    Gas chromatography-Mass spectrometry analysis of bioactive compounds in chloroform extract of Psoralea corylifolia L.

    Psoralea corylifolia is the most important medicinal plant which has various secondary metabolites and its leaves are broadly used in many sectors due to its antimicrobial activity. This study aimed to find the bio-active compounds of chloroform extract of P. corylifolia leaves using Perkin-Elmer Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The results of GC-MS compounds in the chloroform extract was appropriate to the database of National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). GC-MS analysis of chloroform extract of P. corylifolia leaves reveal the presence of bioactive compounds as Hexadecanoic acid, 3-hydroxy-, methyl ester , Hydroxylamine, O-decyl- , 2,4-Di-tert-butylphenol ) Cubenol , Neophytadiene , Phytol , Linoleic acid ethyl esterand 9,12,15-Octadecatrienoic acid, ethyl ester, (Z,Z,Z)- ) . These bio-active compounds are mainly responsible for various biological activities. Hence, this study will make a good way for the production of various products for curing various disease-causing pathogens by using P. corylifolia leaves

    Diabetes is a metabolic disorder and global health issue. It arises because of an absolute or relative insulin deficiency that causes hyperglycemia. The study aimed to assess the antihyperglycemic, hepatoprotective, and renal protective effects of ethanolic fruit extract of Moringa oleifera, on alloxan-induced diabetic mice. Four mice were assigned to each group.  Alloxan was injected at the dose of 10mg/kg/body weight intraperitoneally to make the diabetic model in mice. Control and diabetic control mice received drinking water as a placebo, while the diabetic model mice group was administered with ethanolic extract of moringa fruit at the dose of 150mg/kg/bodyweight for 12 weeks. After that, animals were sacrificed, and their blood and tissue samples were collected for biochemical and histopathological examination. The glucose level markedly (p<0.0001) increased many folds in Group I (80.73± 1.24 to 221.5±13.4) and Group II (80.73 ± 1.24 from to 221.9±6.88). The level of insulin markedly (P< 0.0001) decreased in both groups (6.8±0.42 to1.378±0.19) and (6.8±0.42 to1.138±0.08) respectively. Serum hepatic and renal marker enzymes increased in the diabetic group of mice. Glucose level was meaningfully (p<0.0001) decreased in the M. oleifera administered group while serum insulin level significantly (p<0.0001) increased. The level of liver marker enzyme and renal marker also decreased as compared to the diabetic control group. Histopathological study revealed that alloxan treatment caused damage to the liver, kidney, and pancreatic tissues while the M. oleifera administered group exhibited significant improvement in the architecture of the liver, kidney, and pancreas. Hence, M. oleifera has great potential to rejuvenate the damaged tissue and consequently can restore all the serum enzymatic and hormonal parameters

    Utilizing neural networks for image downscaling and water quality monitoring

    Remotely sensed images are becoming highly required for various applications, especially those related to natural resource management. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data has the advantages of its high spectral and temporal resolutions but remains inadequate in providing the required high spatial resolution. On the other hand, Sentinel-2 is more advantageous in spatial and temporal resolution but lacks a solid historical database. In this study, four MODIS bands in the visible and near-infrared spectral regions of the electromagnetic spectrum and their matching Sentinel-2 bands were used to monitor the turbidity in Lake Nasser, Egypt. The MODIS data were downscaled to Sentinel-2, which enhanced its spatial resolution from 250 and 500m to 10m.Furthermore, it provided a historical database that was used to monitor the changes in lake turbidity. Spatial approach based on neural networks was presented to downscale MODIS bands to the spatial resolution of the Sentinel-2 bands. The correlation coefficient between the predicted and actual images exceeded 0.70 for the four bands. Applying this approach, the downscaled MODIS images were developed and the neural networks were further employed to these images to develop a model for predicting the turbidity in the lake. The correlation coefficient between the predicted and actual measurements reached 0.83. The study suggests neural networks as a comparatively simplified and accurate method for image downscaling compared to other methods. It also demonstrated the possibility of utilizing neural networks to accurately predict lake water quality parameters such as turbidity from remote sensing data compared to statistical methods

    Statistical analysis of long-term rainfall trends in Cherrapunji, Meghalaya, India

