United by Sports? Key Factors affecting Sports Participation in a Sports-based Initiative to Promote Social Integration in Segregated Communities

    No full text
Introduction Sweden\u27s society has become ethnically diverse, yet social exclusion and segregation remain prevalent problems, particularly in employment, housing, and education (Dahlstedt & Ekholm, 2018). Acknowledging this challenge, the Swedish government, the Swedish Sports Confederation, and sports organizations have invested in sports to promote integration. Sports for integration initiatives are perceived as a tool for enhancing social integration, physical activity, and social capital in segregated cities (Agergaard, 2018). Regular participation is essential for achieving these goals, making it crucial to understand why individuals participate or not in such initiatives and develop social capital (Flensner et al., 2021). While previous research investigated structural and sociocultural engagement boundaries, few studies examine specific program factors that influence participants\u27 willingness to engage, particularly from their own perspectives. This study addresses this gap by investigating the key facilitators and barriers within a sports-based program leading to social integration and the development of social capital among participants from various backgrounds in a highly segregated Swedish city. Methods Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine program participants, two youth leaders, and the program manager to gain insights into intra- and interpersonal experiences and perceptions regarding social connections and the development of social capital within the program. Using qualitative content analysis, findings were discussed though the lens of the social integration encompassing four interconnected dimensions (interaction, identification, culturalization, placement) and social capital theory. This framework allows to investigate factors influencing participants\u27 engagement in sports-based integration initiatives, resulting in the identification of key contributing elements (Esser, 2009). Results/Discussion The study concludes that key factors, such as interactions with people from diverse backgrounds in safe environments, a physical activity and education component, exceptional events, and networking opportunities, significantly enrich participants\u27 experiences and encourage continued participation in sports for integration initiatives. This not only contributes to social capital development and social integration into society but also provides valuable insights into factors that need to be included in initiatives to enhance participation and lead to effective initiatives. However, challenges like recruiting and retaining participants and inconsistent attendance are crucial factors hindering the effectiveness of these initiatives in promoting social integration. This study offers valuable insights on benefits and challenges of sport-based programs in fostering social integration within segregated societies, aiding in the formulation of more effective initiatives and policies. Future research should explore long-term outcomes and strategies to improve participant retention. References Agergaard, S. (2018).

    No full text

    No full text

    No full text

Language Practices in “Francophone Africa”: A Legacy of European Colonialism

[This short opinion piece by Prof. Mufwene does not have an abstract. He starts with a reflection on the label "Francophone Africa". In his view,  this \u27label “eclipses” the significance of autochthonous languages used as vernaculars and, for some of them, also as regional lingua francas.\u27 He concludes: \u27The use of a European language as the official one is part of the socioeconomic structure inherited from the colonial period, which should be replaced with a new, (more) inclusive world order.\u27

“Waxing the Knees of the Gods” in Juvenal (10. 55) and Prudentius (Apoth. 457)

    Get PDF
The phrase genua incerare deorum in Iuv. 10. 55 is not related to the practice of attaching wax tablets with vows to statues of gods: (1) this metaphor would be far-fetched; (2) the tablets were attached to thighs, not knees; and (3) the tablets affixed to statues were sealed and contained secret vows, which does not fit Juvenal’s context. Instead, it refers to the praying gesture of clasping the addressee’s knees by analogy with waxing techniques, the verb incerare functions as a metaphor for rubbing, and with regard to the knees, ‘rubbing’ implies intensive touching: cf. genua (con)fricare in Pl. Asin. 670; 678. Prudentius’ genua incerare Dianae (Apoth. 447) suggests the same interpretation. Conversely, waxing images in Prud. c. Symm. 1. 203 and Ham. 404 is unrelated to Iuv. 10. 55, being connected instead to Iuv. 12. 88 (of the images of Lares). Chr. Gnilka’s suspicion that Prudentius was ignorant of pagan cultic practices is unfounded. Nuda in Vitruv. 7. 9. 4 is problematic and, in view of the close lexical parallelism with Plin. NH 33. 122 (nitescunt), should be emended to nitidanda. Plaut. Asin. 670; 678: genua (con)fricare. Symm.

Part IV. Two generations ago, Robert Renehan published a series of articles expanding, refining, and correcting entries in the 9th edition of the monumental Liddell–Scott–Jones Greek-English Lexicon (1940) as supplemented by Barber and his fellow editors (1968). These notes on the letter lambda in the new Brill Dictionary of Ancient Greek are offered in a similar spirit. Brill Dictionary of Ancient Greek

The effects of altitude training on hormonal response in professional cyclists

    No full text
Introduction The Alps offer numerous possibilities for athletes to prepare competitions at altitude training with the aims of further gains for near sea-level performances through physiological adaptations. Hematological adaptations (e.g., increase in hemoglobin mass (Hbmass)), improved oxygen delivery or peripheral adaptations at the muscle level have been thoroughly investigated in the past decades. While the impact of prolonged sojourns at altitude on hematological variations is increasingly well understood, research is very limited on the hormonal responses to altitude, and the underlying mechanisms underpinning putative anabolic and erythropoietic adaptations in elite endurance athletes. Methods 21 professional cyclists (25.4 ± 3.3 yrs, 69.8 ± 5.0 kg, maximal aerobic power 560 ± 34 W) underwent a 3-weeks altitude training camp at an altitude of 2050 m (inspired oxygen pressure 115 mmHg, Kühtai, Austria) while training between 500 and 2500 m of altitude (Live-High Train-Low (LHTL) approach). Total hemoglobin mass (Hbmass) and plasma volume (PV) were determined by CO-rebreathing at the start and end of the altitude sojourn. Additional blood samples were taken two weeks before, 72 h after and 10 days after the training camp to monitor i) steroidal hormones (testosterone), and ii) endocrine response (Insuline-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1)). Results At the end of the altitude training camp, Hbmass had increased in average by 3.7% (+40 g, p<0.001) while PV was decreased by 5.7% (-216 mL, p=0.002). During the 21 days at altitude, a significant increase was observed for testosterone (from 5.2 ± 2.6 to 8.3 ± 2.7 ng/mL, p<0.001)), and it was still elevated 48 h after returning to low altitude (6.8 ± 2.3 ng/mL) but decreased towards baseline after 10 days (6.59 ± 2.6, p= 0.01). IGF-1 was elevated 48 h after the altitude camp when compared to the initial baseline (273.5 ± 65.1 vs. 235.9 ± 51.6 µg/L, p=0.003). Discussion/Conclusion In summary, this study was the first to monitor hormonal markers over 7 weeks before, during, and after a 3-week altitude training camp in a large cohort of professional cyclists. The increase in both testosterone and IGF-1 during the time course of the altitude sojourn suggests an anabolic stimulus linked to training adaptations. Concomitantly, a positive erythropoietic effect was observed while a moderate decrease in PV reflected a thorough monitoring of fluid balance during the stay at altitude. The individual changes observed for IGF-1 at altitude should additionally be further considered in the context of the newly implemented endocrine passport monitoring this variable for anti-doping purposes. Overall, this study supports positive physiological adaptations in elite endurance athletes following a LHTL training camp planned according to the current state of the art knowledge collected in the past 60 years investigating hypoxic training strategies
