Folklore Strategies of Facing Distorted Normality in Precarious Times: A Case Study of Folklore in Belgrade During the Yugoslav Wars 1991–1999

    No full text
The last decade of the 20th century was marked by a political crisis that led to the dissolution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in a series of armed conflicts and interrelated wars. In Serbia and Montenegro – parts of the same state until 2006 – this period of recent history was additionally marked by economic and cultural sanctions imposed by the international community. The sanctions caused hyperinflation, economic dysfunction and adoption of a wartime embargo economy and culture, in which various forms of folklore responses to the external events and phenomena appeared. They had different communication functions: informative, expressing emotions, psychological tensions, or political and social critique, giving comments on the surrounding reality or transmitting knowledge. In some cases, this folklore had an important role in shaping survival strategies. The paper addresses the interrelation between the macro and micro social environment and the use of specific folklore forms which were dominant in that period of time in Belgrade, as well as the importance of both social and cultural capital for the creation, transmission and pragmatic dimension of this kind of folklore. It focuses on those forms which turned out to be important elements of the survival strategies developed during the ’90s

The aim of this paper is to present how the Yugoslav folk music discography, which was primarily systematized according to the ethnicity and regionality of the music and performers, represented Roma music. “Gypsy songs” and “Gypsy orchestras” had a significant place on the Serbian and Yugoslav folk music market since the beginning of Yugoslav discography, i.e. from the beginning of the 20th century, which continued throughout the century both in radio and television programming. In this paper, I consider how this minority music was represented, especially bearing in mind that music making was stereotypically considered one of the typical Romani professions. Were Romani recordings present in Yugoslav market to the extent as it was the case with Romani live performances, and what were the strategies, but also the goals of presenting “Gypsiness” in Yugoslav discography?Romani and Sinti Musicians between the State, Market, and Society : International Symposium : Ljubljana, Slovenia, 21-23 August 2025

The post-socialist transition in Serbia was characterised by extensive liberalisation of urban planning, coupled with a lack of coherent policy to safeguard the public interest in urban development. This transformation followed the mass privatisation of the housing stock, which shifted housing from a public concern to personal responsibility and initiative. As a result, this process led to significant housing demand and pronounced housing needs. The emergence of affordable housing as a prominent urban phenomenon has become one of the key issues faced by many cities in Serbia. In the early years of liberalisation, there were attempts to incorporate social housing into urban planning as a distinct category within the broader housing objectives, but this trend proved short-lived. Recently, several cities have developed and adopted local territorial strategies that prioritise alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly the objective of fostering sustainable cities and communities, which includes ensuring access to adequate, safe, and affordable housing as well as basic services. This paper will analyse the extent to which new generations of urban plans and local urban development strategies provide a strategic and planning foundation for the provision of social housing in Serbia

The subject of our study is the integration of the lexeme selfie into the Serbian language, with a focus on the word-formation patterns and neological tendencies it has initiated. Special attention is given to the semantic and morphological analysis of newly derived words in Serbian based on this core lexeme, such as selfijaš, selfista, selfijarka, selfizam, etc., along with considerations of their cultural and social implications. The study relies on lexicographic sources and the corpora PDRS 1.0 and CLASSLA-web.sr, which contain a significant number of documents from the Serbian web

    Balkan Vampires: Society, Politics, Representation

    No full text
Balkan Vampires examines how vampire motifs from Balkan folklore have permeated modern sociocultural and political realms, exploring their role in rural traditions and transformation under global influences. The book builds on extensive fieldwork conducted in village communities across Serbia, the cradle of vampire lore, where the author has been able to record numerous stories, memories, and testimonies of residents. The research reveals the vampire not merely as a mythical figure but as a potent symbol in cultural and political discourse. The chapters demonstrate that vampire narratives are not just remnants of traditional rural beliefs but are actively engaged in shaping contemporary cultural and social identities. The author analyzes the persistence and adaptability of vampire motifs, demonstrating their relevance in expressing community fears, challenging societal norms, and navigating the tensions between local traditions and global influences. Drawing on a wealth of ethnographic material, the book will be of interest to scholars of anthropology, cultural studies, folklore, demonology, history, and beyond

What is Novel in the Concept of Green Infrastructure? The Case Study of the Central Zone of New Belgrade Landscape Value

Old wine in a new bottle. The concept of green infrastructure (GI) has deep roots in planning and urban planning practice, so that today it is often referred to as the metaphor: Old wine in a new bottle. From the initial “route” that is useful from the aspect of the quality of the environment in the city, today, in the time of climate change, GI is spoken of as “the way to a certain future of urban areas”. It is, in fact, a concept that was developed as an “antithesis” to the grey infrastructure, so that in urban and spatial planning, green spaces would gain the value of resources and a vital element of the structure and functioning of space. However, literature analysis provides insight into the conceptual ambiguity of green infrastructure, the insufficient development of its practical application in spatial planning and protection, as well as its relationship to the system of urban green spaces and ecological networks. In response to the previous findings, this paper presents an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis of the process of transformation of the urban landscape of the Central Zone of New Belgrade, which received in 2021 the status of a cultural asset, categorised as a spatial cultural-historical unit. Furthermore, starting from the close reading of the key theoretical positions embedded in the conceptualisation and construction of New Belgrade, we have considered its open green spaces as a feature of great spatial/landscape value that is not recognised as a part of a cultural heritage in the proper measure. In that context, we continue our investigation through landscape character assessment — a holistic approach to interpreting the landscape values and ecosystem services, adopted here to large post-WWII housing estates. Investigation leads to the development of corresponding time-based guidelines for protecting and revitalising open green spaces within modern built heritage, threatened by contemporary challenges of urban decay and deterioration

Entangled Narratives: Imagining and Crossing Borders in the Mediterranean

    No full text
This paper examines the dynamics of frontier zones in the medieval and early modern Mediterranean by tracing intersecting political, religious, social, and material practices that produced and transformed boundaries between Christian and Muslim polities. Combining close readings of archival and printed sources with a comparative, trans-regional perspective, the study highlights how official elite narratives and local, everyday interactions produced divergent and overlapping imaginaries of the frontier. It shows that frontiers operated both as instruments of projection for rulers and intellectuals and as permeable spaces where commerce, ransom, pilgrimage, monastic networks, and gift exchange reshaped identities and territorial concepts. Attention to the circulation of people and artefacts reveals how objects acquired new meanings as they crossed linguistic and confessional divides. Through comparative case analysis the paper demonstrates common patterns in bottom-up processes of border-making alongside regionally specific practices, arguing that only a multilayered, trans-Mediterranean approach can capture the full complexity of Christian–Muslim encounters and the historical formation of borders in the Mediterranean world
