    Post Bioremediation Effect on Soil Fertility using Substrate from Livestock Byproduct

    The purpose of this study was to examine data obtained from soil physicochemical properties before and after initiation of bioremediation using liquid manure as a nutrient source. Bioremediation was initiated by stimulating autochthonous microorganisms present in soil rhizosphere while remediation was determined by soil physicochemical status after nutrient amendment. Rhizomes of turmeric were planted in soil treated with liquid manure and control in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Data generated from soil physicochemical parameters both in the laboratory and field were analyzed before and after treatment/cultivation. The study showed that treated soil increased total nitrogen, organic matter, organic carbon, exchangeable potassium, cation exchange capacity (CEC), calcium and exchangeable phosphorus. On the other hand, it decreased soil acidity, pH and exchangeable aluminium. There were no observable differences in magnesium concentration. Soil texture had more sand and a corresponding decline in silt and clay. Findings in this study revealed that soil that benefitted from treatment option is statistically significant at 0.05 p-level

    Solubility of Mn in ZnO Nanocrystallites using Wet Chemical Synthesis

    There is a substantial amount of literature dealing with many aspects of synthesis and characterization of pure and doped binary compounds including Mn-doped ZnO which has been widely studied due to its superb properties as a dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS).Aspects concerning doping limits for these compounds is an important stage in the search for new materials. Samples of Zn1-xMnxO nanocrystal were synthesized at temperatures of 180 °C and 200 °C using wet or liquid phase synthesis method. Dopant concentrations x=0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 per cent were studied. Powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD) patterns of the samples were analyzed with a view to determining the onset of secondary phases and hence the solubility limit of the dopant. The solubility limit for Mn in ZnO samples synthesized at temperature of 200 °C is realized at x <20%. For samples synthesized at temperature of 180 °C, the solubility limit is x <0.5%

    Commodities' Preferences and Determinants of Demand Among University Students in Nigeria

    The study investigates preferences for commodities and determinants of demand among the students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Out of 140 respondents, 91% reveals that they prefer food items to all other items, 87% preferred academic books and other literature, 78% indicates a preference for credit cards, internet data plans, and other mobile subscriptions. Sixty-six percent (66%) disclosed their preference for hairstyles, 64% preferred clothing and foot wares, 63% preferred to save, 61% preferred mobile devices and technologies and 53% preferred medical care services. However, majority of the respondents reveals less preference for jewellery and cosmetics (69%) as well as parties and entertainments (82%). In addition, the study reveals that there are a number of factors that determine a student's demand for commodities. The study found students’ income as a very important determinant, while prices, taste, time and savings were rated as important determinants of demand among university students in Nigeria

    Factors Influencing Students’ Decision Making in Selecting University in Bangladesh

    This study investigates the factors that influence students’ decisions when choosing a university for higher education in Bangladesh. The study was conducted among students of two private universities in the country. A multi-method approach was adopted in collecting and analyzing data. The responses of the 153 participating students to the questionnaire are primarily described using descriptive statistics, e.g., frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, and rankings. Statistical tools like chi-square and ANOVA test are also applied where necessary. Results of the study indicate that the distance of the university from the students’ home plays an influential role in university choice process in the country. It is also found that there is a significant association between the level of education at which students first consider studying university and their choice about the university. Several other factors: university’s location, cost of tuition, availability of scholarship, students’ mother, friend and visits to campus play an influential role in university choice process

This was achieved by reviewing published research articles. Studies have shown that shortage of human and material resources, poor skill mix, absence of mentors and lack of autonomy are some of the contributing factors that may affect midwives’ decision-making

    Antibacterial Activity of Melia azedarach Leaves against Salmonella typhi and Streptococcus pneumoniae

    Antimicrobial drug resistance is increasingly becoming an important global problem.  Among the major causes for concern is drug resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae and Salmonella typhi, which have become resistant to at least one antibiotic.  This challenge has lead scientists to investigate plants as potential sources of antimicrobial agents since they have been used to treat diseases long before the discovery of antibiotics.  In Zimbabwe, typhoid is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity due to poor sanitation and poor treatment regimes.  Traditionalists are using Melia azedarach leaves for the treatment of diarrhea, a typhoid symptom.  Thus, this study focused on validating the use of M. azedarach leaves for medicinal purposes by determining their antibacterial activity against S. pneumoniae and S.typhi, the causative agent of typhoid fever.  Melia azedarach leaf constituents were extracted using ethanol, ethylacetate, hexane, dichloromethane and methanol.  Their antibacterial activities were assessed using the agar disk diffusion, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) assays.  Haemolysis assay was carried out to determine the toxicity of the potent extracts.  The ethanol and hexane extracts showed antibacterial activity against S. typhi whilst dichloromethane and hexane extracts showed antibacterial activity against S. pneumoniae.  Minimum inhibitory concentrations for ethanol and hexane against S. typhi were < 1 µg/ml and 15.6 µg/ml respectively, whilst their minimum bactericidal concentrations were 31.25 µg/ml and 250 µg/ml.  The MICs for dichloromethane and hexane extracts against S. pneumoniae were 31.25 µg/ml and 62.5 µg/ml respectively, whilst their MBCs were 31.25 µg/ml and 125 µg/ml.  The extracts ethanol, hexane and dichloromethane had haemolytic activity of 63 %, 62 % and 59 % respectively.  Therefore, these results validate the use of M. azedarach leaves for medicinal purposes.  However, these leaves may be toxic to human consumption, thus there is need for further investigation on their toxicity in vivo

    Increasing greenhouse effect due to the burning of fossil fuels has stirred the attention of researchers towards cleaner and efficient technologies. Direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC) is one such emerging technology that could generate electricity from solid carbon like coal and biogas in a more efficient and environmental-friendly way. The mechanism involves electrochemical oxidation of carbon to produce energy and highly pure carbon dioxide. Due to higher purity, the produced carbon dioxide can be captured easily to avoid its release in the environment. The carbon dioxide is produced in a gaseous state while the fuel used is in a solid state. Due to different phases, all of the fuel can be recovered from the cell and can be reused, ensuring complete (100%) fuel utilization with no fuel losses. Moreover, DCFC operates at a temperature lower than conventional fuel cells. The electric efficiency of a DCFC is around 80% which is nearly double the efficiency of coal thermal plant. In addition, DCFC produces pure carbon dioxide as compared to the thermal power plant which reduces the cost of CO2 separation and dumping. In different types of DCFCs, molten carbon fuel cell is considered to be superior due to its low operating temperature and high efficiency.     This paper attempts to illuminate the rationale of continuous assessment for competence development in secondary schools in Tanzania. Although, the curriculum for secondary schools in Tanzania has changed from content-based to competency-based, most teachers in secondary schools are still practicing traditional pen-and-pencil continuous assessment which is far from developing competence in students. There is a dire need for revising the assessment procedures, particularly continuous assessment to ensure the attainment of better competence level among students and realisation of high quality education in Tanzania. This paper examines the rationale of continuous assessment for competence development, as well as the challenges of implementing it. This paper recommends capacity building for secondary school teachers on competence-based assessment, so as to enable them to engage in authentic continuous assessment
