Le pouvoir des objets
Do objects hold power? How do they contribute to the continually renewed construction of social power relations? As part of the ‘material turn’ in the social sciences, this book takes objects seriously, viewing them as levers to grasp the mechanisms of power and domination that structure societies. It analyses their presence in space and shows that material objects are both operators and indicators of social inequalities. The contributions consider the material dimension of domination. Furthermore, by highlighting neglected, common objects or systems of objects, the texts reveal little-known forms of domination. The objects examined are highly diverse and embedded in different socio-cultural contexts. Bringing them together sheds light on forms of domination that stem from institutions, social distinction logics and territorial appropriation
Edizioni d'autore nell'epoca della stampa tipografica
The first volume of Quaderni di Prassi Ecdotiche della Modernità Letteraria (PEML) aims, as indicated by the very name of the series, to reflect a trajectory of studies, research, and scholarly activity whose roots extend back nearly a decade. The volume Edizioni d’autore primarily represents the outcome of a collective effort that originated with the planning of a seminar series held at the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan (with the support of the Department of Literary, Philological and Linguistic Studies at the University of Milan and the Department of Medieval, Humanistic and Renaissance Studies at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore), within the framework of the Scuola di Alta formazione in Filologia moderna, between spring 2022 and spring 2023. The initiative was coordinated by Stefania Baragetti, Virna Brigatti, and Simona Brambilla—the latter also representing the journal SteFi. Studi di Erudizione e di Filologia Italiana, which, alongside PEML, supported the project.
The contributions on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century authors presented during those seminars were published in PEML issue 7(2022), constituting an initial attempt to reassess the material based on chronological coherence. This guiding principle subsequently inspired a more systematic, diachronic reorganization of the papers presented during the seminar series. As a result, both previously published contributions (revised by their respective authors) and new, unpublished texts are now gathered in this volume. The structure of the index allows readers to trace a historical and conceptual path in which the analysis of ecdotic issues – regardless of where they are situated in the chronology of an author’s activity – serves as a foundational element of the stylistic, aesthetic, and literary identity not only of the individual work and its author, but also of the broader cultural identity of the historical period to which they belong.
Exploring the World of Parasites
The world of parasites is as fascinating as it is intricate, revealing a hidden realm where survival depends on extraordinary adaptations and complex interactions. Parasites, organisms that live on or within a host organism to obtain nutrients, have existed for millions of years, shaping ecosystems and influencing the evolution of their hosts. While often associated with disease, parasites also play vital roles in ecosystems. They help regulate populations of other organisms, contributing to biodiversity. For instance, parasitic infections can prevent dominant species from overwhelming others, thus maintaining balance within communities. However, their impact on human and animal health is significant, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions where parasitic diseases remain a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. The study of parasites, parasitology, has advanced significantly over the years, providing insights into their biology, host interactions, and control methods
Vers une agriculture européenne sans pesticides — Trois scénarios à l'horizon 2050
By 2050, new forms of agriculture without chemical pesticides are possible across Europe. What might they look like, and what would be the consequences of such a transformation? This outlook, produced by a group of European experts, proposes breakthrough strategies for chemical pesticide-free crop protection based on plant immunity, the holobiont of the cultivated plant and biological regulation on a landscape scale. It also explores three food system transition scenarios and trajectories, broken down into four production sectors and regions (Italy, Romania, Finland and France). The authors assess the impact of these scenarios on production, trade, changes in land use and greenhouse gas emissions, for Europe and on a global scale. While it implies a strong commitment from all players in the agri-food chain and the implementation of coherent public policies in the associated areas, this transition is not just a sectoral issue; it is also a societal choice. Aimed at political, administrative and association leaders, this book will also be of interest to students and researchers involved in interdisciplinary approaches to agricultural and food systems, as well as to any citizen keen to find ways of moving away from chemical pesticides

Advances in Coastal Ecology
