Chapter L’altro Antonello: sui fondali ritrovati nelle terre del Valdemone
The here collected contributions relating to the 46th International Conference of the Representation Disciplines Teachers, organized jointly by Sapienza University of Rome, Roma Tre University, and San Raffaele Roma University, aim to offer the scientific community a reflection on the theoretical and methodological aspects related to the concept of èkphrasis, a term that, in the field of representation, concerns descriptive, analogical, and digital activities that generate new knowledge in several areas of application. The Conference aims to place at the center of the discussion an interpretation of the concept of research that, without neglecting an idea of study, protection, and enhancement of environmental and cultural heritage, focuses on the needs of contemporary society and its possible developments, making use of innovative theoretical, methodological, and operational activities, including those characterized by an interdisciplinary approach. According to this interpretation, research can also be seen as a foreshadowing of the definition and testing of experimental proposals aimed at exploring new areas of investigation: this opens up imaginative and utopian perspectives in the relationship between the sciences, the arts, and the disciplines that contribute to common goals, through the experimentation of methods, techniques, and languages for conceiving, prefiguring, designing, and representing
Japan and Japonisme
Japan and Japonisme: The Self and the Other in Representations of Japanese Culture explores Japan’s engagement with and responses to Japonisme, and presents new perspectives on the history and enduring influence of Japonisme as a cultural discourse. The term "Japonisme" has come to encapsulate the West’s interests in Japanese arts and culture in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Japonisme contributed to Japan’s global reputation as an artistic nation, but it also produced persistent stereotypes about the Japanese, such as the image of "geisha." This pioneering anthology also demonstrates how Japan has espoused the modern Western fascination with its arts and culture to create and promote its national cultural identity. Japan and Japonisme introduces innovative studies on Japonisme by leading experts in the field, and covers the visual arts, art criticism and exhibitions, fashion, literature, horticulture, and popular culture in France, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States

Sustainable management of tropical forests
Over the last thirty years, more than four hundred million hectares of tropical forest have been destroyed. Alongside this deforestation comes forest degradation, which in some regions of the world, such as the Amazon, affects an area just as large as deforestation. Safeguarding tropical forests has therefore become nothing less than a priority for the survival of humanity. One way forward involves setting aside forests as protected areas, thereby limiting the use of their resources by humans. The other is to manage them sustainably, so that they continue to provide vital goods and services to local communities and society as a whole. Foresters favour this second method, based on the idea that a forest that is valued for the goods and services it provides to populations, the State and society will be protected and conserved. Yet reality on the ground tells a different story. Illegal logging, which is still widespread in many tropical countries, causes significant damage to forest stands, undermining their ability to regenerate and withstand the effects of climate change. Timber harvesting is thus often blamed for a host of ills and widely regarded as the main driver of deforestation. This book does not set out to justify logging. Instead, it offers a clear, factual and accessible account of its true environmental impacts. More importantly, it reveals how timber harvesting, rather than being an enemy, could become a powerful ally in the fight to conserve the world’s tropical rainforests

This volume collects the contributions presented on the occasion of the conference In the Sign of Time: Archaeology through Alterations, Resistances, and Fractures, held in Padua on January 29–30, 2024, and organized by the School of Specialization in Archaeological Heritage of the University of Padua. Now in its second edition, the conference proved to be a valuable opportunity for exchange and dialogue among postgraduate students in Archaeological Heritage from various Italian universities. The structure of the volume reflects that of the two days of the conference: the five sections offer a variety of perspectives useful for exploring the vast and diverse landscape of contemporary archaeology. The decision to publish the proceedings in open access format demonstrates the commitment of the School of Specialization in Archaeological Heritage of the University of Padua to make the results of these study days accessible to everyone, promoting the widest possible dissemination of the research presented, for the benefit of both the scientific community and a non-specialist audienc
