    Ski-ing Injuries

    Get PDF
Injuries sustained while ski-ing do not differ significantly from injuries due to other sports. Tears of the medial meniscus however are rare in ski injuries compared with football. The increasing frequency of the unstable boot top fracture due to the modern high rigid boot resembles the type of fracture sustained in a sliding tackle on the football field.Discussion on ski injuries therefore should emphasise prevention rather than treatment. Statistics suggest certain common factors in the clinical history of ski injuries which indicates the need for a safety code which might reduce the incidence of injury and thereby increase the pleasure derived from this sport. In this article common ski injuries will be mentioned, prevention will be discussed and a safety code for skiers will be suggested

A Comparison of the Scotland Yard Test Amidoprine/H202 and “Okokit”* in the Routine Detection of Faecal Occult Blood

    Get PDF
Concern about the possible carcinogenic properties of o-tolidine and benzidine has led to a search for less harmful reagents for use in the detection of occult blood in faeces. The new preparations — Amidopyrine and Okokit — were compared with the standard method of the Scotland Yard Test. Amidopyrine and Okokit are believed to be non-carcinogenic reagents.  The active ingredient of the Ham’s reagent used in the Scotland Yard Test is aminophthalhydroxide and is likewise not implicated in carcinogenesis. The chief aim of this study was purely practical in elucidating, for purposes of sideroom testing, the efficacy of the three tests.  In the Scotland Yard Test, Ham’s reagent (5 drops) is added to each labelled carton containing a faecal sample to be tested. This is followed by the addition of 5 drops of H2O2.  The fluorescent blue / purple colour, indicating a positive result, appears immediately, and the shadow cast by the container wall is sufficient for the colour to be seen readily in daylight.  No sample preparation is required and sequential testing of many specimens is possible using this technique

    Society News

Perhaps the most encouraging feature of the 235th Session’s busy programme was the revival of interest in the presentation of Dissertations by members. In recent years relatively few have taken this opportunity to express their knowledge and views on a subject of their own choice and to defend them if necessary in the face of all comers. One only needs to look at the list of topics chosen to appreciate that the interests of Society members are still as wide as they have ever been: “Lignocaine — its rational use in Clinical Practice”, T.F. Benton: “There\u27s nowt as queer as Folk”, R. Bolas: “The Effects of Prolonged Spaceflight on Man”. W. A. Branford: “Out Damned Clot” , I. J. Cartlidge: “Carcinoid Tumour” , N. J. Douglas: “Consciousness Altering Drugs” — Man’s Search for Unreality”, A.R.W. Forrest: “Some Aspects of Cystic Fibrosis”, Diana Girdwood: “ Concerning the Function of 3\u27 5\u27 Cyclic Adenosine Monophosphate in Brain”, M.A.R. Knock.  Happily, at the time of writing, a sneak preview of the new syllabus reveals that the 236th Session also has its full quota of Dissertations

    Fetal Pathology in Spontaneous Abortion

    Get PDF
Pregnancy is a truly remarkable process. While a single fertilised cell is developing into a complete individual, the mother usually tolerates this rapidly growing "transplant", her enlarging uterus and the accompanying dramatic hormonal changes with equanimity. Perhaps it is hardly surprising that such a complex process sometimes fails.Changing times have influenced the degree of importance society attaches to fetal and perinatal loss. It is not very long since recurrent pregnancy, high infant mortality and stillbirth were accepted with resignation, as normal hazards of living. However with effective contraception, careful obstetric supervision and the improvements in nutrition, hygiene and health which have come to affluent western societies, the present expectation is of a chosen number of pregnancies, precisely timed and with perfect outcome. Yet about one in ten couples is infertile; nearly one in five recognised pregnancies ends in spontaneous abortion (1) and an even greater number of unrecognised early pregnancies are aborted (2). Fetal loss is still a common problem

    Firbush 2001

Perhaps not content with the absence of climbing from the weekend activities several of the residents displayed their agility with a show of table mountaineering. Meanwhile Simon was determined that Andy enjoy a nocturnal swim in the lake. His lack of subtlety, approaching Andy brandishing a luggage strap perhaps gave him away and another Finch masterplan was foiled. As the windsurfers devised some masochistic game involving using newspaper clubs to beat each other I retired to my quarters.Firbush, situated on the south bank of Loch Tay, has been home to the University’s Centre for Sport and Exercise outdoor centre for around 30 years. The outward, moderate log cabin appearance masks a well furnished an equipped interior (no telly - but you can see a satellite picture of weather in Africa though!). It primarily caters for weekday reading parties and weekend clubs and societies. This weekend the RMS were joined by the windsurfing club

Anthrax after September 11th 2001- What to look for and how to treat it

    Get PDF
Anthrax is a serious bacterial infection with a particularly high mortality in its gastrointestinal, pulmonary, and meningitic forms with a worldwide distribution, although it is most common in the developing world. Gastrointestinal and pulmonary anthrax results in death within hours or a few days of the onset of serious symptoms and the diagnosis is usually made post-mortem. Treatment of wild type anthrax is usually with penicillin in high dose. The production of anthrax for large scale bioterrorism is difficult and requires sophisticated facilities. There is a greater risk that anthrax used as a bioterrorist weapon will be antibiotic resistant and ciprofloxacin is a more appropriate antibiotic choice until the antibiotic sensitivity of the anthrax strain being deployed becomes known. Post exposure prophylaxis should be continued for two months due to the long delay that sometimes occurs before spores germinate once within the human host. A live vaccine is available but requires a large number of injections and its use is largely limited to military personnel
