De filosofie van Herman Dooyeweerd (1894-1977)

    No full text
Herman Dooyeweerd (1894-1977), a renowned philosopher and legal scholar, has been regarded as one of the most original philosophers the Netherlands has ever produced. In 1935, he published his seminal work, A New Critique of Theoretical Thought, which offers an in-depth analysis of the foundations of culture and science. Dooyeweerd develops a sophisticated and impressive conceptual framework to analyse reality. He demonstrates that every philosophy, all science, and every political ideology is driven by underlying religious or worldview perspectives. The work of Herman Dooyeweerd is currently attracting global interest. From the United States to Korea, from New Zealand to Brazil, and from the Netherlands to South Africa, professionals across various disciplines—philosophers, engineers, politicians, economists, and others—are expanding upon his ideas within their respective fields. At the same time, his work is becoming increasingly relevant as contemporary society displays characteristics reminiscent of those observed in European culture a century ago. De filosofie van Herman Dooyeweerd (1984-1977): Hoopvol, actueel en praktisch introduces his most significant concepts and numerous examples of their contemporary applications

    Recalibrating Stigma

    No full text
Available open access digitally under CC-BY-NC-ND licence. Stigma has long been a central concern for social scientists studying health and illness. Yet, in existing work, stigma often escapes definition and clarification, is treated as universal and constant, and becomes a vague catch-all term for a range of conditions and situations. This book initiates a process of recalibrating the conceptualisation of stigma. The book features original analyses from early- and mid-career scholars focusing on diverse issues, including mental health, racism, sex, HIV, reproduction, obesity, eating disorders, self-harm, exercise, drug use, COVID-19, and disability. This ambitious book offers new perspectives to stimulate and intensify conversations around stigma, and highlights the valuable contributions of sociological approaches to understanding health and illness

The Passion and Miracles of St. Thomas Becket by Benedict of Peterborough

    No full text
The first full English translation of one of the most important sources on Thomas Becket. Benedict of Peterborough's Passion and Miracles of St Thomas Becket puts the reader in Canterbury on the day of one of the most famous murders of all time, when four of King Henry II's knights killed the archbishop inside his cathedral on 29 December 1170. It reveals how a monk thrust into the role of chronicler attempted to understand the earliest cures at Thomas Becket's tomb and the rapid growth of his reputation as a miracle-worker. With its description of Becket's murder and some 275 miracles, all dating to 1171-1173, Benedict's text, which went on to circulate across Europe, is by far our most important source for the beginnings of the cult that would draw hundreds of thousands of medieval pilgrims to Canterbury. This book provides the first full English translation of Benedict's Passion and Miracles from the original Latin. It includes an introduction that assesses the relationship of the Canterbury monks to the archbishop, analyses the story of the murder as told in the Passion, and examines the ways in which Benedict gathered material and constructed the Miracles. The translation is also accompanied by full explanatory notes, while two appendices provide biographical information and a translation of the eighteen stories in the Miracles that are also recounted in a slightly later Canterbury collection. This translation will make Benedict's hugely significant text accessible to a wider audience for the first time. This book is available as Open Access under the Creative Commons license CC BY-NC-ND

Chapter The game is on! – Sports (events) as a driving force for sustainability

    No full text
This state-of-the-art handbook provides a comprehensive review of recent research and academic thought on the relationship between marketing and sustainability. It combines a ‘micro-marketing’ approach considering how to market more sustainable goods and services, with a more critical perspective considering the implications of our marketing systems for the future of the planet and humankind. It also balances a traditional socio-economic perspective on marketing with a physical systems perspective considering how the consequences of our consumption and production systems play out over time and space. Bringing together a range of leading international experts from more than a dozen countries, this unique collection addresses both the environmental side of the sustainability agenda, through topics such as product development, packaging and circular economy initiatives, and its social side through topics such as fair trade marketing, bottom-of-the-pyramid initiatives and marketing ethics. A range of key market contexts are discussed including food, mobility, tourism, luxury consumption and sports along with important developments in the field around social marketing, sustainable lifestyles, new information technologies and the need for better marketing of sustainability. Exploring how marketing can meet the challenge of the transition towards a more sustainable economy and a fairer society, this unique volume will be welcomed by researchers, students and practitioners from a variety of fields including marketing, business ethics, sociology and environmental studies. Bordering social reproduction