    Rainfall is the key climatic variable that governs the regional hydrologic cycle and availability of water resources. Rainfall trend analysis in a localized watershed can improve many aspects of water resource management not only to the catchment itself but also to some of the related other catchments. The trend analysis of monthly rainfall data over Cherrapunji of Meghalaya in India for the period 1872-2007 has been carried out in this work. While the magnitude of the trend in the time series has been determined using Sen\u27s estimator, the significance of the trend in monthly rainfall series has been tested using Mann-Kendall test. During the time span 1872-2007, an increasing trend has been found in the monthly rainfall for the months July, October and November, and a decreasing trend has been found in the monthly rainfall for the months February to June, August and September. On the other hand, it was found that none of Mann-Kendall Z values was significant at 5% level of significance. Therefore, from Mann-Kendall Z test, it can be concluded that there is no trend in any month in monthly rainfall for the station Cherrapunji. For the better assessment of the temporal variation in monthly rainfall trend, whole period was divided into two halves, 1872-1939 and 1940-2007. Then, trend magnitude through Sen\u27s estimator and Mann-Kendall Z for test of significance were determined for these two time periods separately. The analysis of trends of monthly rainfall in these two halves showed large variability in the magnitude and direction of the trend in various months from one half to another. Accurate prediction of trends in monthly rainfall is an important aspect of climate research and we believe that present study could provide a scope to correlate between current rainfall trend and climate change scenario of the study area

    Host range of Phellinus sensu lato in India: An overview

    Phellinus Quel. is a member of family Hymenochaetaceae of the order Hymenochaetales. This genus comprises wood-inhabiting, saprophytic and parasitic species. Species of Phellinus sensu lato are known to have large host range and cause white rot of various types to live standing or dead trees from all over the world. The current study is based on a thorough study of literature to document the host range of Phellinus species from India. The study indicated that one hundred and seventy four plant species from 51 families are found to be infected by Phellinus species. The families found to be the most affected are Fabaceae, Combretaceae, Meliaceae, Dipterocarpaceae, Anacardiaceae, Myrtaceae, Meliaceae, Lauraceae, Fagaceae, Rosaceae.  Many plant (tree) species are affected by Phellinus; this establishes it as a potential pathogen and wood decay fungi. The present study also reports Phellinus from almost all over India and every climatic zones. This indicated the high tolerance and acclimatization of Phellinus towards diverse climatic conditions. The most affected host is Artocarpus followed by Terminalia and Acacia. Although the study reports Phellinus from diverse climatic zones of India, the most affected families and genera are from moist tropical conditions. This indicates that Phellinus has vigorous activity in warm and moist areas and affects diverse plant/tree species in these areas like Maharashtra and Kerala. The states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telengana, Union Territories, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland are still left to be explored. The present study has key significance in biodiversity, medicinal as well as the pathogenic study of Phellinus. It provides an overall host range of genus Phellinus, confirming its vast host diversity. The information could further be used in disease, biodiversity and plant pathological assessments

    Suitability of three different cereal grains for spawn development and their impact on the growth and yield of Macrocybe gigantea (Massee) Pegler & Lod.

    Mushroom cultivation is an economical biotechnological process for the conversion of various unused lignocellulosic wastes into protein rich food. The present study was conducted to assess the suitability of three different cereal grains viz., bajra (Pennisetum glaucum L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)  and maize (Zea mays L.) for spawn production of Macrocybe gigantea  (Massee) Pegler & Lod. and further its cultivation on two agrowastes (wheat straw and paddy straw) for assessing biological efficacy. It was observed that among the three cereal grains tested, bajra grains took significantly (P?0.05) less time for spawn development. Moreover, a minimum period of spawn run (16.3 days), highest sporophore yield (343.6g/500g of dry substrate) and biological efficiency (68.7%) were also recorded from substrate bags inoculated with bajra grain spawn. These results suggest the use of bajra grain spawn for quick and successful cultivation of M. gigantea

    Biochemical basis of systemic acquired resistance induced by different Systemic Acquired Resistance (SAR) elicitors in Brassica cultivars challenge inoculated with downy mildew pathogen

    In India, Brassica is attacked by many bacterial, fungal and viral pathogens causing various diseases among which, downy mildew caused by Hyaloperonospora brassicae, an oomycete is the most severe one.  The present investigation was conducted to reduce fungicide load on Brassica by testing an alternate method of disease control.  Different Systemic Acquired Resistance (SAR) compounds were tested as foliar sprays like Salicylic acid, Jasmonic acid and Bion (Benzothiadiazole-BTH) for inducing resistance in different genotypes of Raya (Brassica juncea) against downy mildew pathogen. Protein content in plants ranged between 43.5 to 57.7 mg/g fresh weight compared to 37.2 mg/g fresh weight in control. Induction of proteins and defense related enzymes was systemic in nature. The SAR compounds also surged the levels of defense related proteins, i.e. Polyphenol oxidase (PPO), Phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) and pathogenesis related Pr- proteins i.e. ?-1,3 glucanase, Peroxidase (POD),  from 21 to 130 per cent indicating induction of resistance. Protein profiling of treated Brassica plants was also done electrophoreticaly, which further confirmed the induction of pathogenesis-related proteins ranging from 15- 75 kDa along with some other proteins. Salicylic acid @ 500µM showed best results with 71.27 per cent disease control followed by Jasmonic acid with 69.6 per cent; whereas both, Bion and ?eta amino butyric acid gave almost 63 per cent disease control as compared to control plants. Integration of disease tolerance in Brassica varieties/genotypes combined with prophylactic spray of salicylic acid proved to be very economical for managing downy mildew disease

