Bridging the Gap: Roma Access to Public Services in Slovakia

    No full text
This book aims to provide a perspective on access to public services in the lives of marginalized Roma in Slovakia. Public services are broadly understood here to include social and employment services, health care, education, amenities such as shops and restaurants, and municipal infrastructure. The research for this book was conducted using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. Data were gathered in three localities in eastern Slovakia through focus groups, individual in-depth interviews, and a questionnaire survey. In this way, the book seeks to offer a comprehensive understanding of the barriers Roma face in accessing public services in everyday life. The data analyzed, summarized, and presented in this book will serve as a valuable source of information for the development of data-driven policies at the local, regional, and national levels, thereby contributing to the broader effort to enhance the social integration of Roma populations in Slovakia.Publishe

    Thefts of Relics in Italy

    No full text
With the emergence of the cult of saints, their remains assumed a central role, becoming sources of miraculous events and healings. According to the accounts of their martyrdom, the bodies were initially removed immediately after death to protect them from destruction by the elements or animals. In the centuries that followed, particularly after the cessation of persecution, the possession of saints’ relics came to signify prestige for a church, monastery, or city. The phenomenon of relic theft (furta sacra) – attested throughout the whole medieval Europe – is therefore closely linked to the need to document and legitimise such thefts, thereby establishing the right of a specific religious or urban community to claim possession of a saint’s remains. Justifications, legitimations, ordeals and supernatural interventions are intricately woven into the narratives of hagiographers across the centuries. This book adopts an interdisciplinary approach to reconstruct the cultural history of relic theft within the specific context of Italy, from Late Antiquity through to the Central Middle Ages

    No full text
According to prevailing opinion, shareholders have no remedies in the case of failure to make a mandatory takeover offer under sec. 35 of the German Securities Acquisition and Takeover Act (WpÜG), as the WpÜG is not considered to serve the purpose of individual protection. However, the WpÜG implements the EU Takeover Directive and must be interpreted in light of ECJ case law, which aims to empower EU citizens to enforce their rights (functional subjectivisation). The conclusion of this treatise, therefore, deviates from the prevailing opinion, asserting that the subjectivisation of the mandatory takeover offer regulation is required under EU law.

The collected media are monolingual Ladin or multilingual (Ladin, Italian, German, English) and refer to both Ladin and language(s) teaching in general (including Ladin). They thus reflect the linguistic context and the multilingual school reality of Ladin

    The Violence of Financial Inclusion

    No full text
Financial inclusion appears as a timely development policy. Ostensibly, providing poor households with access to credit and other financial services contributes to sustainable development and poverty alleviation. Anil Shah reveals the colonial roots of microfinance and how these paved the way for its rise in the present. Drawing on empirical field research, he demonstrates how financial inclusion is the latest incarnation of a class-based mode of dominating and exploiting subaltern classes on the Indian subcontinent through gendered and racialised indebtedness. As such, he offers a vital resource for researchers, students, and policymakers working in the field of development finance
