Colonial Objects in Early Modern Sweden and Beyond

    No full text
An elaborately crafted and decorated tomahawk from somewhere along the North American east coast: how did it end up in the royal collections in Stockholm in the late seventeenth century? What does it say about the Swedish kingdom's colonial ambitions and desires? What questions does it raise from its present place in a display cabinet in the Museum of Ethnography in Stockholm?,Colonial Objects in Early Modern Sweden and Beyond is about the tomahawk and other objects like it, acquired in colonial contact zones and displayed by Swedish elites in the seventeenth century. Its first part situates the objects in two distinct but related spaces: the expanding space of the colonial world, and the exclusive space of the Kunstkammer. The second part traces the objects' physical and epistemological transfer from the Kunstkammer to the modern museum system. In the final part, colonial objects are considered at the centre of a heated debate over the present state of museums, and their possible futures

This volume contains the Proceedings of the International Workshop entitled (on the basis of Aug. conf. 10, 8, 14) In aula ingenti memoriae meae. Forme di autobiografia nella letteratura tardolatina, which was held in Siena on 13 and 14 June 2024. It was the first step towards the construction of an international network, with a dedicated website, on the general trends of Latin autobiography between IV-VI sec. d.C., with possible references to the centuries before and after. A brief introductory essay is followed by thirteen contributions, written by some of the major specialists of Late Antiquity, which analyze as many case studies related to that complex historical and cultural period

    Japans Migrationsgeschichte

    No full text
Migration and nationalism are two historical phenomena that strongly influence each other. Using selected global historical examples of Japanese migration history – such as Japanese migrants in the USA, Brazil or Korea – since the 1880s, Frank Jacob examines this connection in more detail. He shows how Japanese imperialism and anti-migratory nationalism equally determine the migration experience of those who – and not always voluntarily – set out to start a new life in another country in the context of Japanese and global history at the end of the 19th century. Jacob sheds light on the global connection between migration and nationalism and draws parallels with today's migration policy debates, which are characterized by similar dynamics

    No full text

Chapter “A Related yet Foreign Element”. Schleiermacher Reviews Fichte’s The Destination of Man

    No full text
This essay focuses on a review of Johann G. Fichte’s The Destination of Man, published by Friedrich D.E. Schleiermacher in the journal Athenæum in 1800. The author places the book within the context of the debates on the critical function of reviewing that took place between the Schlegel brothers and the Enlightenment writers of the Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung. Schleiermacher’s Notiz can indeed be seen as a genuine attempt at a mise en abîme: a review of the value of reviewing. Distancing himself from Fichte’s rationalistic approach, and in line with Heinrich Jacobi’s philosophy of religion, Schleiermacher rejects the universal concept of destination in favour of a morality based on the principle of existence (as openness and contact with the infinite). However, unlike the Schlegel brothers, he does not settle for a solipsistic and aestheticizing conception of man. Instead, he presents a theory that focuses on the progressive social formation of the original essence of the individual. The critical act of reviewing is a means of establishing formative relationships (bildende Beziehungen) with others

Unterstützte Kommunikation als Thema einer Organisationskultur

    No full text

    No full text
This open-access book provides basic management knowledge in a concise and structured way. Fundamental aspects of management are described, based on which a model of the enterprise is outlined. This allows readers to find their way around easily, reflect, set new approaches in context, and examine them critically. The practical examples, the interpretation questions, and the short case studies at the end of each chapter facilitate the transition from theory to practice. Sustainability, corporate responsibility, and circular business have been extended for this second edition. Current practical examples have been included (e.g., UBS merger, Rolex, Nestlé, Logitech, Netflix, Ferrero), and company examples have been updated or replaced. In addition, the company model has been adapted, media have been added as stakeholders, and the environmental spheres, according to PESTEL, have been included. The chapter on corporate culture has been extended with additional models which rely on concepts of leadership style. This textbook has been recommended and developed for university courses in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In addition, novice and experienced managers will find new inspiration and practical guidance supported by compelling examples.

    No full text
The here collected contributions relating to the 46th International Conference of the Representation Disciplines Teachers, organized jointly by Sapienza University of Rome, Roma Tre University, and San Raffaele Roma University, aim to offer the scientific community a reflection on the theoretical and methodological aspects related to the concept of èkphrasis, a term that, in the field of representation, concerns descriptive, analogical, and digital activities that generate new knowledge in several areas of application. The Conference aims to place at the center of the discussion an interpretation of the concept of research that, without neglecting an idea of study, protection, and enhancement of environmental and cultural heritage, focuses on the needs of contemporary society and its possible developments, making use of innovative theoretical, methodological, and operational activities, including those characterized by an interdisciplinary approach. According to this interpretation, research can also be seen as a foreshadowing of the definition and testing of experimental proposals aimed at exploring new areas of investigation: this opens up imaginative and utopian perspectives in the relationship between the sciences, the arts, and the disciplines that contribute to common goals, through the experimentation of methods, techniques, and languages for conceiving, prefiguring, designing, and representing
