Innovation Readiness Assessment toward Research Commercialization: Case of Surfactants for Food Processing
Determining the readiness of research toward commercialization becomes significant issues encountered by the institution working on research, innovation and technology development. Particularly in food processing area, the issue is much more involving other aspects aside from technological matter, hence, an assessment tool should be consider these aspects altogether to capture integrated perspective. This study explored the use of Innovation Readiness Level to measures the maturity of research from the perspective of technology, market, organization, partnership and risk. Case of surfactant researches in the Research Center for Chemistry, Indonesian Institute of Sciences will be deployed as examples of study. According to the assessment, it has been obtained the surfactant recommended for further development towards commercialization of R & D results for food processing, i.e. Glycerol Mono Stearate (GMS), which has reached the level of IRL 3. This finding resulted some implications for improvements strategies to foster the research toward commercialization
Patent Data for Comparative Study: Case study of Top Aspirants in Bioinformatics Industry
Innovation and technology are considered as a subject of success and achievement to the firm. The comparative study represents an essential procedure to identify the innovation and technological capabilities of major players involved in the bioinformatics related inventions. The aim of the research is to map out the top firms and identify their strategically important technologies. In view of this, the comparative analysis of major firms in bioinformatics industry is carried out using patent information. Herein the top three assignees are considered and based on this further analysis is performed. The top companies’ trend suggests that Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. is the major player in bioinformatics research. Thus, we have tried to develop an overview on their patenting trend and important concerned areas of research. Also, our results indicate that the application of computational tools is being utilized for most of the research areas like the study of genomics and proteomics, sequence categorization and their structural prediction
Success Factors of Radical Breakthgrough ICT Projects – Comparison of Hardware and Software Cases
Because technology pushed product development projects are risky and failure rates are high, the success factors are valuable knowledge for the management of development-intensive firms. This paper provides a comparison of success factor weighting between hardware and software product development projects in the ICT industry improving existing success factor research. We analyze qualitatively interview data from nine intentionally selected start-up firms and identify which success factors were clearly supported by HW and SW firms, and in which area different types of firms could benchmark each other. The practical aim of this paper is that it helps management to recognize the real actions needed to reduce product development risks in HW and SW projects
Legal Model of Brazilian Science and Technology Parks
The aim of this study is to analyze the legal model of Brazilian Science and Technology Parks and point out the benefits and weaknesses resulting from their legal feature which can affect their management model. The research analyzed 30 parks which operate in Brazil. In five of them, it was not possible to identify their legal model. The results showed that most parks have their legal system as Foundation (36.67%) and as Association (26.67%) configuration. Besides, 13.33% of the analyzed parks are managed by the Government. Five parks have a social organization status, as follows: Botucatu Technology Park, São José dos Campos Technology Park, Porto Digital, Sergipe Technology Park and Paraíba Technology Park. Two parks work as joint capital companies (Sapiens Park of Florianópolis and Tecnoparque of Curitiba). The study also showed that the social organizations do not follow the public system and therefore do not need to conduct bids. However, such organizations do not have some benefits such as immunity and exemption from taxes, like the foundations do
Automatic Visual Inspection of Grains Quality In Agroindustry 4.0
With the advent of Industry 4.0, the use of new technologies, robotization and advanced manufacturing has been extended to the agricultural sector, with the aim of increasing productivity, reducing environmental impacts, increasing profits and improving the quality of products, giving rise to the terms Precision Agriculture, Agribusiness 4.0, Agriculture 4.0 and Agroindustry 4.0. If on the one hand much is being said about the adoption of new technologies in the stages of land preparation, planting and harvesting, on the other hand very little is said about the processing of agricultural products using, for example, automated systems for visual inspection of quality. Internet of things: is there a new technological position?
