    Evaluation of Spatio-temporal dynamics in agriculture in arid and semiarid region of Rajasthan, India-A statistical approach

    The aridity of the arid and semiarid  region of Rajasthan, India is considered  as a great challenge for the growth of the crops due to lack of precipitation and high range of temperature. The present study focused on evaluating agricultural dynamics of the arid and semi-arid region of Rajasthan for the period of 2008-09 and 2021-22. The study comprised seven districts of Rajasthan: Barmer, Bikaner, Churu, Ganganagar, Hanumangarh, Jaisalmer and Jodhpur. Indices like crop combinations, crop diversity and agricultural efficiency of crops were taken into consideration. Hanumangarh showed 8 crop combinations to 4 from past to recent years viz. Bajra (Pennisetum glaucum), Guar seed (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba), Kharif pulses (Without Arhar) and Moth (Vigna aconitifolia), while in Jaisalmer, it was 3 crop combinations in the past while it is 6 in the recent years viz. Bajra, Guar seed , Moth , Mustard (Brassica), Mung (Vigna radiata) and Groundnut(Arachis hypogaea). A small percentage of Seasamum (Sesamum indicum) and  Cotton (LINT)(Gossypium) was in the past previous years, but now, it is almost negligible. Wheat (Triticum) was observed in a lower to moderate percentage share throughout the period. There was no change in the dominant crops except in Ganganagar and Churu district. All the districts had higher crop diversification in recent years except Barmer. The result of agricultural efficiency showed that Ganganagar, Jodhpur, Hanumangarh had higher agricultural efficiency (> 100), while Barmer had the least value (< 50).     Monitoring vegetation dynamics using multi-temporal Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) images of Tamil Nadu

    Vegetation indices serve as an essential tool in monitoring variations in vegetation. The vegetation indices used often, viz., normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and enhanced vegetation index (EVI) were computed from MODIS vegetation index products. The present study aimed to monitor vegetation\u27s seasonal dynamics by using time series NDVI and EVI indices in Tamil Nadu from 2011 to 2021. Two products characterize the global range of vegetation states and processes more effectively. The data sources were processed and the values of NDVI and EVI were extracted using ArcGIS software. There was a significant difference in vegetation intensity and status of vegetation over time, with NDVI having a larger value than EVI, indicating that biomass intensity varies over time in Tamil Nadu. Among the land cover classes, the deciduous forest showed the highest mean values for NDVI (0.83) and EVI (0.38), followed by cropland mean values of NDVI (0.71) and EVI (0.31) and the lowest NDVI (0.68) and EVI (0.29) was recorded in the scrubland. The study demonstrated that vegetation indices extracted from MODIS offered valuable information on vegetation status and condition at a short temporal time period

    The Drying kinetics of Cissus quadrangularis dried in a Fluidized bed dryer

    Cissus quadrangularis is an extensively utilized medicinal plant in India which has numerous health benefits. Hence, the drying kinetics of Cissus was studied using fluidized bed dryer to identify suitable drying conditions and to understand moisture removal and its connection to process variables.  The present research aimed to determine a suitable drying model of fluidized bed drying of Cissus quadrangularis Linn., determine the effective moisture diffusivity of the drying process and the activation energy, and investigate the effects of temperatures on the drying kinetics of Cissus. The drying experiments were conducted at three different air temperatures (40, 50 and 60 ºC), bed thickness of 5 cm, constant air velocity of 8 m/s and 0.5-1 cm length Cissus samples. The experimental drying data was fit into thirteen thin layer models and the best model describing the drying of Cissus was selected based on the correlation coefficient (R), root mean square error (RMSE), and reduced chi-square (χ2).  The drying process occurred in a falling rate period for all the drying air temperatures and a constant rate period was not observed. Among all the thirteen models tested, approximation of diffusion was found to explain the thin layer drying behavior of C. quadrangularis accurately. The effective moisture diffusivity for Cissus was in the range of 1.54 - 3.12x 10-10 m2/s  and the activation energy was 30.76 kJ/ mole, respectively.  Hence, fluidized bed drying is more effective for convective drying of Cissus and the drying models are useful for selecting the best operational condition for fluidized bed dryer and design of an equipment

    Acinetobacter baumannii producing ESBLs and carbapenemases in the Intensive Care Units developing fosfomycin and colistin resistance

    Acinetobacter baumannii is responsible for causing difficult-to-treat healthcare-associated infections globally, owing to its resistance to antibiotics. The intensive care unit (ICU) settings mediate spread of multidrug resistance (MDR) strains. This research aimed to evaluate non-susceptible colistin and fosfomycin A. baumannii, harboring extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) and carbapenemases in ICU setting. During the period of 2019-2021, this study obtained 200 A. baumanni isolates out of 1410 burns samples from an ICU setting. The antibiotic sensitivity, ESBLs and carbapenemase production were determined using clinical and laboratory standards institute (CLSI) 2020. The colistin (mcr-1 and mcr-2) and fosfomycin (fosA3) resistance genes was amplified. The highest resistance was to ceftazidime (98%), cefepime (86%), tetracycline (84%), levofloxacin (78%) and piperacillin-tazobactam (76%), while the highest sensitivity was to meropenem (63%) and tigecycline (62%). ESBL production was determined in 94% and carbapenemases were observed in 54% of A. baumannii. Four isolates (2%) were found to carry the mcr-1 gene, and three isolates (1.5%) were found to carry the mcr-2 gene. Moreover, the fosA3 was not detected in the isolates. This study showed that MDR A. baumannii was high in ICU settings. The spread of antibiotics considered the last line of defense against infections is a concern that necessitates surveillance and control measures

