Electric, Magnetic, and Electromagnetic Fields in Biology and Medicine
No full textElectric, magnetic, and electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are widely used in everyday life, as well as in specific occupational environments and clinical settings. EMF-based technologies employ different parts of the spectrum, from static fields to low- and high-frequency EMFs encompassing millimeter waves and THz.Exposure to these fields raises concerns about the possible effects on human health. On the other hand, biomedical applications of non-ionizing radiation are successfully employed for diagnosis and therapy (e.g., electroporation-based treatments, microwave hyperthermia, transcranial magnetic stimulation, etc.). There is a significant amount of interest in evaluating the associated interaction mechanisms, which are also relevant in fostering the development of new biomedical applications and the optimization of the existing ones.This Special Issue, entitled “Electric, Magnetic, and Electromagnetic Fields in Biology and Medicine: From Mechanisms to Biomedical Applications: 2nd Edition”, includes contributions focusing primarily on the therapeutic and diagnostic applications of EMFs. In vitro, in silico, and human studies are presented where the aim was either to optimize technical aspects of the applications, or to provide insights into biological, biophysical, electrical or electrochemical mechanisms. Overall, these contributions present an overview of the broad spectrum of established and potential applications of electromagnetics in the biomedical field

The Swedish Missionary Society and Sámi Schooling, c. 1835–1920
No full textThis open access book offers a thorough examination of the most important actor in schooling children from the Indigenous Sámi during the nineteenth century, namely the Swedish Missionary Society (SMS). In the late 1830s, the SMS created its first schools for Sámi children and youth in small rural villages in the northern inlands of Sweden. The missionary schools enrolled several thousand children in the approximately eighty-year-period they operated, for many decades being the predominant school for the Sámi. The impulse behind the creation of the SMS came from evangelical movements such as British Methodism, which helped to initiate the Stockholm-based society in 1835, and aided the startup of a school in the Swedish colony of Saint-Barthélemy in the West Indies. The society was supported by private donations, as well as financial aid and supervision from the Swedish Evangelical-Lutheran state church. It kept in operation between five to ten schools and orphanages until the so-called ‘nomadic school’ reform in 1913, when the missionary schools were either shut down, modified to become Swedish primary schools, or subsumed under the new and expanding state-governed nomadic school system. By examining school practice aimed at Sámi pupils in Sweden, this book provides valuable insights into the overall organisation and curriculum of the missionary schools, their ideological driving forces, and their relation to global developments and the ongoing formation of the Swedish primary school system. Such knowledge helps deepen our understanding of the long-term organisation of Sámi education in Sweden, and more broadly within the Nordic countries. Through its analysis, this book seeks to develop the history of missionary education, as well as research into settler colonial and Indigenous schooling
Privacy-Aware Monitoring for Assisted Living
No full textThis open access book provides an interdisciplinary collection of perspectives on the design of privacy-aware audio and video-based monitoring solutions for Active and Assisted Living (AAL). AAL involves leveraging innovative technologies to create supportive and inclusive environments, empowering older, impaired, or frail individuals to live independently and actively participate in society. Bridging technology, law, and ethics, this book explores state-of-the-art approaches for the development of AAL that prioritize user privacy, making it an essential resource for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers in the field. It is the culmination of GoodBrother, a Europe-wide project funded by the COST Association, aimed at enhancing awareness and expertise on the ethical, legal, and privacy issues associated with audio- and video-based monitoring in assisted living contexts. Written by experts from computing, engineering, healthcare, design, law, ethics, and sociology, it provides diverse perspectives into AAL. • Introduces a taxonomy of AAL technologies and applications, providing guidance from data acquisition and processing to interaction and infrastructure of AAL systems. • Describes the core competencies, including machine learning, privacy preservation in audio and video, data security, and security by design. • Presents in-depth reviews and case studies on AAL applications, such as fall detection, gait and frailty recognition, activities of daily living, vital sign monitoring, affective computing, and smart mirrors. • Contains the state of the art and advances in AAL, especially with regards to privacy, ethical, and legal issues, including GDPR, but also the implications of the AI Act and the Cybersecurity Act

Some are gleefully announcing the death of television, others have been less sanguine but insist that television is radically changing underneath our eyes. Several excellent publications have dealt with television’s uncertain condition, but few have taken the specific question of what television’s transformations mean for the discipline of Television Studies as a starting point. The essays collected in this volume aim to fill this void. Two fundamental questions string the various contributions together. First, is television really in crisis or is the present not so extraordinary when revisiting television’s development? Second, should we invent new theoretical concepts or are our old ones still perfectly relevant? No full textThis timely volume engages with one of the most important shifts in recent film studies: the turn away from text-based analysis towards the viewer. Historically, this marks a return to early interest in the effect of film on the audience by psychoanalysts and psychologists, which was overtaken by concern with the ‘effects’ of film, linked to calls for censorship and moral panics rather than to understanding the mental and behavioral world of the spectator. Early cinema history has revealed the diversity of film-viewing habits, while traditional ‘box office’ studies, which treated the audience initially as a homogeneous market, have been replaced by the study of individual consumers and their motivations. Latterly, there has been a marked turn towards more sophisticated economic and sociological analysis of attendance data. And as the film experience fragments across multiple formats, the perceptual and cognitive experience of the individual viewer (who is also an auditor) has become increasingly accessible. With contributions from Gregory Waller, John Sedgwick and Martin Barker, this work spans the spectrum of contemporary audience studies, revealing work being done on local, non-theatrical and live digital transmission audiences, and on the relative attraction of large-scale, domestic and mobile platforms
