Successful management of Keratoconjunctivitis in goats in Chennai
Present study was undertaken to study the management of keratoconjunctivitis in five non- descriptive female goats presented to Madras Veterinary College Teaching Hospital, Tamil Nadu with the history of gradual clouding of eyes and partial loss of vision after 15 days from kidding. On clinical examination, the present study observed purulent discharge from eyes and congested conjunctival mucous membrane of goats with other clinical parameters which were normal. Eye examination showed creamy white spot and opacity of corneal opacity with absence of reflexes such as menace, papillary light reflex (PLR) and with partial blindness. Hemato biochemical parameters showed normal values except neutrophilia. Sterile ocular swabs were collected and the organism was identified as Morexella bovis based on their colony morphology and biochemical tests. Based on the Antibiotic sensitivity test (ABST), the affected goats were treated with sensitive antibiotics, eye drops and supportive therapy and the affected goats showed clinical improvement followed by uneventful recovery after one week and prevent further complications such as corneal ulceration and blindness, which in turn affects the economy of the farmer
A comprehensive study on correlation of gastropod diversity with some hydroenvironmental parameters of selected waterbodies of lower Damodar basin, West Bengal, India
Gastropods, an important group of mollusc, inhabitants of sediment-rich bottom zone have evidentiary role in freshwater ecosystem. Their community structure has been influenced by the water and soil quality parameters. Under the scenario of intensive agricultural practice and fast urbanization waterbodies particularly the ponds of lower Damodar basin in Howrah district, West Bengal, India are badly affected by growing pollution load. In current study, three lentic waterbodies i.e Shiberjala pond, Nayachak Wetland and Dhasa Waterbody were chosen to assess the gastropod diversity. Selected physico-chemical parameters including Temperature, Dissolved Oxygen, pH, Free Carbon di oxide, Nitrate and Phosphate of all three waterbodies were determined also. Dhasa Waterbody containing 7 species, exhibited highest species richness. The density and species richness showed spatial variation among study sites. Bellamya bengalensis was the dominant species found at all study sites. Melanoides tuberculata in spite of their absence in Shiberjala pond, appeared to be the second most dominant species. Brotia sp and Bithynia sp was the least abundant species. Gastropod species richness showed significant negative correlation with DO level(r=-0.705, P<0.05).Nitrate level was significantly positively correlated(r=0.474, P<0.05) with gastropod species richness and density. Phosphate level (r=0.33) also positively correlated with gastropod richness.

Effect of varietal performance on growth attributes and yields of lentil varieties under red and lateritic soil of West Bengal
A field experiment was conducted during rabi season of 2013-14 and 2014-15 at Agriculture Farm of Palli Siksha Bhavana (Institute of Agriculture), Visva-Bharati, Sriniketan, West Bengal to find out the varietal performance of different promising entries of lentil on growth attributes and yield. Tendifferent varieties viz. Subrata, Asha, Ranjan, HUL 57, BM 6, BM 7, PL 406, KLS 218, Moitree and PL 6 was studied in a randomized block design (RBD), replicated thrice. Different growth and yield attributes were measured in the experiment to find out the suitable variety of lentil for the red and lateritic soil zone of West Bengal. The lentil variety PL-406 showed maximum growth potentiality among the other varieties just followed by another long duration lentil variety KLS-218. Highest grain yield was obtained from the variety Ranjan (789 kg ha-1 ) followed by the variety PL 406 (785 kg ha-1 ) and KLS 218 (783 kg ha-1 ) respectively. From the result of the present experiment, it can be concluded that the variety PL 406 gave maximum vegetative growth, whereas the variety Ranjan produce maximum yield and found most potential variety among other lentil varieties under red and lateritic soil of West Benga
Biochemical evaluation of dent corn (Zea mays L.) genotypes cultivated under rainfed conditions in the hills of north western Indian Himalayan state of Jammu and Kashmir
