Internationalising Teacher Education
No full textStudents of teacher education need to be prepared for increasingly diverse classrooms. Internationalising their studies is one way to make them aware of the many dimensions of diversity and prepare them for their future lives in the classroom. It is important to expose them to international learning opportunities, to enable mobility abroad and implement international modules into their studies. The DAAD project to internationalise teacher education is conducted with partner universities worldwide. In this volume, members from participating universities present conceptual approaches to the internationalisation of teacher education, examples of good practice as well as results from their research. These shall encourage everyone working in teacher education to shape flexible mobility paths within the student journey

Chapter 1 Journalism in between
No full textFocusing on an oft-neglected geographical region of study, this book critically analyses the state of journalism in the European South and considers challenges that may indicate a profession under duress. Focusing on three Mediterranean media systems, Greece, Cyprus, and Malta, this book summarizes the basic characteristics, threats, and challenges for journalism in the region. The book first examines the “North-South” divide in Europe and the challenges Mediterranean media systems have faced in recent years. It then analyzes points of dispute for journalism, such as press freedom, investigative reporting, corruption, post-crisis economic challenges, and the evolving dilemmas of journalism ethics. The second section of the book looks more closely at the three case studies, using data extracted over a turbulent 20-year timeframe up until 2023. Based on a mixed-methods approach, the study comprises findings of interviews with journalists in the three countries under study and time series analysis of feedback regarding challenges discussed earlier in the book. The book concludes on whether journalism today is indeed under attack and reflects critically on what are the main threats that have emerged in media systems of the Mediterranean region. This book will be of particular interest to scholars and researchers of journalism and media systems in Europe, although also bears implications for anyone studying wider issues of press freedom and journalism practice

The Legal Relationship between Present and Future Generations
No full textThe legal relationship between present and future generations is shaped by the concept of intergenerational equity. This concept and its structures of implementation are still controversial today. The present book examines two connected research questions. First, it analyses the legal contents and structures of the concept of intergenerational equity as of today. In this regard, the book addresses two manifestations of intergenerational equity: a general conception and a specific doctrine of intergenerational equity that both differ in their contents as well as their legally binding character. Furthermore, the operationalisation of the concept is still in progress as far as the respective duty-bearers and potential right-holders as well as means of representation are concerned. In this context, the various attempts and actual forms of representation of future generations in policy-making and international and national judicial proceedings are analysed and categorised. The first part of the book comes to the conclusion that intergenerational equity from a contemporaneous perspective is continuously evolving between lex lata and lex ferenda. Therefore and second, the book examines which legal understanding the present generation would and should base its answer on from an intertemporal law perspective on the legal relationship between the present and the future. Starting from the existing doctrine of intertemporal law, this doctrine cannot be applied par for par to the concept of intergenerational equity due to formal as well as substantial reasons. The inherently intertemporal nature of intergenerational equity as well as the irreversible impacts of most intergenerational violations require a shift of perspective with regard to intergenerational equity. The book establishes a modified doctrine of intertemporal law that is adequately applicable to disputes on intergenerational equity. This is an open access book

Significance and function of land transfer for the practice of lordship of kings, lay lords and ecclesiastics in north-east Scotland in the later Middle Ages‘. This volume tried to offer a modified perspective on the organisation of the political society in late Medieval Scotland, formed through the bottom-up view of regional lordship and its respective sources. Scottish history should not only be told from the perspective of crown, magnates and the sources produced by and for them but bottom-up: There are large enough quantities of mostly underused sources stemming from clerical institutions, nobility and the burghs, which can further enhance our knowledge of the political structure and the socio-economic composition of the kingdom

Wasted Potential
No full textThis open access book examines how food systems reforms can support efforts to achieve SDG 12 by reducing food loss and waste in support of sustainable, safe, and nutritious diets in countries at different points of structural transformation. To achieve responsible production and consumption and support safe and nutritious diets, sustainable food system transformations are needed. Strategies to achieve this transformation focus on increasing production and supply of nutrient-rich foods; efficiently moving food along the value chain to make healthy foods accessible; ensuring that quality diets are affordable; and driving demand for healthy diets via informed food choice. By 2030, the United Nations aims to halve food waste and reduce food loss as part of Sustainable Development Goal target 12.3. Preventing food loss and waste, both in terms of food quantity and food quality, aligns with strategies to promote sustainable diets for all. The authors of this volume approach food loss and waste is in three unique important ways. First, while previous literature on the topic has focused on loss at the retail and consumer stages, this volume uses a food systems lens to examine food loss and waste across the entire range of actors and activities, from production to consumption. This enables an examination of feedback loops between food loss and food security as shifts in food systems occur at different stages of structural transformation. Second, while examining food loss and waste globally, the authors focus particularly on low- and middle-income countries. In doing so, they explore entry points for food loss and waste investment and intervention priorities to deliver healthy diets under different food system contexts. This is in contrast with the existing literature, which primarily uses cases from the U.S. and Europe to examine the phenomenon. Third, this book explores both the quantitative and qualitative dimensions of food loss and waste, using the latest evidence of measurement and prevention across disciplines and across all stages of structural transformation. ‘Wasted Potential provides a rigorous and much needed systems perspective on food loss and waste, expertly bridging the gaps between food security, environmental sustainability, and economic development.
