Corrosion Stability and Biological Activity of Anodized cpTi for Dental Application
The anodic oxidation of titanium implants is a practical, cost-effective method to enhance implant success, especially due to rising hypersensitivity concerns. This study investigated the electrochemical behavior, surface characteristics, and biocompatibility of anodized commercially pure titanium (cpTi, grade IV). Anodization is performed on polished, cleaned cpTi sheet samples in 1 M H2SO4 using a constant voltage of 15 V for 15 and 45 min. The color of the oxide layer is evaluated using the CIELab color space, while composition is analyzed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). Additionally, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) are performed to identify and monitor the phase transformations of the formed titanium oxides. Corrosion measurements are performed in 9 g L−1 NaCl, pH = 7.4, and show the excellent corrosion stability of the anodized samples in comparison with pure titanium. The biological response is assessed by determining mitochondrial activity and gene expression in human fibroblasts. Anodized surfaces, particularly Ti-45, promote higher mitochondrial activity and the upregulation of adhesion-related genes (N-cadherin and Vimentin) in human gingival fibroblasts, indicating improved biocompatibility and the potential for enhanced early soft tissue integration.Preprint: [https://www.preprints.org/manuscript/202506.2028
The Sacral Topography of the Archbishopric of Ohrid: Architecture, Art, Patronage, and the Cult of Saints in the 11th–13th Century
Medieval Sacral Topography elucidates the spatial arrangement and positioning of sacred sites, churches, monasteries, shrines, and other religious buildings within medieval cities, towns, and landscapes. This concept is important because the location and architectural organization of religious structures often reflect not only re ligious beliefs and practices but also political, social, and cultural dynamics. The study of sacral topography involves both archaeological and historical approaches, revealing how the physical layout of sacred spaces was influenced by theological ideas, political power, and local traditions. T his chapter examines the sacral topography of monuments within the Archbish opric of Ohrid, spanning the period from its Byzantine restoration following the fall of the First Bulgarian Empire in 1018 to the pivotal event of Constantinople’s fall in 1204, the two turning points in the political and artistic landscapes of the region. The artistic processes in this region under the Frist Bulgarian Empire (864–971) and especially under rulership of Samuel and his successors (976–1018) were marked by large-scale and distinctive characteristics. While the main centers of artistic development were in the eastern parts of the Bulgarian Empire, particularly in the capitals of Pliska and Preslav, and later in Ohrid from the 9th century, the last quarter of the 10th century witnessed a significant socio-political and cultural shift. With the Byzantine onslaught and the relocation of the Preslav capital, the focus of building construction moved to Ohrid, Kastoria and the shores of the nearby Lake Prespa. During this period, several notable ecclesiastical buildings were constructed, including the cathedral church of St. Achilleos in Little Prespa, the smaller Church of St. Germanos in the eponymous village in Prespa, the Church of St. Leontios in Vodoča, near Strumica and several churches in Kastoria. These structures likely played a significant role in shaping archi tectural developments in the 11th century. We dedicate this book to our esteemed professor Ljubomir Maksimović with heartfelt thanks for his unwavering support to successive generations of researchers at the Institute for Byzantine Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts
Indirect Byzantinization: Bulgaria as a Case Study
With the conquest and integration of new territories into the Byzantine Empire, the peoples that inhabited them became exposed to so-called direct Byzantinization. This process involved introducing the Byzantine military, fiscal, and judicial systems in newly integrated regions, accompanied by changes to the ecclesiastical organization, processes that can be traced in the aftermaths of the two reoccupations of the Balkans–the short-lived reconquest of John I Tzimiskes (969–976) and the more lasting reoccupation of Basil II (976–1025). In these cases, the Empire would integrate the territory of another state, its ruler, and its subjects into its sphere of influence. Unlike its direct counterpart, indirect Byzantinization involved the dissemination of the Byzantine cultural model in the territory of an independent political entity. Indirect Byzantinization encompassed two parallel processes: accepting various Byzantine influences on the social, cultural, religious, and ideological landscape of Slavic states and the local population’s response to this process, as the Byzantine model was not blindly replicated but modified to reflect local circumstances. In other words, accepting Byzantine influence in almost all spheres of life unfolded in parallel with adapting the offered–and often imposed–models to the given situation and a community’s political needs. Of course, Byzantine influences encountered resistance, as the locals sought to remain as independent from the Empire as possible. Indicators of indirect Byzantinization are traceable in all Slavic states, appearing in the same or very similar iterations. This chapter focuses on Bulgaria, the first South Slavic political entity to emerge as a rival to Byzantium’s domination in the Balkan Peninsula but nevertheless constantly exposed to various influences from the Empire. In addition, the Byzantine advance into the interior of the Balkans was interpreted through the lens of Bulgaria’s conquest. We dedicate this book to our esteemed professor Ljubomir Maksimović with heartfelt thanks for his unwavering support to successive generations of researchers at the Institute for Byzantine Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts
Conversations on Sin in the Slavic Language
At some point during the day, in between the services of the Daily Cycle, two men in conversation separated themselves from the other parishioners in front of the parish church. One was a priest, the other a layman. The priest had a book with him from which he occasionally read out aloud to the other person who listened to him carefully, sometimes speaking as well. The conversation over a book might appear to be some sort of personal sermon, or private interrogation. It was, in fact, the Rite of the Sacrament of Confession. After some time, both of them entered the church. The penitent fell to the ground, face down, and remained there, while the priest read out prayers and selected psalms over him. The priest would then raise the believer to his feet and determine an epitimy for him, after which the final prayers of the rite were read out.We dedicate this book to our esteemed professor Ljubomir Maksimović with heartfelt thanks for his unwavering support to successive generations of researchers at the Institute for Byzantine Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts
Serbian dialects in the digital age: present and future practices
The paper presents our approach to the retro-digitization of various dialectal sources: handwritten
material (paper slips and questionnaires) and printed editions (dictionaries, monographs, articles, dialectal texts). Different types of dialectal material require individual approaches to retro digitization, carefully adjusted to cater to the needs of each specific material. The paper will describe steps taken in the process of retro digitization, as well as the challenges we have faced and solutions we have come up with
