Introduction to Literary Powerplays – Jewish Authors and Power in the Graeco-Roman Period
This special thematic section of Judaica: Neue digitale Folge brings together five articles first presented as papers at an online workshop at the University of Bern in June 2021. The workshop “Jewish authors and power in the Graeco-Roman period was dedicated to the complex relationships, both experienced and imagined, between ancient Jewish authors and power systems and structures throughout the Hellenistic and Roman periods. It did so by exploring these and related themes while relying on diverse sources and questions, such as the analysis of texts from the Hebrew Bible and questions regarding calendar reforms during the rule of Seleucid kings. Implementing the ideas of post-colonial studies on power and power relations, the papers focused on the different fields where power structures and relations played a role in antiquity and put forward and understanding of power not only as physical dominance in various forms, but also as soft powers that emerges from sociocultural structures

The purpose of the paper was to analyze media representations, production context, and social practices that legitimized the discourses published in National Geographic Magazine on Colombian Nature from 1903 to 1952. The theories that guided our research are included in Stuart Hall\u27s Theory of Representations, Critical Theories, and the decolonial turn. Our methodological design used Fairclough\u27s three-dimensional model as a unit of analysis with 9 reports on Colombia. Our research found the following media representations: sublime spectacle, land of economic opportunities, desirable place to collect scientific “data”, land of adventure and consumption, land of the future, a laboratory, adventure. The social practices that created and institutionalized this particular discourse on Nature were positivism, Pan-Americanism, and manifest destiny in the rise of mass journalism, the development of photoengraving technology, and the rise and institutionalization of new academic disciplines oriented by positivism.
The Myth of Inventing the Many-Ηeaded Nome
Among extant sources, only Pindar (Pyth. 12) and, about 9 centuries later, Nonnus of Panopolis (Dionys. 40. 227–233; 24. 36–38) tell the story of the inventing of the many-headed nome (an instrumental aulos piece depicting with musical means the victory of Perseus over the gorgons): it is said to have been created by Athena to imitate the wailing of the gorgons over decapitated Medusa, of which she was an eyewitness. It is argued that Pindar himself was the author of this etiological legend: he proceeded from two already current myths, that of Perseus patronized by Athena and that of Athena inventing aulos playing, and combined them to please his client, Midas the aulos player, who most probably won the Pythian victory performing exactly the many-headed nome. Nonnus borrowed the myth from Pindar. Geographical specifications, which are different in Pindar and Nonnus, do not contradict this conclusion.