    Comparing the influence of natural farming on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) yield and economics with integrated and organic farming

    Cotton, a vital global cash crop, influences the economy and sustainability. Natural farming is a cost-effective, eco-friendly method. This study examines Natural Farming\u27s effects on cotton yield and the economics of cotton compared to Integrated and organic farming. Field experiments were conducted during 2021-22 and 2022-23 at Tamil Nadu Agricultural College, Coimbatore. The experiment consisted of eight treatments, laid out in Randomized Block Design and replicated thrice. The treatments consist of control (T1), various Indian Natural farming practices including Beejamirit as a seed treatment, Ghanajeevamirit as basal, Jeevamirit with irrigation water, crop residue mulch, intercroping with pulses (T2 to T5), Organic farming practices (T6), Integrated crop management (ICM) practices with organic pest control (T7) and ICM with chemical pest (T8). The results indicated a significant increase in yield components: sympodial branches plant-1 (12.85 and 13.40), number of squares (29.28 and 31.28), bolls plant-1 (10.74 and 11.32), and boll weight (4.30 and 4.38 g) under Integrated Crop Management practices in 2021-22 and 2022-23, respectively. However, organic farming practices, followed by natural farming practices, were at par with integrated crop management. Integrated crop management practices resulted in significantly higher seed cotton yields (2178 and 2232 kg/ha in 2021-22 and 2022-23, respectively) than organic and natural farming practices with a higher cost of cultivation and a gross return. Complete natural farming outperformed organic and integrated farming in cotton, yielding higher net returns and B: C ratios. This approach holds promise for enhancing yield, economic viability and environmental sustainability in cotton cultivation

    Agricultural eco-efficiency and water footprint- A case study of fifteen crops in the Chupaca province of  Peru

    The water footprint is an indicator of the impact of water use from its formation to its final destination. Agricultural eco-efficiency measures the efficient use of resources or materials available for crop production. Water\u27s economic productivity analyses a product\u27s efficient value as per its water supply and commercial value. The present research aimed to determine and relate the water footprint, economic productivity of water and agricultural eco-efficiency of 15 crops in the province of Chupaca - Peru. Georeferencing material was used for the delimitation of agricultural species, CROPWAT 8.0, CLIMWAT8.0, ArcGis 10.5 software, mathematical equations for the water footprint, agricultural eco-efficiency (Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA)) and economic productivity of water. The Total water footprint (TWF) of the fifteen crops was 1718237.01 m3/ton, likewise the BlueWF > GreenWF > GreyWF. In their economic outputs, gross value of production (GVP) > agricultural production (Ag-p) > economic rent agricultural (ERA) was verified. In environmental costs, water consumption that meets the needs of crops (Wc-Ag) > consumption of phytosanitary products (C-fly) > fertilizer consumption (C-fe) was determined. The average Agricultural eco-efficiency (Ag-Eec) and Economic water productivity (Ewp) were 89.8% and 0.046 PEN/m3 respectively. Statistical analysis between Ewp and Ag-Eec was rho = 0.18, t-test = 0.66 < 2.16 (α = 0.05; bilateral), and the correlation indicated that both activities are independent. The environmental costs and economic outputs of agricultural eco-efficiency did not influence the economic value of water.

    Alteration in the histology of gonads and hormone levels of fish Channa punctatus on exposure to 17-α ethynylestradiol

    It has been demonstrated that effluents discharged from sewage treatment facilities allow synthetic estrogens, widely employed in contraceptives and other pharmaceutical applications, to reach the aquatic environment. One of the most biologically active xenoestrogens in the aquatic environment is the synthetic hormone 17-α ethynylestradiol(EE2), raisingreproductive issues in the fish population. The present study chose Channa punctatus fish to study the effects of EE2 on gonad histology and the calculation of estrogen and testosterone levels. The experimental setting was separated into four groups, with Group I as control with 0 ng/L of EE2. The other three groups viz., Group II to IV, had 5 ng/L, 10 ng/L, and 20 ng/L concentrations of EE2, respectively, and samples were obtained after the durations of 7, 14, 21, and 28 days. The findings showed that as 17-α ethynylestradiol concentrations increased, testosterone levels decreased from 10.88±0.24 ng/dL to 4.91±0.24 ng/dL,while estrogen levels increased from 42.7±2.22 pg/mL to 120.18±4.54 pg/mL. The number percentage of primary growth oocytes, previtellogenic oocytes and vitellogenic oocytes in the histology of ovary decreased from 28.45±1.42 to 10.43±0.47; 16.22±0.81 to 3.15±0.16 and 14.81±0.89 to 2.14±0.11 respectively while in testis, the number percentage of spermatogonia, spermatocytes decreased from 21.4±0.86 to 15.1±0.68 and 97.1±3.88 to 54.2±3.25. In contrast, the percentage of mature spermatids increased from 20.8±0.94 to 40.2±2.41. Since synthetic estrogens adversely affect aquatic animals, especially fish, they should be treated properly before releasing them into the aquatic environment.

