Resolving contiguous vowels across word boundaries in Spanish: L2 learners, levels, and tasks
Get PDFThis paper reports on the application of synalepha, the phonological process of merging or linking contiguous vowels across word boundaries, as in mi amigo [mi̯a.ˈmi.ɣ̞o], meaning ‘my friend’. We examine two English-speaking L1 groups learning Spanish as an L2 compared to a Spanish monolingual-speaking group and include a narrative-retell and a reading task. In the reading task, the intermediate learner group produced linked or connected vowel sequences in only 30% of the potential contiguous sequences, compared to a frequency of linked vowels at 74% by advanced graduate student learners. The intermediate learners increased the frequency of linking contiguous vowels to 49% in the narrative-retell task, whereas the advanced L2 speakers slightly reduced their linking rate to 68%. The Mexican monolingual speaker comparison group produced linked speech in a narrative-retell task at a rate of 93%. These findings show that the application of phonological processes is impacted by task type and has implications for classroom teaching activities that incorporate narrative-retell tasks to encourage monolingual patterns of vowel linking
Proteshtags.: Zur Herstellung von (Protest-)Ereignissen durch situationsbezogene Hashtags
Get PDFThis article aims to show how events are constituted through the use of situation-related hashtags and how the constitution of events can be understood by analysing situation-related hashtags. The events described are essentially political protest events that take place in situations of street protest. In the context of protest events, hashtags are used on Social Media to mark individual postings as belonging to events. Similarly, event and situation-related hashtags are used to (co-)constitute events in the first place. The word formation of protest event hashtags (proteshtags for short) follows a specific pattern: in addition to the hash as hashtag operator, they are composed of a place name or a corresponding topos-referential acronym as well as a chrono-referential date in the form DDMM (days and months). Using a data set of Twitter posts sent between November 2019 and October 2020, it is shown a) which events were marked by protest event hashtags during this period and b) how these events were tweeted about

Get PDFThis study analyses the level of formality in e-mails sent by 378 university students (246 Italian and 132 international) to lecturers, with the aim of observing the management of the formal register in academic communication via e-mail. The analysis focuses on the detection of specific linguistic features such as punctuation, use of polite pronouns, informal or spoken syntactic structures. The results show that there are common features in the ability to manage the formal register in the written production of L1 and L2 students, although significant differences emerge in the use of punctuation and polite pronouns, mostly due to interlinguistic interference. These findings have implications for the design of teaching interventions, suggesting that an academic writing course should be designed with an emphasis on awareness of linguistic variation

Get PDFThe paper aims to describe the main methodological issues in the digitization of the Atlante Linguistico Italiano (ALI), a fundamental resource for dialectological research on the dialects of Italy. Despite its scientific relevance, ALI remains difficult to access due to its printed format and heterogeneous data structure. The project seeks to overcome these limitations by developing a structured, queryable database integrated into a digital cartographic interface. This paper presents the main methodological challenges encountered in the digitization process, including data standardization, phonetic transcription encoding, and georeferencing of linguistic points. The first results highlight the potential of DigitALI for socio-historical research, enabling large-scale analyses of dialectal variation
Erstellung und Verwendung eines Grafiksystems für das Gressoneyer Titsch: Zwischen Standard- und Spontanschrift
Get PDFThis paper explores the history of the efforts to establish a codified and transferable orthographic system for the Titsch language of Gressoney, an idiom of Alemannic origin spoken in Italy. It also examines the unique characteristics of spontaneous writings (cf. Dal Negro/ Guerini/Iannàccaro 2015: 32f.) by elderly native speakers. Although Titsch is their first language (L1), these individuals now predominantly use Italian for both written and oral communication. The analysis highlights how Italian orthographic norms have increasingly influenced Titsch writing, largely due to an incomplete understanding of the language’s standard orthography. This lack of knowledge stems from the absence of formal education in Titsch. Indeed, no members of the Walser community have been formally taught to write in their Germanic variety according to a orthographic norm

Get PDFThis article looks at the global development of demand for German as a foreign language and addresses selected questions about the consequences of these developments for German language education, the training of teachers to teach German and the development of research worldwide. Given the (growing and often insufficiently covered) demand for teachers in many regions of the world, questions arise as to the academic qualifications that future teachers and young researchers will need and the role that knowledge of empirical research methodological should play in academic training in the academic studies in German Studies and German as a foreign language. The perspectives associated with research methodology training are discussed and examples of suitable teaching and learning materials available in the DAAD programme Dhoch3 will be presented.

Get PDFDer Artikel untersucht die aktuelle Situation der digitalen Archivierung in Kommunalarchiven der Schweiz und zeigt auf, vor welchen Herausforderungen vor allem kleinere Gemeinden stehen. Während viele kantonale Archive schon entsprechende Infrastrukturen haben oder dabei sind, diese einzuführen, fehlt es auf kommunaler Ebene häufig an Fachpersonal, finanziellen Mitteln und politischer Unterstützung. Die Untersuchung zeigt, dass eine einheitliche Lösung nicht realistisch ist. Vielmehr müssen digitale Archivierungsstrategien an die jeweiligen kommunalen Gegebenheiten angepasst werden. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden vier Szenarien für die digitale Archivierung in politischen Gemeinden vorgestellt: eigenständige Lösungen, Anbindung an Staatsarchive, kommunale Verbundmodelle sowie Kooperationen mit privatwirtschaftlichen Anbietern. Die Analyse vergleicht diese Ansätze hinsichtlich ihrer praktischen Umsetzbarkeit sowie ihrer organisatorischen und rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen.L\u27article examine la situation actuelle de l\u27archivage numérique dans les archives communales de Suisse et met en lumière les défis auxquels sont confrontées les petites communes, plus particulièrement. Alors que de nombreux centres d’archives cantonales disposent déjà d\u27infrastructures adéquates ou sont en train de les implémenter, le personnel spécialisé, les moyens financiers et le soutien politique font souvent défaut au niveau communal. L\u27enquête montre qu\u27une solution uniforme n\u27est pas réaliste. Les stratégies d\u27archivage numérique doivent plutôt être adaptées à chaque situation communale. Dans ce contexte, l\u27étude présente quatre scénarios pour l\u27archivage numérique dans les communes politiques : des solutions autonomes, le raccordement aux Archives de l\u27État, des modèles de regroupement communal ainsi que des mandats à des fournisseurs du secteur privé. L\u27analyse compare ces approches du point de vue de leur faisabilité pratique ainsi que des conditions cadre organisationnelles et juridiques