    Molecular characterization of Nocardiopsis species from Didwana dry salt lake of Rajasthan, India

    The genus Nocardiopsis is well known to produce secondary metabolites especially antibacterial bioactive compound. Isolation and characterization of bioactive compounds producing novel isolates from unusual habitats are crucial. The present study was aimed to explore Didwana dry salt lake of Rajasthan state in India for the isolation and characterization of actinomycetes. The isolated actinomycetes isolates were characterized based on culture characteristics, biochemical tests and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that all the five isolates inhabiting soil of the said dry salt lake of Didwana, Rajasthan belonged to four species of Nocardiopsis viz., N. synnemataformans, N. potens, N. prasina and N. dassonvillei subsp. albirubida. The molecular identification based on 16S rRNA gene sequences was found accurate and robust. The phylogram generated through multiple sequence alignment of all the test isolates of Nocardiopsis revealed that the isolates aroused from a single branch and validated monophyletic association. The present study is the first report of exploring Nocardiopsis isolates from the dry salt lake. These characterized Nocardiopsis isolates isolated from Didwana dry salt lake habitat are novel stains and can be of significance in the detection and utilization of novel bioactive compounds

    Plant diversity assessment of selected forest sites of Gaya district of Bihar, India

    Regular inventorization and monitoring of biodiversity is paramount for its conservation and sustainable utilization.  Gaya district of the Bihar is endowed with rich biodiversity. For proper understanding of plant diversity, quantitative status of the vegetation is essentially required. The aim of the study was to assess different forest sites of the Gaya district of Bihar in India for their plant diversity. Study was carried out in these randomly selected eleven forest sites (Site I to Site XI). A total of 174 species belonging to 150 genera and58 families(48 Dicotyledons, 7 monocotyledons and 3 pteridophytes) were reported from all eleven study sites.  Five largest families in the area were  Poaceae (22 spp.), Fabaceae (14 spp.), Asteraceae (11 spp.), Rubiaceae (9 spp.) and Acanthaceae (7 spp). Different diversity attributes such as Important Value Index (IVI ), Species richness, Shannon Wiener index, Concentration  of dominance and Evenness for tree, shrub and herb layers  were estimated. For different sites highest IVI values for tree, shrubby and herbaceous layers were reported.Shannon wiener Index values for tree, shrubby and herbaceous layer of Nagobar site were estimated3.376, 1.986 and 2.350 respectively. Tree diversity was highest at Nagobar site whereas shrub and herb diversity was also reasonably better than most of the sites. Hence, it was revealed from the study that Nagobar site was most diverse site in the Gaya district. Study will be immense use for officials of forest department, researcher, students etc. for carrying out conservation and management work. Similar kind of study should be carried out in different forest sites of the country to get capture the status of the plant diversity for conservation and sustainable utilization.

    Concentration of heavy metals in two fish species (Cynoscion regalis and Pomatomus saltatrix) from an oil drilling area in Western Coast of Ghana and public health risk assessment

    This study assessed heavy metals (Lead (Pb), Nickel (Ni), Iron (Fe), Chromium (Cr), and Cadmium (Cd)) concentration in water (from borehole, hand-dug well and the sea) and fish (Cynoscion regalis and Pomatomus saltatrix species) and possible health risk exposure by the consumption of these fishes. A total of 18 samples of water and samples of two species of fish (C. regalis and P. saltatrix) were collected from Jomoro, Ellembelle and Ahanta West District and analyzed for the concentration of Pb, Ni, Fe, Cr, and Cd using Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS). Results revealed appreciable concentrations of Pb, Ni, and Fe in the fish muscle and Ni, Cr, and Fe in water. Cadmium and Cr were not detected in the fish samples. Heavy metals in fish increased in the order Pb < Ni < Fe. The Estimated Daily Intake of fish value for adult ranged 1.88 x 10-3 to 2.03 x 10-1 (mg/kg bw/day), however, those for children were 4.40 x 10-3 to 4.74 x 10-1(mg/kg bw/day). For health risk assessment, the Total Targeted Hazard Quotient for adults was < 1; however, those for children were >1 for C. regalis but less than 1 (< 1) for P. saltatrix meaning children who consume C. regalis are exposed to health risk in their life time. The results confirmed that contaminated environments could result in bioaccumulation of metal pollutants in fish\u27s muscle, which poses a health risk to humans when consumed. Awareness and education of the general public on the threshold of heavy metals in fish and water are crucial to safeguard against health risks
