    Get PDF
Purpose: Most studies on the implications of social media are conducted prior to the pandemic, and either pursue a holistic approach to the effect of social media or focus on the effect of well-established platforms such as Facebook. This study investigates the impact of TikTok use on employees’ cognitive functions, specifically their attention span. The study also investigates the relationship between post-pandemic escalated use of social media and employees’ attention span.   Methodology: Utilizing a quantitative methodological approach, this study collected data from 211 TikTok users to test for three hypotheses: the negative effect of time spent on TikTok on attention span, the negative effect of emotional connection to TikTok use on attention span, and the negative effect of time spent on social media on attention span. Data was collected using questionnaires and the hypotheses were tested using SPSS software for statistical analysis.   Findings: The study provides empirical evidence on the impact of social media and TikTok use on decreased attention span. Findings highlight this negative relationship being an outcome of time spent on the platform as well as the emotional connection to this use.   Practical & Social Implications: Findings are of practical implication for employees and the general society in recognizing the impact of TikTok and other social media platforms on their cognitive functions. Findings also provide empirical evidence to organizations for understanding factors influencing their members’ performance.   Originality/Value: This study contributes to extant literature in two ways: First, it enriches our understanding of the implications of recent patterns of social media use and fast-paced content for cognitive functions. Second, this research contributes to the wider discourse on the implications of information and communication technologies (ICTs) for the workplace, highlighting the negative effect on employees’ attention span, and potentially their performance

    Get PDF
Purpose: The gender pay gap in South Africa has greatly reduced since the implementation of the Employment Equity Act in 1998. However, there is still a pay gap that cannot be sufficiently explained and addressed by government leaders and scholars. Scholars, policymakers, the radical left, and feminists have carefully highlighted and addressed what is considered to be the major causes, such as segregation of women, women's stereotypes, marginalization of women, wage penalties due to time away from work, child nurturing responsibilities given to women, and inequality in salaries and remunerations. However, the World Bank reported that from 2007 on, the gender pay gap in South Africa was no longer showing any sign of reduction. It was stagnant and thereafter oscillating. As such the purpose of this research is to investigate the causes of the stagnation and the oscillation, and to provide recommendations.   Theoretical Framework: This research used multivariate analysis theory to make further contributions on the causes of gender pay inequality in South Africa in order to address the stagnation and oscillation of the existing pay gap.   Design/Methodology/Approach: The research method used is qualitative approach. The research design comprises men and women who are already in the work industry in both private and public sector.   Findings: This research found that gender pay gap in South Africa is caused by women’s family-career crisis as a main contributor, followed by interests and personality traits, equality of opportunity and career selection.   Research Implications: This research paper gives light to further research in Women’s family-career crisis as it seems to be the major contributor to gender pay gap in South Africa. The assessment of how impactful family-career crisis is on gender pay gap is also essential in order to understand the magnitude of it on gender pay gap in South Africa.   Originality/Value: This research paper found significant causes of gender pay gap such as ‘family career-crisis’ that shows to heavily contribute to the gender pay in South Africa. This might further give clarity to the governments on the existence of gender pay gap. Moreover this research may help in redefining the government policies on the approach of gender pay gap

Nostalgic Marketing and its Antecedents on Gen X

    Get PDF
Purpose: This study aims to see the extent of Borobudur temple as heritage tourism with neuromarketing/nostalgia as its main indicator.   Theoretical Framework: The basic theory used is neuromarketing theory. Nostalgia as neuromarketing is defined as an emotion that has implications for a series of complex psychological processes, including social behavior. This social behavior is also related to a person's consumption behavior towards certain purchases which creates a nostalgic impact on that person. This consumption behavior is related to the marketing strategy implemented by the marketing object.   Design/Methodology: The research method used is the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) SmartPLS version 4 model. With validity, reliability and goodness of fit analysis tools to answer the research hypothesis.   Findings: The results obtained by nostalgia marketing have a positive and significant effect on brand reputation, service quality, and premium price. Brand reputation and premium price do not mediate nostalgic marketing on customer satisfaction, while service quality mediates. Last result, brand reputation and premium price had no effect on customer satisfaction, while service quality had a positive and significant effect.   Practical and Social Effects: Tourists' perception of tourist attractions is formed not only on the basis of individual knowledge and beliefs about the characteristics of the site, but also their feelings and perceptions of the destination. Thus, if we want to strengthen again, there is a need for an age-old relationship between tourists and brands. With constant satisfaction, respondent satisfaction remains high to an insignificant price, and commitment and loyalty will be formed.   Value or Origin: The many historical tourism sectors in Indonesia and the high number of older visitors make this sector a source of economic and regional growth. This is reinforced by data from Borobudur Temple as the largest Buddhist temple heritage tourist attraction in the world, where 23% of visitors or tourists are over 50 years old. At that age, what motivation makes them visit if not memories and historical facts of the past. Remembering the past, it is easiest to visit the subject directly, this is important in studying neuromarketing and emotions in business