In the last decade, the internet has become an everyday tool of people and organizations and, at the same time, indispensable to the proper functioning of business. With the growing increase in network infrastructures and mass popularization of the high-speed network, a breakthrough has emerged related to the use of the Internet, making it a global platform to allow intelligent machines and objects to communicate autonomously. This possibility allows content and services to be around people, always available, facilitating communication and opening the way for new applications; enabling new forms of work, interaction and entertainment; developing a new standard of living and work. This new standard is made possible by advances in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to a new concept defined as Internet of Things - IoT. Are technology business incubators fulfilling their objectives? a study of the tbi's performance located in Brazil
Technology business incubators (TBI) are considered an alternative for promoting entrepreneurship, innovation, employment and income generation, the maintenance of companies and consequently, local and regional development. However, despite the high number of incubators and investment made, the initiatives to assess the results of incubators are limited; little is known about the success of these in supporting the creation and development of new businesses. Within this context, this research analyzed the performance of technology business incubators located in Brazil. According to the proposed objectives, this research is of an exploratory, descriptive and analytical nature, in a quantitative approach that used a survey as a research strategy, obtaining a sample of 97 incubators researched, in a universe of 112 technology business incubators. Through the data analysis, it can be concluded, according to the results presented by the TBI surveyed, that these are beneath the fulfillment of the objectives that they propose so that they are not contributing effectively to the local and regional development. Thus, it is suggested that the TBI's managers reflect on the real reasons why the researched organizations are not achieving the purposes that justify their existence.
Expansion and Evolution of Incubation Programs and Entrepreneurship Development In Incubators In The State of Goiás, Brazil
The objectives of the present study were to investigate the current ecosystem of innovative entrepreneurship in the state of Goiás, Brazil, and provide an overview of its incubators, identifying connections and interactions between these mechanisms and the different agents involved in the perspective of the Triple Helix, to verify the support of business incubators as an element that promotes entrepreneurship in the regional entrepreneurship development process. The used methodology was based on empirical research, with a qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory nature, with the description of the panorama of business incubators in Goiás through a cross-sectional study of ten incubators associated with the Innovation Network of Goiás (Rede Goiana de Inovação or RGI). The results enabled to map the ecosystem of innovative entrepreneurship and obtain an overview of the incubation process in Goiás, contributing to the study and identification of the participation of incubators in the process of entrepreneurship development and as a guide to develop institutional policies and actions to strengthen connections in the existing ecosystem, capable to foster and boost the performance of incubators in favor of local and regional development
The Effect of Technological Posture and Corporate Social Responsibility on Financial Performance Through Corporate Reputation
This paper analyzes the relationship between the company’s technological posture and its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitment, as a business performance determinant. From knowledge-based and stakeholders’ theories a structural equations model of relationships was established and statistically tested through SmartPLS on a sample of 76 Spanish firms from the renewable energy sector. The results of the empirical study suggest that the most proactive companies are able to develop better relationships with stakeholders and are more committed to CSR than those firms characterized as followers or innovation last-movers. Two main reasons are offered in this paper to justify these results: (1) CSR practices help companies to retain the most highly qualified employees, which contributes to maintaining their leadership position; and (2) technological leaders tend to be more highly committed to CSR as a way of collecting valuable knowledge that can be useful to explore new opportunities by means of innovation, enabling the firm to respond more flexibly to market changes and new stakeholders’ needs as well as changes in their preferences. Moreover, CSR initiatives will contribute to the development of high-value intangible assets such as corporate reputation, which in turn will improve the firm’s financial performance
Open Innovation and Cocreation in the Development of New Products: the role of design thinking
Perfumes industry has been exponentially developing due to last decade’s technological development, requiring larger investments and creative capacity from fine chemicals industry. Since creative capacity may be maximized through creation strategies and methodologies such as co-creation and design thinking, the aim of this paper is to analyze the role of design thinking in the process of co-creation among competitors. In order to achieve such aim, a unique case study was conducted in a representative enterprise in the Brazilian perfume industry, which was responsible for a triad co-creation process of a new product, involving two foreign competing companies in the fine chemicals industry.
