    Teachers\u27 gaze over space and time in a real-world classroom

    Reading students’ faces and their body language, checking their worksheets, and keeping eye contact is a key trait of teacher competence. The new technology of mobile eye-tracking provides researchers with possibilities to explore teaching from the viewpoint of teacher gaze, but also introduces many new method questions. This study had the primary aim to investigate teachers´ attention distribution over space: the number and durations of several types of their gazes, and how their gaze depends on the factors of students´ gender, achievement, and position in the classroom. Results show that teacher gaze was distributed unevenly across both space and time. Teachers looked at the most-watched students 3-8 times more often than at the least-watched ones. Students sitting in the first row and the middle section received significantly more gaze than those sitting outside this zone. All three teachers made more single gaze visits - looking at the students but making no eye contact - than mutual gazes or student material gazes. The three teachers’ gaze distribution also varied substantially from lesson to lesson. Our results are important for understanding teacher behavior in real classrooms, but also point to the relevance of appropriate method design in future classroom studies with eye-tracking

    An eye-tracking study of reading long and short novel and lexicalized compound words

    An eye-tracking experiment examined the recognition of novel and lexicalized compound words during sentence reading. The frequency of the head noun in modifier-head compound words was manipulated to tap into the degree of compositional processing. This was done separately for long (12–16 letter) and short (7-9 letters) compound words. Based on the dual-route race model (Pollatsek et al., 2000) and the visual acuity principle (Bertram & Hyönä, 2003), long lexicalized and novel compound words were predicted to be processed via the decomposition route and short lexicalized compound words via the holistic route. Gaze duration and selective regression-path duration demonstrated a constituent frequency effect of similar size for long lexicalized and novel compound words. For short compound words the constituent frequency effect was negligible for lexicalized words but robust for novel words. The results are consistent with the visual acuity principle that assumes long novel compound words to be recognized via the decomposition route and short lexicalized compound words via the holistic route

    A quantitative analysis of the taxonomy of artistic styles

    Classifying artists and their work as distinct art styles has been an important task of scholars in the field of art history. Due to its subjectivity, scholars often contradict one another. Our project investigated differences in aesthetic qualities of seven art styles through quantitative means. This was achieved with state-of-the-art deep-learning paradigms to generate new images resembling the style of an artist or entire era. We conducted psychological experiments to measure the behavior of subjects when viewing these new art images. Two different experiments were used: In an eye-tracking study, subjects viewed art-style-specific generated images. Eye movements were recorded and then compared between art styles. In a visual singleton search study, subjects had to locate a style-outlier image among three images of an alternative style. Reaction time and accuracy were measured and analyzed. These experiments show that there are measurable differences in behavior when viewing images of varying art styles. From these differences, we constructed hierarchical clusterings relating art styles based on the different behaviors of subjects viewing the samples. Our study reveals a novel perspective on the classification of artworks into stylistic eras and motivates future research in the domain of empirical aesthetics through quantitative means

    To look or not to look: Subliminal abrupt-onset cues influence constrained free-choice saccades

    Subliminal cues have been shown to capture attention and modulate manual response behaviour but their impact on eye movement behaviour is not well-studied. In two experiments, we examined if subliminal cues influence constrained free-choice saccades and if this influence is under strategic control as a function of task-relevancy of the cues. On each trial, a display containing four filled circles at the centre of each quadrant was shown. A central coloured circle indicated the relevant visual field on each trial (Up or Down in Experiment 1; Left or Right in Experiment 2). Next, abrupt-onset cues were presented for 16 ms at one of the four locations. Participants were then asked to freely choose and make a saccade to one of the two target circles in the relevant visual field. The analysis of the frequency of saccades, saccade endpoint deviation and saccade latency revealed a significant influence of the relevant subliminal cues on saccadic decisions. Latency data showed reduced capture by spatially-irrelevant cues under some conditions. These results indicate that spatial attentional control settings as defined in our study could modulate the influence of subliminal abrupt-onset cues on eye movement behaviour. We situate the findings of this study in the attention-capture debate and discuss the implications for the subliminal cueing literature.  &nbsp

    Improving eye–computer interaction interface design: Ergonomic investigations of the optimum target size and gaze-triggering dwell time

    The Midas touch is reflected by the interactive feedback of interface functional elements, and a low level of spatial accuracy is related to the interaction area. This study tried to solve these two problems from the perspective of human-computer interactions and ergonomics. Two experiments were conducted to explore the optimum target size and gaze-triggering dwell time of the eye–computer interaction (ECI) system. Experimental Series 1 was used as the pre-experiment to identify the size that has a greater task completion rate. Experimental Series 2 was used as the main experiment to investigate the optimum gaze-triggering dwell time by using a comprehensive evaluation of the task completion rate, reaction time, and NASA-TLX (Task Load Index). In Experimental Series 1, the optimal element size was determined to be 256 × 256p x2. The conclusion of Experimental Series 2 was that when the dwell time is set to 600 ms, the efficiency of the interface is the highest, and the task load of subjects is minimal as well. Finally, the results of Experiment Series 1 and 2 have positive effects on improving the usability of the interface. The optimal control size and the optimal dwell time obtained from the experiments have certain reference and application value for interface design and software development of the ECI system