The aim of present study was to investigate protein, oil and fatty acid composition in 11 maize (Zea mays) genotypes collected from diverse locations in the hills of north western Indian Himalayan state of Jammu and Kashmir in order to get an idea about the extent of variability in these biochemical traits in the local germplasm. The study revealed significant variation in these quality traits. The protein content among the genotypes ranged from 10.7% to 18.7% while oil content varied between 2.26% and 4.80%. Higher protein content in some of the genotypes especially IC-0617877 (18.7%) and IC-0617880 (17.6%) is noteworthy. The saturated fatty acids of palmitic (C16:0), stearic (C18:0), arachidic (C20:0) and unsaturated fatty acids of oleic (C18:1), linoleic (C18:1) and elaidic (C18:1) were detected and quantified in these genotypes. Considerable variation has been recorded in fatty acid composition; 13.8-33.4% for palmitic acid, 21.5-48.1% for linoleic acid, 19.2-39% for oleic acid, 0.2-2.4% for elaidic acid, 2.5- 8.5% for stearic acid and 0.1-6.6% for arachidic acid. Higher oleic acid content recorded in all the genotypes excepting IC-0617881 is a useful trait. Strikingly, highest oil (4.80%), palmitic acid (33.4%), stearic acid (8.5%) and arachidic acid (6.6%) contents have been recorded in this remarkably cold tolerant genotype with reddish yellow seeds containing moderate protein content of 13.8 %. The appreciable variation in these quality traits could be exploited in breeding programmes for improvement of this crop and opening up new opportunities for its food and industrial end uses
Effect of nitrogen and sulphur nutrition on storage protein quality in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill]
The relative availabilities of nitrogen and sulphur can modulate seed storage protein composition in grain legumes and cereals. Soybean contains two major seed storage proteins, glycinins and ?-conglycinins that account for approximately 70% of total protein and their composition is affected by nitrogen and sulphur supplies. The present study demonstrated the effect of sulphur (Gypsum @ 20 kg S ha-1 ) and recommended a dose of nitrogen (Urea @ 31.25 kg N ha-1 ) alone or in combination on accumulation patterns of various protein fractions and protein quality in soybean seeds under agro-climatic conditions of Punjab. Application of nitrogen or sulphur alone decreased the relative proportion of ?-subunit of purified ?-conglycinin fraction than control. The acidic polypeptides of glycinin fraction of globulin and 11S/7S ratio were increased in all the treatments in comparison to control, and the maximum increase was reported in the combined application of gypsum with the recommended dose of urea. The lower proportion of total 7S, increased acidic polypeptides and improved 11S:7S ratio by combined treatment of nitrogen and sulphur suggests that gypsum @ 20 kg S ha-1 can be beneficial when applied along the recommended nitrogen dose to improve soybean protein quality
Effect of different shading intensities on growth and yield of cherry tomato
Cherry tomato (Solanum lycopersicon var cerasiforme) is small size fruits, with a bright red colour resembling to cherry and becoming popular in the retail chains which are marketed at a premium price. The field experiment was conducted to study the effect of different (35, 50 and 75 per cent) shading intensities on growth and yield (qha-1 ) of cherry tomato. Significantly maximum yield was recorded in 35 per cent shading intensity and genotype Kalash Seeds Product (KSP)-113 (579.44 and 503.88 q ha-1 , respectively). Among the different shading intensities and genotypes, maximum plant height was observed in 75 per cent shading intensity and genotype KSP -113 at 30 days interval (74.70 and 60.95 cm, respectively). The minimum days to 50% flowering of cherry tomato were observed in cherry tomatoes grown under 35 per cent shading intensity (45.00 days) as compared to other shading intensities while minimum days to 50% flowering were observed in genotype KSP-113 (44.00 days). The maximum length of the cluster (9.58 cm), the weight of cluster (27.67 g), number of fruits per cluster (9.42) and number of pickings (11.67) were observed in 35 per cent shading intensities and in genotype KSP-113. The cultivation of KSP-113 genotype under 35 per cent shading intensity was found to be most sustainable for improving growth and yield of cherry tomato during the summer season
Estimates of genetic parameters for grain yield, various yield components and some quality traits in rice (Oryza sativa L.)