    Relation between Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) with some biochemical variables in high-risk aborted women in Mosul city, Iraq

    Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), or Kissing Virus, is a member of the Herpes virus that can be a contributory factor for compromised pregnant, high-risk aborted women worldwide. The present study aimed to detect high-risk EBV by the Monospot test for pregnant, high-risk aborted women, to detect immunoglobulin IgM and IgG for EBV using Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique, to distinguish the infections as acute, chronic, or reactivated, and to determination of Enzymes as Aspartate Transaminase (AST), Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and Alanine Transaminase (ALT).A cohort of 91 serum samples were collected from high-risk aborted women (ages 15-45 years) who attended Al-Medina Private Laboratory from February to December 2022.Sera were tested for heterophile antibodies(HA) associated with Infectious Mononucleosis (IM) caused by EBV by Latex Agglutination slide test (IM Quick test) and were tested for IgM and IgG antibodies against EBV-CA in serum using the ELISA kit.Sera from the patients and healthy controls were analyzed for Glutamate-Pyruvate Transaminase (GPT), Glutamic Oxaloacetic Transaminase (GOT), Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH), and Alkaline phosphatase. Compared to healthy controls, the data showed that the late phase with loss and reactivated infection was responsible for 25% of cases and that the acute and late infection cases had a high of 64%. There were significant differences in the level of these hormones;aborted women showed increased levels of serum ALP (70.83) while having a reverse effect with serum ALT (11.7) and AST (25.43). EBV activation was higher in the aborted women. The study would help to determine the role of EBV in the pathogenesis of abortion.

    Assessment of physicochemical characteristics and identification of groundwater quality indicator parameters in Aizawl, Mizoram, Northeast India

    The increase in population and rapid industrial development have resulted in surface water pollution that stresses groundwater resources to ensure sustainable consumption and human well-being. The present study was aimed to assess the physico-chemical characteristics and heavy metal concentration of groundwater in Aizawl city. The study also seeks to determine the indicator parameters of water quality through analysis of variance (ANOVA) and correlation coefficient in relation to physico-chemical properties. The results revealed that all physico-chemical parameters were within the regulatory standards, except turbidity (80.9 NTU) and phosphate (0.6365 mg/L). Trace amounts of Zinc (Zn) and Copper (Cu) were also present; however, Iron (Fe) and Manganese (Mn) slightly exceeded (Fe: 1.162 mg/L; Mn: 0.6892 mg/L) the permissible limit. Statistically, two-way ANOVA revealed that temperature, chloride, total alkalinity (TA), total hardness (TH), calcium, and dissolved oxygen (DO) were significant (p<0.001) both between sites and seasons. Further, TH showed positive and significant correlation with total dissolved solid (TDS) (R2=0.792), chloride (R2=0.52), TA (R2=0.62), calcium (R2=0.88), and Zn (R2=0.61). Conversely, DO demonstrated negative and significant correlation with turbidity (R2=-0.73), chloride (R2=-0.52), phosphates (R2=-0.70), ammonia (R2=-0.81), and Mn (R2=-0.58). These results indicate that the analysis of TH and DO can serve function as proxies for indirectly indicating the presence and concentrations of the other correlated water quality parameters. Thus, TH and DO act as indicator parameters for water quality in holistic groundwater monitoring in Aizawl. The identification of water quality indicator parameters can play a key role in future research for cost-effective, rapid, and seasonal groundwater monitoring to ensure the sustainable management of this resource.

    Analysis of size-composition of endangered Tor putitora in the critical breeding and nursery grounds of the Nayar (Western Himalaya)

    Size composition gives an overall estimate of the prevalent length of individuals in the fish stock and, hence, the stock\u27s health. The present study analyzed the size-composition and population structure of Golden Mahseer, Tor putitora in the river Nayar that form their breeding and nursery grounds. The Nayar is located in the critical stretch of Devpryaag and Rishikesh (Garhwal Himalaya), free of any dam/barrage in the river Ganga. The Nayar basin is undergoing rapid land use changes due to increased mining and fellow land formations. This analysis was based on length frequency analysis data obtained from three sampling stations, S1, S2, and S3, in the Nayar River. The highest length frequency (53.3%) of Mahseer was recorded from the size class ranging between 10-20 cm, like earlier records, while only one individual measuring 121.9cm was procured. The length frequency decreases with increasing size beyond 30cm. In contrast to the past, the present study revealed a comparatively distorted population structure in the Nayar, where the pre-reproductive size groups showed dominance over the reproductive population. The reduced spawning biomass could jeopardize the recruitment of the next generation.