    Microsaccades: Empirical Research and Methodological Advances: - Introduction to Part 1 of the Thematic Special Issue

    Recent technical developments and increased affordability of high-speed eye tracking devices have brought microsaccades to the forefront of research in many areas of sensory, perceptual, and cognitive processes. The present thematic issue on “Microsaccades: Empirical Research and Methodological Advances” invited authors to submit original research and reviews encompassing measurements and data analyses in fundamental, translational, and applied studies. We present the first volume of this special issue, comprising 14 articles by research teams around the world. Contributions include the characterization of fixational eye movements and saccadic intrusions in neurological impairments and in visual disease, methodological developments in microsaccade detection, the measurement of fixational eye movements in applied and ecological scenarios, and advances in the current understanding of the relationship between microsaccades and cognition. When fundamental research on microsaccades experienced a renaissance at the turn of the millennium (c.f. Martinez-Conde, Macknik, & Hubel, 2004), one could hardly have been so bold as to predict the manifold applications of research on fixational eye movements in clinic and practice. Through this great variety of areas of focus, some main topics emerge. One such theme is the applicability of microsaccade measures to neurological and visual disease. Whereas microsaccade quantifications have been largely limited to participants with intact visual and oculomotor systems, recent research has extended this interest into the realm of neural and ophthalmic impairment (see Alexander, Macknik, & Martinez-Conde, 2018, for a review). In this volume, Becker et al analyze “Saccadic intrusions in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)” and Kang et al study “Fixational eye movement waveforms in amblyopia”, delving into the characteristics of fast and slow eye movements. Two other articles focus on how the degradation of visual information, which is relevant to many ophthalmic pathologies, affects microsaccadic features. Tang et al investigate the “Effects of visual blur on microsaccades on visual exploration” and conclude that the precision of an image on the fovea plays an important role in the calibration of microsaccade amplitudes during visual scanning. Otero-Millan et al use different kinds of visual stimuli and viewing tasks in the presence or absence of simulated scotomas, to determine the contributions of foveal and peripheral visual information to microsaccade production. They conclude that “Microsaccade generation requires a foveal anchor”. The link between microsaccadic characteristics and cognitive processes has been a mainstay of microsaccade research for almost two decades, since studies in the early 2000s connected microsaccade directions to the spatial location of covert attentional cues (Engbert & Kliegl, 2003; Hafed & Clark, 2002). In the present volume, Dalmaso et al report that “Anticipation of cognitive conflict is reflected in microsaccades”, providing new insights about the top-down modulation of microsaccade dynamics. Ryan et al further examine the relationship between “Microsaccades and covert attention” during the performance of a continuous, divided-attention task, and find preliminary evidence that microsaccades track the ongoing allocation of spatial attention. Krueger et al discover that microsaccade rates modulate with visual attention demands and report that “Microsaccades distinguish looking from seeing”. Taking the ecological validity of microsaccade investigations one step further, Barnhart et al evaluate microsaccades during the observation of magic tricks and conclude that “Microsaccades reflect the dynamics of misdirected attention in magic”. Two articles examine the role of individual differences and intraindividual variability over time on microsaccadic features. In “Reliability and correlates of intra-individual variability in the oculomotor system” Perquin and Bompas find evidence for intra-individual reliability over different time points, while cautioning that its use to classify self-reported individual differences remains unclear. Stafford et al provide a counterpoint in “Can microsaccade rate predict drug response?” by supporting the use of microsaccade occurrence as both a trait measure of individual differences and as a state measure of response to caffeine administration.     Methodological and technical advances are the subjects of three papers in this volume. In “Motion tracking of iris features to detect small eye movements” Chaudhary and Pelz describe a new video-based eye tracking methodology that relies on higher-order iris texture features, rather than on lower-order pupil center and corneal reflection features, to detect microsaccades with high confidence. Munz et al present an open source visual analytics system called “VisME: Visual microsaccades explorer” that allows users to interactively vary microsaccade filter parameters and evaluate the resulting effects on microsaccade behavior, with the goal of  promoting reproducibility in data analyses. In “What makes a microsaccade? A review of 70 years research prompts a new detection method” Hauperich et al review the microsaccade properties reported between the 1940s and today, and use the stated range of parameters to develop a novel method of microsaccade detection. Lastly, Alexander et al switch the focus from the past of microsaccade research to its future, by discussing the recent and upcoming applications of fixational eye movements to ecologically-valid and real-world scenarios. Their review “Microsaccades in applied environments: real-world applications of fixational eye movement measurements” covers the possibilities and challenges of taking microsaccade measurements out of the lab and into the field.   Microsaccades have engaged the interest of scientists from different backgrounds and disciplines for many decades and will certainly continue to do so. One reason for this fascination might be microsaccades’ role as a link between basic sensory processes and high-level cognitive phenomena, making them an attractive focus of interdisciplinary research and transdisciplinary applications. Thus, research on microsaccades will not only endure, but keep evolving as the present knowledge base expands.     Absorbing the gaze, scattering looks: Klimt’s distinctive style and its two-fold effect on the eye of the beholder