    No full text
Bordering social reproduction explores what happens when migrants subject to policies that seek to deny them the means of life nonetheless endeavour to make and sustain meaningful lives. The book provides rich ethnographic insights into the complexities of the everyday lives of mothers and children with insecure migration status who are subject to the United Kingdom’s ‘no recourse to public funds’ policy. This immigration condition prohibits access to housing assistance and most welfare benefits even for the most destitute. Developing innovative theorisations of welfare bordering, this book shows how enforced destitution and debt work alongside detention and deportation as tripartite exclusionary technologies of the racial state. Bordering social reproduction advances the novel concept of weathering to comprehend mothers’ and children’s life-making practices under duress – arguing that these are neither acts of heroic resilience nor solely symptomatic of lives rendered disposable, but indications of the fragilities of repressive migration regimes and, on occasion, the refusal to accept their terms of existence. This engaging book invites us to think carefully about the relationship between welfare states and border regimes, and how we might contest their intertwinement. Making incisive interventions into theoretical discussions around social reproduction, bordering and childhood, the book offers critical contributions in response to contemporary debates about the nature of welfare support and migration

    Returning from Ebb Tide

    No full text
Returning from Ebb Tide highlights the decline in our nation’s commercial maritime capability for a variety of reasons-the peace dividend in the post-Cold War era; elimination of subsidies for the commercial maritime sector during the Ronald W. Reagan administration; and globalization whereby we outsourced our maritime lift requirements to foreign carriers, some of whom may not be friendly to us in times of war. It is one thing to lament the inability of our current maritime industrial base to produce aircraft carriers, warships, icebreakers, and submarines on time and on budget, yet policy makers and commentators often ignore the atrophy of our commercial maritime fleet. This is the fleet that supported the Allies to defeat authoritarian regimes in the First and Second World Wars and ferried hundreds of thousands of troops and millions of pounds of equipment in support of Desert Shield and Desert Storm. This fleet is a shadow of its former self, and this book represents a clarion call to action. Failure to revitalize America’s once-great merchant fleet will spell sure defeat in the next time the United States finds itself fighting a major conflict. We cannot afford to idly observe the status quo in the commercial maritime sector

    Il Rinascimento della novella

    No full text
The twenty essays collected in this volume set to explore the multifarious nature of the fifteenth and sixteenth century Italian novella from different angles. Novella texts are approached with respect to their being either single (spicciolate)or multiple (collections) entities; to the language chosen (Latin, vernacular, dialect); to the alternation of prose and verse. Further relevant aspects examined include the genre’s literary sources and lasting legacy; its place in sixteenth-century genre doctrine; the link with orality; the ambivalent relationship with women’s audiences and the complex characterization of female characters; the ties with other literary genres; the European dissemination and reception

Convivere con il rischio: il Basso Volturno

    No full text
This volume brings together the results of research conducted as part of three degree theses in Architectural and Urban Design, discussed in the academic years 2022/23 and 2023/24, during the five-year single-cycle course (Arc5UE) at the Department of Architecture of the University of Naples Federico II. The research explores the hydrogeological risk of the Volturno River, addressing issues related to sustainable land management in fragile areas. The three theses analyze the social, environmental and economic implications of the phenomenon. The interdisciplinary approach combines hydraulic engineering and architectural and landscape design to develop adaptive strategies that integrate risk into urban planning. The three case studies examined - Castel Volturno, Capua and the Traversa di Ponte Annibale - highlight the potential of urban and environmental regeneration in transforming risks into opportunities for development and enhancement of the territory. The analysis focuses on several recurring flood events in the most critical stretch of the river, known as ‘Basso Volturno’, whose frequency is increasing due to climate change. The aim of the theses is to develop critical reflections on the possibility of coexisting with this phenomenon through targeted safety measures, exploring three different relationships with the river and the territory. The projects address the fragility of the area, and how this can become a reason for change through actions that seek to trigger improvement, starting from what already exists.
