participatory decision-making by providing conceptual clarity to distinguish particular worldviews and the fuzzy boundaries between them, and by addressing practical issues, particularly discursive and structural power dynamics, that affect worldview expression. Two case studies, protected area prioritization in India and payments for ecosystem services in Colombia, show that inclusive conservation depends on strategies and abilities to recognize and understand diverse worldviews and to articulate them in institutions. These examples highlight that engaging diverse human–nature worldviews applies not only to developing new policies but also to adapting mainstream instruments.</p
