    Leven voor een leer

    No full text
In September 1945, Anna Terruwe opened a private psychiatric practice in Nijmegen. She soon came into conflict with church authorities over the moral accountability of Catholics suffering from mental health issues. The dispute centred around the competencies of psychiatrists versus priests. In this book, Monteiro examines Terruwe's role in this fundamental conflict within post-war Dutch mental health care. In the 1970s, Terruwe reinvented herself as the discoverer of frustration neurosis, a condition rooted in affective deficits stemming from early childhood. She became a phenomenon, attracting prominent supporters as well as thousands of listeners, readers, and clients. Monteiro delves into Terruwe’s personal life and professional career, with a focus on gender, religion, and professional authority. This book analyses sources that Terruwe deliberately excluded from her personal archive. These documents shed light on Terruwe's relationship with her mentor and collaborator Willem Duynstee, their shared bond with Jesus Christ, and her ambition to position herself as a Catholic psychiatrist in an increasingly secular society

    Religiöse Aneignung bei Jugendlichen

    No full text

An Ethical Literary Criticism of Han Suyin’s Autobiography

    No full text
Han Suyin (1916/1917–2012) became a household name when Love is A Many-Splendored Thing, the Hollywood rendition of her novel won several awards in 1956. The study of Han Suyin went out of fashion for a while, but it has recently been revitalised, especially in Singapore and Malaysia. Kuek pays attention to The Crippled Tree autobiographical series, delineating her two-track narrative of her family saga against the backdrop of 20th century China. Different from the earlier studies on Han Suyin that employed perspectives from postcolonialism, feminism, and new historicism, this book examines Han Suyin’s autobiography through the lens of ethical literary criticism (ELC), paying attention to the ethical lines and knots embedded in her series. Using ELC, an apolitical literary analysis approach, this book uncovers multiple layers of meaning and reveals Han Suyin’s life trajectory which draws attention to China’s difficult path of modernisation in the past century. The insights gleaned from this book shed light on Han Suyin’s life accomplishments in the face of great adversities and challenges. This is a valuable book that will enlighten literary critics on critical approaches to autobiography and those interested in understanding the development of modern China through the words of a proud Chinese-Eurasian writer living in the era

The Foreign Policy of Irregular Migration Governance

    No full text
Irregular migration is one of the most momentous phenomena of the 21st century. While it is a life‑changing process for migrants themselves, it also entails a number of significant challenges for destination countries and their local populations. Consequently, irregular migration is now a heavily debated and polarising issue in most receiving states. However, the multiple perspectives on this phenomenon are rarely assessed together, and states’ role in shaping national and international responses remains understudied, which hinders a comprehensive understanding of irregular migration governance. To address this issue, this innovative book investigates irregular migration by concurrently analysing the viewpoints of migrants, states, and their local populations. To that end, it builds on multidisciplinary insights from international relations, migration studies, political science, and other disciplines, and adopts Italy and Australia as two highly relevant yet rarely compared case studies, with a focus on their migratory foreign policies. In arguing for a multidisciplinary and holistic interpretation of irregular migration, it sheds new light on an influential and permanent feature of our times through key theory, security, and policy implications, as well as with relevant proposals. It also provides an assessment of unfolding trends, novel insights, and potential future outlooks based on the latest data and published research. This book is therefore a valuable resource for academics, migration and security professionals, policymakers, diplomats, journalists, and students

Sendas del hispanismo: márgenes, centros y convergencia

    No full text
It integrates the studies that, from multiple perspectives and disciplines, addressed diverse and current issues of language, literature, history and Hispanic cultures during the XXI Congress of the International Association of Hispanists held in Neuchâtel (Switzerland). In this way, the already secular Swiss Hispanism managed to attract and hold for the first time in its country one of the main and most important forums for interdisciplinary and plural academic dialogue, which brings together the world's Hispanists every three years. At this meeting, the character of the IAI as a traditional open and inclusive forum where all those who make the Hispanic world, so multifaceted and diverse, their object of study or interest, are welcomed and come together, was once again made clear

The Dissemination of Saint George in Early Modern Art

    No full text
Focusing on England, the German-speaking territories and the Italian peninsula, this book examines how Saint George’s image crossed boundaries and was disseminated. Alison Barker attempts to "dissolve" the boundary of the Alps through examination of images of Saint George, the "travelling" saint. She argues that George’s status as chivalric hero and Christian martyr made him uniquely qualified to cross boundaries in this way, especially through the networks of courts and court culture. Her research demonstrates how the highly recognisable iconography of Saint George’s image meant something different, depending on where he was represented and who was looking at him. Through four case studies that examine how he was depicted and viewed across boundaries of space and media, this book charts a multi-layered cultural network, linking different artists and audiences from three regions. Each case study makes a claim about Saint George and how he acts and is used by four sections of society: rulers, artists, corporate groups and the broad masses. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, religious history and Renaissance studies

Chapter 19 Ambivalent Parallels in Registration and Certification of (Live) Birth, Stillbirth, and Miscarriage

    No full text
The Routledge Handbook of Law and Death provides a comprehensive survey of contemporary scholarship on the intersections of law and death in the 21st century. It showcases how socio-legal scholars have contributed to the critical turn in death studies and how the sociology of death has impacted upon the discipline of law. In bringing together prominent academics and emerging experts from a diverse range of disciplines, the Handbook shows how, far from shunning questions of mortality, legal institutions incessantly talk about death. Touching upon the epistemologies and materialities of death, and problems of contested deaths and posthumous harms, the Handbook questions what is distinctive about the disciplinary alignment of law and death, how law regulates and manages death in the everyday, and how thinking with law can enrich our understandings of the presence of death in our lives. In a time when the world is facing global inequalities in living and dying, and legal institutions are increasingly interrogating their relationships to death, this Handbook makes for essential reading for scholars, students, and practitioners in law, humanities, and the social sciences

    Autosociobiography

    No full text
Autosociobiography, a term coined by nobel-prize winner Annie Ernaux, is recognized as a productive literary phenomenon at the intersection of literary representation, social analysis and political commentary. The contributors to this volume trace the global entanglements of autosociobiographical texts, especially the historical, social and transcultural dynamics they discuss, represent and perform. They critically engage with the question of how to expand the scope of autosociobiography beyond its current corpus and class narratives to include other forms of social exclusion and stratification