A study was conducted during two crop season (Kharif, 2011-12 and 2012-13) for estimating the genetic parameters by involving 10 parents and their 45 F1s in rice crop. The estimates of h2 (overall dominance effects) were positive and significant for days to 50 % flowering (9.11), days to maturity (0.24), plant height (2.95), panicle length1(39), productive tillers per plant (3.22), branches per panicle (5.61), flag leaf area (5.50), 1000-grain weight (0.27), biological yield (7.35) and amylose content (1.03) which indicated dominance of genetic components in F1s crosses. The theoretical value (0.25) of (H2/4H1) for all the traits except kernel length and amylose content indicated the asymmetrical distribution of positive and negative genes in the parents. The proportion of dominant and recessive alleles for panicle length, productive tillers, branches per panicle, 1000 grain weight, biological yield, kernel length and L/B ratio reflected more dominant alleles, whereas for days to 50 % flowering, days to maturity, plant height, grains per panicle, flag leaf area, grain yield, harvest index, kernel breadth, kernel length after cooking, elongation ratio, amylose content and hulling %, reflected more recessive alleles in the parents. The estimates of specific combining ability (SCA) effects revealed that the cross Vallabh Basmati 21 x Pusa 1121 could be an excellent candidate for improving grain yield (1.52**), harvest index (1.86**) and flag leaf area (6.20**) whereas Pusa 1121 x CSR 10 is excellent candidate for panicle length (0.89**) and amylose content (1.54**). The characters showing more than 60 % narrow sense heritability along with positive and significant correlation with each other and also with grain yield could be rewarding for further improvement of yield and quality in rice. Therefore, these parental lines can be used as donors in future by following bi-parental mating and the diallel selective mating system could be the best breeding method in an early segregating generation for improvement in these traits in rice crop
Dyeing of protein fabrics exploring locally available weed plants
In the present study weed plants i.e. Lantana camara, Solanum nigrum, Eupatorium adenophorum, Tridax procumbens, Parthenium histerophorus, Sida acuta, Ipomea cairica, Rumex nepalensis, Eclipta prostrate, Girardinia diversifolia, Erigeron bellidioides, Bidens pilosa and Athatoda vasica available in hilly as well as Tarai regions of Uttarakhand were collected, dried and powdered. The powdered dye materialswere extracted in distilled water. Subsequently dyeing of wool and silk fabrics was carried out. It was found that various plants like E. adenophorum, R. nepalensis and B. pilosa gave acceptable colour on silk and wool fabric. Therefore some weed plants can be used for textile dyeing which will provide a scope for management of weed plants as well as safety of other useful indigenous plant
Evaluation of different wheat cultivars under salinity stress
A field experiment was conducted to study the response of different 11 wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars under saline condition and by applying saline irrigation water during rabi 2016-17 at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sri Muktsar Sahib (Punjab). Experiment site was chosen with high salinity condition (EC=1.87 dS/m) to check the response of particular cultivars in these conditions. The field was only irrigated with tube well water having very high EC (4630 micro mhos/cm). Results showed that the grain yield was recorded higher in KH 65 (5648 kg/ha), KRL 210 (5440 kg/ha), KRL 386 (5290 kg/ha) and DBW 246 (5048 kg/ha) as compared to lower grain yield recorded with KRL 384 (4353 kg/ha), KRL 19 (4423 kg/ha), KRL 370 (4538 kg/ha), DBW 248 (4608 kg/ha),WH 1316 (4838 kg/ha), DBW 247 (4860 kg/ha) and KRL 377 (4895 kg/ha). The experimental site was slightly saline in nature, so the cultivar KH 65, KRL 210, KRL 386 and DBW 246 are very suitable for the area as these were less affected due to salinity. Grain yield among these varieties were higher due higher number of effective tiller per unit area and due to large number of grains per ear. Whereas, KH 65, KRL 377 and KRL 386 also produced significantly higher straw yield from WH 1316, DBW 248, DBW 247, KRL 210, KRL 384, DBW 246, KRL 370 and KRL 19
