Get PDFYears ago the problem of self-poisoning was not recognised. People poisoned themselves, of course, but few survived.The picture today is different. In Edinburgh more than a thousand adults are admitted to hospital each year after such an act. The great majority of those who poison themselves survive, and this fact goes far towards explaining why the practice has spread.Poisoning used to be regarded as fatal. Instances of someone taking poisons deliberately to harm himself, but with the intent ion of surviving, are hard to find. Juliet did so, but Romeo had so little thought that she might not be dead that he killed himself in despair. He knew, as everyone knew, that if you took poison you died. This is not so today.The growth of pharmaceutical products has brought about the change. The growth of self poisoning has come about in the train of a rapid rise in number of highly dangerous preparations employed therapeutically, together with a great contemporaneous increase in prescribing. The way has thus been opened for self -poisoning to flourish, since few who practise it have their minds set on dying

Get PDFA review based on a dissertation read before the Society on 10th December, 1965.This article concentrates on (i) the immunological basis, (ii) pathophysiological mechanisms, and (iii) control (theoretical and practical) of the immediate-type allergy.Antigen-antibody reactions constitute an important group of defences, facilitating phagocytosis and blocking the toxic effects of parasitic poisons. The reaction confers ‘immunity’. The combination of antigen and antibody is, however, not always beneficial. Pathological reactions as severe or more severe than the affect of the antigen alone arc sometimes noticed. Hypersensitivity or allergic reactions form major examples of such conditions. Allergy or hypersensitivity may be defined as a state in which the animal reacts in an excessive way to the introduction of an antigen or a hapten even though the antigen or hapten may be innocuous. Not all instances of hypersensitivity enjoy the identification of the exciting antigens, the mediating antibodies and the mechanisms of tissue damage

Get PDFFor the back-street abortionist business is booming. It is commonly estimated that some 100,000 criminal abortions are performed annually in England and Wales alone. Maternal deaths from these are, according to Goodhart (1964) of the order of 35 per year in England and Wales, giving a surprisingly low maternal mortality of 0.35 per 1,000 which equals maternal mortality from all other causes. Serious maternal morbidity, however, defies estimate but must be alarmingly high. Even in hospital, the operation carries serious risk of complication, which is obviously greatly increased in a tenement kitchen. Cervical in competence, causing repeated miscarriage, serious infection, especially pelvic peritonitis, and severe anaemia from haemorrhage are but some of the scars which a woman may carry for many years, as a result of such treatment. The scar of the psychological trauma may well be carried for life

Changing Concepts of the Cause of Diabetes Mellitus
Get PDFProbably the first allusion to diabetes is contained in the papyrus Ebers, dated at about 1500 B .C . and the symptomatology of the disorder was described by Aretaeus in the 1st century A.D. Prior to the late 17th century the causation of diabetes was variously ascribed to excessive food, alcohol, sex or grief or to maladies of the stomach, arteries, blood, nervous and other systems. However, in 1683 the Swiss Brunner recorded that pancreatectomised dogs displayed great thirst and polyuria before dying in coma, and in 1788 Cawley reported destruction of the pancreatic tissue in a patient dying of diabetes. These observations were largely disregarded until further evidence of a possible relationship between diabetes and the pancreas was provided by the classical experiments of von Mering and Minkowski in 1890. Twenty years earlier Langerhans, when aged 20, had described the islets to which his name was given in 1893 by Laguesse who was the first to suggest that they might produce an internal secretion. Schafer in 1895 considered that this secretion might profoundly modify the carbohydrate metabolism of the tissues and the name “ insuline” was proposed by de Meyer in 1909

It was something to be done with care, for the pages are brittle and cachetic. The regular, flowing, almost copper-plate writing is only s lightly faded and is eminently legible. We, who can achieve immaculate script only through the medium of machinery, might pause and consider the scholarship of our predecessors who wrote Greek, Latin or English with artists’ hands
