Joris Verheijen shows that at the same time as the conservative Bildung philosophy of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Wilhelm von Humboldt, a radical-romantic Bildung emerged, which, according to Georg Forster, Caroline Böhmer and Friedrich Schlegel, called for drastic social changes. Participatory filmmaking and migration
No full textParticipatory Filmmaking (PF) has been seen as a potential methodology in migration and border studies to collect, generate and disseminate knowledge on migration and borders from first-hand experiences. Engaging a group of people in making films according to their sense of what is important provides a safe space for creating empathetic films on migration and sharing them with broad audiences. Mostly labelled as a-critical, the literature on PF is based on crucial components that this methodology should fulfil, such as (a) empowerment and agency, (b) participation and cooperation, and (c) multimodal media literacy and skills. However, specific ethical and methodological challenges arise within the practice when applied to migration and border research. Some recommendations might include procuring safety and reciprocity, using multistage, multilayer, and multimodal informed consent, and including intersectional viewpoints.Publishe

No full textIn diesem Open Access Buch wird in einer Zeit, in der digitale Medien zunehmend an Bedeutung gewinnen, die dynamische Interaktion innerhalb digitaler Praxisgemeinschaften am Beispiel von Let’s Play-Videos auf YouTube untersucht. Die Autorin beleuchtet die sich verändernden Medienwelten und ihre Auswirkungen auf die Sozialisation junger Menschen. Sie zeigt den Zusammenhang zwischen digitalen Spielen und traditionellen Lernformen auf und diskutiert notwendige Anpassungen. Mittels der Grounded Theory Methodology werden zwei kontrastierende Let’s Play-Videos analysiert, wobei der Fokus auf den Praktiken der Let’s Player und der dazugehörigen Community liegt. Ein eigens entwickeltes Kommunikationsebenenmodell beschreibt die interaktiven Beziehungen zwischen Spiel, Let’s Player und Community. Durch die narrative Erschließung bieten Let’s Play-Videos eine eigenständige Erzählperspektive an und bringen so eine neue Form des Erzählens in der digitalen Kultur hervor. Diese Arbeit zeigt auf, dass Let’s Play-Videos ästhetische Phänomene mit gemeinschaftsbildender und identitätsstiftender Funktion sind, die sich mit konventionellen Praktiken des Deutschunterrichts verbinden lassen und somit einen wichtigen sozialen Ort für die Enkulturation in der digitalen Gesellschaft darstellen

Freshwater Inflows to Texas Bays and Estuaries
No full textEstuaries are defined by mixing of river and sea water, thus freshwater inflow is a key driver of estuary ecosystem structure and function. While there is much concern about water quality, there is much less about water quantity. As water is diverted for human use, less is flowing to the coast, which threatens estuary ecosystems. Some jurisdictions are now setting inflow standards, but there is no consensus on how to identify how much freshwater an estuary needs. There is a climatic gradient along the northwestern Gulf of Mexico coast and estuaries vary from hydrologically positive to neutral to negative, and this makes the Texas coast the ideal place to study how ecological processes vary with freshwater inflow. An estuary comparison approach is used in this open access work to examine hydrology, circulation, salinity, nutrients, carbonate, dissolved oxygen, plankton, nekton, benthos, and habitat dynamics and responses across varying hydrological regimes