    Among the most renowned painters of the early twentieth century, Gustav Klimt is often associated – by experts and laymen alike - with a distinctive style of representation: the visual juxtaposition of realistic features and flattened ornamental patterns. Art historical writing suggests that this juxtaposition allows a two-fold experience; the perception of both the realm of art and the realm of life. While Klimt adopted a variety of stylistic choices in his career, this one popularised his work and was hardly ever used by other artists. The following study was designed to observe whether Klimt’s distinctive style causes a specific behaviour of the viewer, at the level of eye-movements. Twenty-one portraits were shown to thirty viewers while their eye-movements were recorded. The pictures included artworks by Klimt in both his distinctive and non-distinctive styles, as well as other artists of the same historical period. The recorded data show that only Klimt’s distinctive paintings induce a specific eye-movement pattern with alternating longer (“absorbed”) and shorter (“scattered”) fixations. We therefore claim that there is a behavioural correspondence to what art historical interpretations have so far asserted: The perception of “Klimt’s style” can be described as two-fold also at a physiological level

    Testing a calibration-free eye tracker prototype at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna

    Eye tracking research in art viewership is often conducted in a laboratory setting where reproductions must be used in place of original art works and the viewing environment is less natural than in a museum. Recent technological developments have made museum studies possible but head-mounted eye tracking gear and interruptions by researchers still influence the experience of the viewer. In order to find a more ecologically valid way of recording eye movements while viewing artworks, we employed a prototype of a calibration-free remote eye tracker hidden below selected paintings at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Museum visitors were unaware of the study and informed post hoc that we had registered their viewing behavior and asked to give consent for the use of their data. This article presents the study design as well as results from over 800 participants. While the data quality from the eye tracker prototype was not sufficient to conduct the intended analysis on within-painting gaze movements, this study might serve as a step towards an unobtrusive examination of the art viewing experience. It was possible to analyze time spent viewing paintings and those results show that certain paintings consistently drew significantly more prolonged attention from viewers

    Microsaccades during high speed continuous visual search

    Here, we provide an analysis of the microsaccades that occurred during continuous visual search and targeting of small faces that we pasted either into cluttered background photos or into a simple gray background.  Subjects continuously used their eyes to target singular 3-degree upright or inverted faces in changing scenes.  As soon as the participant’s gaze reached the target face, a new face was displayed in a different and random location.  Regardless of the experimental context (e.g. background scene, no background scene), or target eccentricity (from 4 to 20 degrees of visual angle), we found that the microsaccade rate dropped to near zero levels within only 12 milliseconds after stimulus onset.  There were almost never any microsaccades after stimulus onset and before the first saccade to the face.  One subject completed 118 consecutive trials without a single microsaccade.  However, in about 20% of the trials, there was a single microsaccade that occurred almost immediately after the preceding saccade’s offset.  These microsaccades were task oriented because their facial landmark targeting distributions matched those of saccades within both the upright and inverted face conditions.  Our findings show that a single feedforward pass through the visual hierarchy for each stimulus is likely all that is needed to effectuate prolonged continuous visual search.  In addition, we provide evidence that microsaccades can serve perceptual functions like correcting saccades or effectuating task-oriented goals during continuous visual search

    The display makes a difference: A mobile eye tracking study on the perception of art before and after a museum’s rearrangement

    There is increasing awareness that the perception of art is affected by the way it is presented. In 2018, the Austrian Gallery Belvedere redisplayed its permanent collection. Our multi-disciplinary team seized this opportunity to investigate the viewing behavior of specific artworks both before and after the museum’s rearrangement. In contrast to previous mobile eye tracking (MET) studies in museums, this study benefits from the comparison of two realistic display conditions (without any research interference), an unconstrained study design (working with regular museum visitors), and a large data sample (comprising 259 participants). We employed a mixed-method approach that combined mobile eye tracking, subjective mapping (a drawing task in conjunction with an open interview), and a questionnaire in order to relate gaze patterns to processes of meaning-making. Our results show that the new display made a difference in that it 1) generally increased the viewing times of the artworks; 2) clearly extended the reading times of labels; and 3) deepened visitors’ engagement with the artworks in their exhibition reflections. In contrast, interest in specific artworks and art form preferences proved to be robust and independent of presentation modes
