The open-access book Abdominal Hernia Surgery - Practice, Evidence, and Advances contains seven chapters. It provides an overview of the anatomy of the abdominal wall, including neurovascular bundles. The book also provides a detailed description of ventral hernia defect closure techniques and intraperitoneal onlay mesh placement. Chapter 3 provides a state-of-the-art narrative of an enhanced view of the totally extraperitoneal technique for ventral hernia repair. The fourth chapter methodologically describes parastomal hernia, including its definition, classification, and guidelines for prevention and management. Post-herniorrhaphy pain, a common clinical problem, is the topic of two specialised chapters. Diagnostic and management algorithms for post-herniorrhaphy groin pain will guide surgeons in the event of adverse events associated with the surgical procedure. The last chapter describes the concept of open abdomen management. The original figures and summary tables have undoubtedly enhanced the book’s value. This book is a resource for students, trainees, registered nurses, certified surgeons, and others interested in hernia science

Quarto Rapporto. Criminalità e sicurezza a Napoli. Vite insicure: forme di violenza sulle donne

    No full text
The Fourth Report on “Crime and Security in Naples”, following the previous three editions, proposes in the first section an analysis of the dynamics of crime in metropolitan cities over a long period of about twenty years coinciding with the beginning of the first data archiving that took place on the occasion of the first report and updated to 2023. The broad time period made available to scholars, and more generally to interested readers, offers a particularly valuable comparative analytical reference point on the dynamics of crime in the metropolitan areas of the country. As with previous editions, this Fourth Report also delves into and reflects on a particular crime whose visibility and rootedness have connections that are not only social but also economic and institutional: for this edition, the choice fell on gender violence and particularly that exercised in its various forms on women, a theme that although it has strongly emerged in more recent times represents a phenomenon rooted in time and that is expressed in different and heterogeneous forms, not limited to the family or interpersonal relationships but which affects the various articulations of the public space. Although aware of the difficulty of providing a decisive contribution to the understanding of the phenomenon under study, the Report - replicating an approach also used in previous editions - proposes an analysis methodology that is enriched by the contribution of various experts and that does not ignore either listening to the victims or an analysis of the stories of the perpetrators of the crimes. This Fourth Report concludes a series that has identified in the city of Naples a simple pretext from which to reason about what happens in our country in relation to certain crimes, also to break representative schemes of certain phenomena advanced without adequate support from empirical evidence.

In Europe under the domination of the National Socialist regime, particularly in ghettos, concentration camps, and extermination camps, men and women were confronted with the necessity of making choices under extreme conditions. Several accounts have reached us: a mother had to sacrifice one of her children to allow another to survive; a prisoner who became a “Kapo” was forced to choose which prisoners to protect at the expense of others; a doctor or caregiver had to decide which patients in the infirmary had the best chance of surviving in order to spare them from selection; and so on. Under these extreme conditions, all the values that guided these choices came into conflict – whether related to individual morality, professional ethics, or the logic of collective resistance. In this sense, the choice was both impossible and, at the same time, inevitable and necessary. The specialist in literature on the Jewish genocide, Lawrence L. Langer, coined the term “choiceless choices” in 1980: a non-choice, meaning a choice that is not really a choice. By mobilizing contributions from researchers from different countries and specialists in the history of the camps and testimonial literature, this book offers an interdisciplinary reflection on the question of choice and survival strategies

    Desire, Education and Teaching

    No full text
Exploring the implications of a novel theory of educational desire on the prevailing modes of educational research and theory, this book contextualises the realm of education studies through the challenging philosophies and theories of Lacan, thereby providing a genuinely alternative approach to the study of education. Structured into three main parts, the book provides a discussion of Lacanian ideas within educational research by setting out a description and analysis of how a theory of desire may work in educational settings and practice. Using vignettes and examples to drive the discussion, chapters explore the pivotal aspects of desire, which could be imaginary, symbolic, or real, elucidated by a mapping of discourses and exploring the reluctance of educational studies to engage with themes related to desire and psychoanalysis. Ultimately, the book argues for the need to disrupt the theoretical and practical logics and models that limit teacher practice, such as accountability, visible learning, competencies, pedagogical knowledge, and professional development, and how these can be better understood from a Lacanian perspective. This book will be of use to scholars, researchers, and academics in the fields of the philosophy of education, the theory of education, and teachers and teacher education more broadly. Those specifically interested in Lacanian psychoanalysis and a Lacanian view on how the concept of desire may influence educational research and practice will also find the book of use

This book, titled Advances in Energy Recovery and Efficiency Technologies, presents and covers unique and interesting topics related to advances and innovations in energy recovery and energy efficiency technologies. It is the result of contributions from a number of researchers and experts worldwide. Energy recovery and efficiency technologies and methods aim to decrease energy wasted or unutilized in various energy conversion processes, ultimately reducing the required energy input (fuel) and improving the overall energy efficiency of systems and energy conservation of natural energy resources. These technologies, once efficiently designed and their performances are optimized, will potentially improve the economics and sustainability of systems, as well as reduce their emissions, air pollution, and thermal energy waste discharged to the environment. It is hoped that the book will become a valuable source of information and a basis for extended research for researchers, academicians, policymakers, and practitioners in the area of energy recovery and energy efficiency technologies

    Entre désir et devoir

    No full text

    Vegetation Dynamics

    No full text
Vegetation, in general, and forest systems, in particular, are of primordial importance in providing essential ecosystem goods and services, mitigating greenhouse gas effects, and contributing to landscape restoration. The chapters of this book underscore the importance of conducting both short- and long-term trials, as well as small and large-scale studies, to effectively monitor and assess vegetation’s spatial and temporal variability and dynamics. The book highlights the convenience of proper sampling, modelling, and consideration of species traits and edaphic and climatic conditions for a comprehensive understanding of vegetation dynamics over time and across different environments. This knowledge enables the adaptation and development of management and alternative uses of the goods. Overall, understanding the ecosystems and their variability in space and time contributes to the ecosystems' sustainability, resilience and resistance to disturbances