Most of the world’s human population lives along the coast, where ecosystems are subject to the environmental degrading impacts brought by the increasing use of plastics, loss of coastal buffers from storms like mangrove forests, and decreasing biodiversity from which ecosystem services spring from. In many cases, as the effects of these changes become more widespread, regions lacking basic information, like the knowledge of what animals reside along a coastline, are being threatened. These developments occur on the complex backdrop of natural processes that shape the geological and sedimentary features of the shore. The clash of the timescales of these changes, short for human-mediated impacts and long for geological ones, creates thought-provoking contrasts and gives insight into what the future may hold for coastal ecosystems. This book presents current research exploring solutions, exposing effects, and describing biological and geological coastline features for the first time in understudied regions of the world. It is an essential text for libraries, classrooms where coastal ecology is taught, and the general readership interested in coastal ecosystems
5: Breaking barriers: Assessing Agenda 2030's impact on women entrepreneurship studies
This chapter proposes an integrative review to critique and synthesize the development of women's entrepreneurship research since the implementation of the UN Agenda 2030, identifying future research directions. The review addresses two significant shortcomings: the undervaluation of women's entrepreneurship in achieving sustainable development and the lack of studies on how women entrepreneurs can align with the 17 SDGs. By providing a comprehensive analysis of the current state of research, the chapter aims to enhance understanding of the strategic role of women entrepreneurs in sustainable development.Publishe
Translating Science in the 18th and 19th Centuries
This book explores the role of translation in shaping the knowledge-sharing processes that were and are seminal to scientific endeavour. It considers the mechanisms by which eighteenth- and nineteenth-century European science writing travelled within and beyond its home continent and non- European science was taken up in a colonial context. Using insights from fields of research including book history and textual studies to investigate the paratextual framing, stylistic choices, rhetorical devices, and modes of expression deployed by scientific writers – key to shaping a work’s credibility and its author’s integrity –it argues that translators are central, yet largely overlooked, mediators in this creative process.
Encompassing West Africa, China, the Middle East, India, South America, Europe, and the Ottoman Empire, this volume comprises case studies working with around a dozen different languages to gain a sense of how scientific narratives were evolving both within and across an increasingly global intellectual commons in a key period in the development of the natural sciences, medicine, and technology.
Part of the Science and Technology Studies series, the volume will be indispensable for scholars and researchers of science and technology studies, philosophy of science, translation studies, gender studies, English literature, and philosophy in general
A Relational Approach to NGOs in Global Politics/Beyond Cooperation and Competition
How do nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) create the spaces in which they act, despite all the odds against them? How do NGOs seem to meet the requirements of the moment, often being in the right place at the right time? Why is the sum of NGO activity frequently greater than the parts? These questions cannot be answered simply by looking at NGOs’ organizational attributes or outcomes. To truly grasp the power of NGOs it is necessary to examine how they relate to each other, as well as with states, intergovernmental organizations, businesses, and other actors. This volume argues for more detailed attention to the forms and processes of interactions between NGOs, and a broader conceptualization of NGO–NGO relationships to better understand their power and agency in global politics. It develops core conceptual building blocks—NGOing, a typology of social interactions, and a typology of relational power and its effects—and explores them in empirical studies of NGOs on a range of topics, including legal environmental conflicts, humanitarian assistance, counterterrorism, climate politics, and social and economic rights. The volume makes three main contributions to the literature on NGOs and global politics: it expands the understanding of NGOing; promotes synthetic knowledge about the power of NGO interactions and their effects; and opens up new perspectives on processes of global governing
The Politics of Famine in European History and Memory
This is the first book to bring together groundbreaking scholarship focusing on the various ways in which famines result from political decision-making, and how the threat, occurrence, relief, or memory of famine is instrumentalized as a political and military tool. Contributions to this volume reveal the complexities, variations, and motivations behind the instrumentalization of famine by political actors and regimes, and how the politics of perpetrating hunger and the politics of relieving it have often been intertwined. They also address how famine legacies have been subsequently politicized in public debates, educational practices, and popular media; and how these socially and politically constructed memories and myths, in turn, have shaped broader narratives about hunger and humanitarianism both in history and today. The Politics of Famine in European History and Memory provides a crucial resource for scholars and students from all disciplines interested in the study of famines, as well as those interested in the history of war and troubled pasts more generally
