Syntax of Hungarian
Syntax of Hungarian aims to present a synthesis of the currently available syntactic knowledge of the Hungarian language, rooted in theory but providing highly detailed descriptions, and intended to be of use to researchers, as well as advanced students of language and linguistics. As research in language leads to extensive changes in our understanding and representations of grammar, the Comprehensive Grammar Resources series intends to present the most current understanding of grammar and syntax as completely as possible in a way that will both speak to modern linguists and serve as a resource for the non-specialist. The current volume discusses the internal make-up as well as the distribution of infinitival constructions. Topics that are covered include complementation and modification. The volume also provides a brief description of other non-finite constructions in Hungarian, such as different types of participle and converbs
Teaching and Transformation in Popular Confucian Literature of the Late Qing
The Taiping Civil War (1851–1864) was one of the most destructive wars in Chinese history, with the death toll estimated between twenty and thirty million. What visions did survivors have for restoring their fractured society once the war ended? Katherine L. Alexander’s Teaching and Transformation in Popular Confucian Literature of the Late Qing approaches these questions through literature by examining the works of evangelical Confucian teacher Yu Zhi (1809-1874), who gave a voice to the zealous side of conservative Confucian reform efforts before, during, and after the Taiping War. His works offer radical visions of a world that could be restored through collective effort and goodness, while also revealing the shifting nature of power and the cracks in Qing society.
Yu’s works complicate the picture of socio-moral reform, particularly the Confucian mission of jiaohua (teaching and transformation). Though he viewed the disasters of the late Qing as the natural consequence of jiaohua’s failure to compete against socially disruptive media, such as vernacular fiction and theatrical productions, he also wanted reformers to engage closely with these genres. Yu became a vocal advocate of teaching with moral vernacular literature that he believed met commoners at their level. He emphasized the hope that by writing, printing, and performing such texts, every member of his audience could be transformed into teachers themselves, restoring society from the bottom up
Las Casas – Max Weber
How can we think about law and rule/domination? The study addresses this question; delving into the philosophical; historical; theological and sociological foundations of the development of modern thinking on law and rule; among other topics. The study reconstructs and compares in an innovative way the understanding of law and rule of Bartolomé de Las Casas (1484-1566) with that of Max Weber (1864-1920). It provides a systematic; multidisciplinary view of the topic. The reader is guided through contemporary issues such as the relationship between legitimacy; ratio and rule or between natural law and positive law
Bioactive Compounds in Foods
Global food production systems are under increasing pressure due to a range of environmental, economic, and societal challenges. Addressing these issues requires forward-thinking strategies and technological innovations within the food sector. This reprint presents a collection of scientific contributions that explore promising approaches to improving food quality, safety, and nutritional value. The studies focus on the identification and application of both established and novel sources of natural bioactive compounds. Emphasis is placed on their potential roles in enhancing food products through innovative processing methods and functional ingredient development. The contributions aim to support the advancement of sustainable and health-oriented food systems by highlighting emerging research trends and practical solutions for the future food formulation
Merchants of Migrant Domestic Labour
This open access book discusses the market logic of recruitment agencies who deploy migrant domestic workers in Southeast Asia. Agencies are involved in all stages of worker migration trajectory – from their selection, to their training, and their management at the destination. The book describes how and why these private actors play such an outsized role in this kind of worker mobility, and examines their relations with employers, workers and state apparatuses. It focuses on agents operating in the largest migrant sending countries (the Philippines and Indonesia) and receiving countries (Malaysia and Singapore) in Southeast Asia. These pioneering migration industries in the region have established practices and norms that have and continue to diffuse to other world regions. This book is of interest to policymakers, practitioners, students and researchers in migration studies, global governance, gender and migration, globalization and development, Southeast Asian studies, and area studies in political science
Co-production of Knowledge in Action
Co-production of actionable knowledge as a development strategy entails working in partnership with different institutions and sharing power so that communities can participate in planning urban futures. From housing, access to land, services and livelihoods, co-production strategies serve to advance collective interventions to improve inhabitation in cities around the world. Over time, experiences of co-production have generated critical insights about the opportunities and limits of such partnership strategies. Co-production of Knowledge in Action engages with this critique from the perspective of practice. It examines how co-production is articulated and deployed in cities such as Lima, Freetown, Kampala, Dar es Salaam and Delhi, and explores ongoing experiences of co-production-inspired action, mapping the different aspirations that inform co-production practices and the impacts on urban communities. While the volume recognises the limitations of co-production, and the ways it can serve to reproduce power structures if emptied of its political, transformatory intent, the authors also seek to understand the emancipatory potential of co-production as an incremental strategy that has the power to transform urban planning practices
Neurotrauma
This Reprint presents eight peer-reviewed studies on the pathophysiology and treatment of neurotrauma. The collection addresses traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries through both mechanistic investigations and clinical applications. Its topics include the following: the effects of subanesthetic ketamine on stress hormones and synaptic density following mild traumatic brain injury; mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes as a potential regenerative therapy; selective COX-2 inhibitors for neuroprotection; monoclonal antibody therapies targeting post-traumatic inflammation; the implementation of artificial intelligence in traumatic brain injury management, along with its associated ethical considerations; diagnostic challenges in traumatic encephalopathy syndrome; cellular mechanisms underlying clinical outcomes in neurotrauma; and neurophysiological evidence that unilateral brachial plexus injuries affect bilateral neural transmission. The research methodologies presented in this Reprint range from rodent models to clinical neurophysiology, encompassing molecular pathways, imaging techniques, biomarker development, and therapeutic strategies. These contributions document current understanding of primary and secondary injury cascades—including inflammation, oxidative stress, and excitotoxicity—while evaluating interventions aimed at neuroprotection and regeneration. The compilation is intended to serve as a useful resource for researchers and clinicians working to improve outcomes for the millions of individuals who are affected annually by neurotrauma
