Ocean Remote Sensing Based on Radar, Sonar and Optical Techniques
At present, radar, sonar and optical techniques are often applied in ocean remote sensing. Radar is typically used above the ocean’s surface, while sonar and optical technologies are exploited below the surface. Given the increasing application of these three techniques in the field, this reprint mainly focuses on ocean remote sensing based on radar, sonar and optical methods. It discusses a wide range of topics, which can be divided into three groups. The first group includes five papers that primarily explore the direction of arrival (DOA) and radar signal processing. Through this method, rapid and accurate DOA estimation results are provided. The second group, consisting of ten papers, addresses underwater acoustic image and signal processing, which is challenging due to complications in the underwater environment such as bottom reverberation, spatial–temporal structures, noise, and dynamic underwater flow fields, among others. The last group, represented by one paper, concentrates on underwater optical image enhancement and assessment

Chapter A new method of expanding the reconstruction of the occupational structure in Renaissance Florence: A preliminary investigation with insights into the economic impact of political and economic changes
Previous analyses of occupational structures in the urban centres of Western Europe in the late Middle Ages and Early modern times have attempted to estimate the shares of the labourers employed in different sectors using the information reported in the fiscal censuses. These contributions have often had to deal with the unavoidable limitations of the sources, such as their coverage of almost only the male declarants or that only a fraction of those censed declared their profession. As a result, the reconstruction of the occupational structures and the derived analysis of labour mobility based on these sources presented severe coverage limits of the labour force, for a large part of which, usually 40-50% of the active labourers, it was not possible to know the actual profession. We analyse seven fiscal censuses from Florence, ranging from the second half of the 14th century until the mid-15th century, to reconstruct the urban occupational structure among the male declarants. In addition, for a selected sample of neighbourhoods in one of the fiscal documents, we show a possible new method to integrate the existing information to increase the fraction of known occupations among the urban labour force. We show that our proposed method 1) significantly increases the proportion of the labour force with a known occupation and 2) substantially improves the knowledge of the occupational structure compared to the one obtained from the analysis of the sole declared occupations
Cultural Appropriation
From the fashion label Dior being accused of cultural appropriation after using American Indian imagery in an ad campaign for its “Sauvage” fragrance, to the backlash against Kendall Jenner’s afro-esque hairstyle in Vogue, debates about cultural appropriation have reached a fever pitch. In this much-needed analysis of the phenomenon Aurélia Bardon and Jennifer Page step back and ask: when is cultural appropriation wrong and when are we right to criticize it? Their analysis of wrongful cultural appropriation centers on three questions: whether appropriation involves theft; whether it communicates disrespect; and whether it disregards requests made by marginalized groups about their cultural practices. Sometimes, they argue, it is structural injustice rather than individual wrongdoing that is at stake. They examine cultural appropriation’s political dimensions, asking whether the state should be neutral between appropriative and non-appropriative artistic expression. They contrast bans on wrongful cultural appropriation and the state’s using its expressive power as a speaker, spender, and educator to discourage it. They also consider the ethical questions that arise when cultural appropriation debates spur further debates about online shaming and cancel culture. Using cases from music, fashion and the arts, Cultural Appropriation: Wrongs and Rights will be of great interest to students and researchers in philosophy, politics and related subjects, such as race and ethnic studies, sociology, and cultural studies.
The Education Alibi
Education is generally promoted as the key to the future of Africa in global development discourses about the continent. Education’s official story in Africa continues to be one of innocence and public good, yet, since colonial times, education has constituted an area of intense contestation. The Education Alibi asks if it is possible that while claiming to be doing one thing, education has also been doing another in African communities. The concept of the “alibi” shines an interrogative light on institutions’ and actors’ use of education to divert scrutiny from other effects. Through ethnographic research and critical analysis across the continent, this volume focuses on people’s lived experiences to demonstrate how contemporary education systems in fact deepen economic, racialized, gendered, urban-rural, linguistic, religious, and other intranational and international inequalities
STRATEGIC-ORIENTED MANAGEMENT OF THE TRANSPORT INDUSTRY: LOGISTICS APPROACHES, INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS AND MANAGEMENT MODELS
The study covers a range of problems related to risk management, logistics, enterprise relocation, transport infrastructure and sustainable development of transport enterprises, especially in conditions of military threats. It is determined that modern trends in risk management demonstrate significant progress with the expansion of its boundaries by introducing new concepts such as risk management, risk economics, risk engineering, risk administration and risk production. New professional approaches to risk classification are proposed, and the elements of risk content – certainty and uncertainty, taking into account their limiting values – are specified. It is proven that the erroneous perception of complete certainty or complete uncertainty in management processes is a factor that reduces the effectiveness of organizational decisions. The illusion of complete certainty leads to excessive bureaucratization and loss of adaptability, while the idea of complete uncertainty stimulates impulsive, unfounded decisions without proper analysis and forecasting. The elimination of such illusions allows the formation of adaptive management strategies that are able to respond more effectively to changes in the external environment.
To assess the readiness of enterprises for development, a two-component methodological approach is proposed, based on the analysis of investment adequacy and the balance of activity costs. An integral indicator of investment adequacy is determined, which allows assessing the resource capacity of enterprises. The testing of the approach at Ukrainian motor transport enterprises showed a low level of this indicator – a value in the range of 1.2–1.7 with a standard of 3 indicates limited resources for economic development and the dominance of survival strategies instead of development.
An analysis of the transport industry of Ukraine showed a significant deterioration in its indicators due to military aggression. In particular, the number of operating business entities, the volume of products sold and the level of profitability of enterprises decreased. The main problems of the industry are identified: disruption of transport chains, resource shortages, destruction of infrastructure and a decrease in the solvency of the population. In this regard, the need for the implementation of anti-crisis management is substantiated, which involves four consecutive stages: diagnostics of the state of the enterprise, development of an anti-crisis strategy, implementation of stabilization measures and methods and assessment of the effectiveness of these measures. Particular attention is paid to the adaptation of anti-crisis management to the conditions of the war period.
The problems of relocation of high-tech enterprises under martial law are studied. Logistics planning models are proposed that take into account the risks caused by military actions and disruption of transport corridors. The key stages of relocation are identified: selection of a safe location, adaptation of logistics infrastructure, establishment of new supply channels. Particular attention is paid to optimizing the supply of components at the new location of the enterprise, which is an important factor in maintaining competitiveness and sustainability of production.
The study considers the role of transport infrastructure in ensuring regional economic development. It is emphasized that transport facilities can have both positive and negative impacts on the regional economy. On the one hand, they contribute to the development of material flows and business activity, and on the other hand, they can stimulate population outflow and cause uneven development. The introduction of innovative transport infrastructure management mechanisms is proposed to ensure sustainable economic growth of regions.
Particular attention is paid to the sustainable development of passenger transport enterprises. A set of measures is proposed to financially support transport enterprises taking into account the principles of sustainable development. It is shown that investing in the modernization of vehicles, process automation and environmentally friendly technologies will contribute not only to reducing costs, but also to improving the quality of services and minimizing the negative impact on the environment.
An important aspect is the improvement of the route network and optimization of bus schedules. The need for integration of various types of public transport, the use of monitoring and dispatching information systems for prompt adjustment of routes in accordance with changes in demand is identified.
The obtained research results can be used both at the level of individual transport enterprises and for the formation of state transport policy. The proposed approaches will contribute to increasing the stability of the transport system, ensuring the effective functioning of logistics processes and sustainable development of the country's economy in the face of modern challenges.Publishe
