Christian Orthodoxy in Serbia Today. Church Goers vs Christian Orthodox Culture

    No full text
Text is divided in two parts. First represents introductory to thematic volume of Bulletin of Institute of Ethnography. In it, author attempts to summarize theoretical concepts and scopes of previous researches of process of reactualization of social, cultural and spiritual role of Christian Orthodoxy in Serbia during last forty years. She first returns to notions of secularization and de-secularization calling for their critical reading and after this reconsiders paradigm of religious revival in Serbian society at the end of second and f irst decades of third millennium. Religious renewal which took part in SOC during this period remained quite imperceptible for researchers focused on interpretation of religion through prism of re-traditionalization, ethnic identity and nationalistic sentiments during 90ties of 20th century. Parallel with developing new public and political role, SOC was directed towards liturgical renewal and other phenomenon related with this mission: publishing, education, church arts. That is why second part of the paper focuses on ethnography which is suggested to be the most direct method for understanding and interpreting Christian Orthodoxy and culture today. Paper also brings rich ethnographic material collected among church goers in SOC as well as sketch of relation between this segment of Orthodoxy versus general Orthodox Culture in Serbian Society.

    No full text
Cilj rada predstavlja ukazivanje na značaj uloge kulturno-specifičnog znanja o psihoaktivnim supstancama i fenomenu zavisnosti u procesu razvoja, prepoznavanja i lečenja bolesti zavisnosti

The Vulnerability of Banat Bulgarian in Serbia. An Overview

    No full text
This chapter investigates the vulnerability of Banat Bulgarian in Serbia through a questionnaire completed by members of the Banat Bulgarian community in the villages of Ivanovo, Skorenovac, Belo Blato and Konak. The results indicate that 43.4% of the participants’ children speak Banat Bulgarian fluently, a significant decline from the percentage of the respondents’ parents, who used the variety exclusively or mostly, and the respondents who use Banat Bulgarian along with Serbian and another language. Banat Bulgarian is mainly used within the family and less frequently with friends, almost never with neighbours, colleagues, clergy, and officials. Serbian dominates in private and social discussions. The dominance of Serbian is also reflected in the respondents’ self assessment of their language skills: Serbian received ratings of good, very good, and excellent, whereas Banat Bulgarian was often rated as poor or non-existent. Despite this, the majority of respondents considered Banat Bulgarian important and said it symbolises their community and culture. Banat Bulgarian is absent from the school system and official institutions in Serbia; it is only present in the linguistic landscape of the village of Ivanovo on official signs and minimally represented in cultural life, radio and TV broadcasts, websites, and social media. Nevertheless, only a few respondents consume such content in their language. Research shows that Banat Bulgarian is endangered in all examined domains. The dominance of Serbian, particularly apparent in language proficiency assessment and poor transmission of Banat Bulgarian to younger generations, and the almost complete absence of Banat Bulgarian in institutional and cultural fields suggest that the latter is a language used exclusively at home

Names for burial places among Slavic peoples

    No full text
The analyzed Slavic names for the object in which the deceased is buried mostly contain the idea of preserving, hiding, and moving the deceased and are related to burial as the dominant form of burial. It is likely that the similarity in appearance and function (closing, storing) of the coffin and the „raka“ (burial pit) influenced the original meaning of the lexeme „raka“ to be transferred from a designation for an object to the meaning „burial pit“. The significance of moving mortal remains from one space (the space of the living) to another is reflected both in the verbs used to denote burial and in the names of cemeteries, with some of these names also referring to the manner in which the deceased was moved to their place of eternal rest – by dragging (on a sled). The names for the grave and cemetery, which are related to the place being on an elevation, can be linked, on the one hand, to the ancient practice of building burial mounds (kurgans), but also to folk ideas about the afterlife in the heavens. Dialectal names further illuminate folk ideas about that world as a place of peace, tranquility, and silence.

Evaluation of biological properties of dental composite materials after aging

    No full text
Additive manufacturing (3D printing), and subtractive manufacturing (milling), are two primary processes used today in dental restorations, where 3D printing emerged as a most advanced one. Recent in vivo studies have shown good mechanical and physical properties of 3D printed dental materials, but their biological properties, as well as their compatibility with the oral environment, remain incomplete. This type of material contains a higher amount of resin matrix and a lower filler content, comparing to traditionally used light-cured resin. This increases the risk of monomer release and may provoke a pulp inflammation. The release of monomers mainly depends on the composition of the material. The current work presents results of biocompatibility testing for three commercially available dental composite materials: breCAM HIPC (for milling), CROWNTEC (for 3D printing) and GC G- -curing). Their cytotoxicity was evaluated before and after artificial aging through testing on human gingival fibroblast cells. The results obtained were corelated to the surface chemistry of the resins and the degree of monomer conversion, which was determined by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)

    No full text

The Balkans between Byzantium and Bulgaria

    No full text
Any discussion of the place of the Balkan Peninsula in the political and cultural traditions of the Byzantine Empire must begin by revisiting the terms that denoted this space in Byzantine sources. Byzantine authors did not use the term “Balkans,” which did not emerge until the 16th century. Instead, they called the Balkans by many other names that reflected Constantinople’s ideological view of this territory. Byzantine authors saw the Balkans as part of the Byzantine Empire. Invasions of different “barbarian tribes,” such as the Huns, Gepids, Slavs, and Avars, the permanent settlements of the Slavs and Bulgars in the 6th and 7th centuries, and the formation of the first South Slavic states in this region did little to change the view that the Balkans belonged to the Empire’s territory regardless of whether they happened to be within Byzantium’s borders or beyond its political or military control. The Fourth Crusade and the Latin conquest of Constantinople in 1204, when Nicaea temporarily replaced Constantinople as the capital city, led to a shift in the perception of the Balkans, reframing them as a territory inhabited by powerful political actors and rivals of the Empire of Nicaea in the race for restoring Byzantium and reclaiming the Queen of Cities from the Latin Empire. We dedicate this book to our esteemed professor Ljubomir Maksimović with heartfelt thanks for his unwavering support to successive generations of researchers at the Institute for Byzantine Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts

Wedding as a Mirror of Social Change: Continuity and Transformation in the Wedding Customs of the Bosniaks in Novi Pazar

    No full text
This paper presents the results of ethnographic research on weddings and wedding customs among the Bosniaks in Novi Pazar, conducted during 2023 and 2024. The study focuses on the period spanning over the late 20th century and early 21st century, with particular attention to the practices in urban settings. Given the significant social and political transformations that occurred during this timeframe, a central aim of the research was to explore the impact of these changes on the Bosniak wedding tradition. The paper further examines how members of different generations interpret individual customs, which elements they have preserved from traditional weddings and why, and the criteria by which they select specific customs to incorporate into contemporary wedding practices.
