OSCE Insights 2025
OSCE Insights: Leveraging a Broad Mandate 50 years after the signing of the Helsinki Final Act; Russia’s war against Ukraine continues to challenge the OSCE as a vital pillar of European security. However; the papers in this volume of OSCE Insights demonstrate how the OSCE; including the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly; has used its broad mandate to run activities even in the absence of cooperative security. Contributions discuss topics such as the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly's experience in counter-terrorism; the OSCE's efforts to mitigate the risks of climate change; and conflict management options in Ukraine
Restoring Forests and Improving Livelihoods in Nepal
This book presents a comprehensive review of new research and practice-based insights from Nepal’s four decades of community forestry development, delving into when and how community-based management can lead to forest landscape restoration and equitable livelihoods. With over four decades of formal program history, Nepal’s community forestry is a rare case from the Global South showcasing the trajectories and outcomes of a community-based environmental management initiative. It offers historically proven lessons of what it takes to restore degraded forests in a way that empowers local communities to make decisions. The book showcases research and experiential insights of those who became part of Nepal’s community forestry movement from the early years to the current stage. Tracing stories of change from the era of "Himalayan degradation" in the 1970s to the globally hailed success of community forestry in the 2000s, the book demonstrates how the policy, political economy, and changing community dynamics have shaped the everyday practice of community forestry and its contribution to livelihoods and forest restoration. It reveals how small-scale work in the early years evolved into a complex system of community forestry, exposing the challenges associated with social exclusion, resource management, and policy environment. As such, it makes an important contribution to the global knowledge on community-driven forest landscape restoration in the Global South where forest ecosystems are inseparable from the everyday life and livelihoods of local communities. This book will be of great interest to students, scholars, and practitioners working on forest restoration and conservation, community development, environmental policy and planning, and sustainable development more widely

Effects of Early Nutrition on Premature Infants
Malnutrition, both intrauterine and extrauterine, has long been recognized as a significant factor in changes in brain development, leading to delays in the development of children and adolescents. The link between growth and development is well established, and the prevalence of malnutrition is increasing, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This trend is often due to socioeconomic challenges such as inadequate prenatal care, insufficient vaccination, low caloric and protein intake, and prematurity. In developed countries, intrauterine malnutrition is also a concern, primarily due to pregnancy-related issues like assisted fertilization, multiple pregnancies, and pre-eclampsia. Additionally, low intake of essential nutrients necessary for proper brain development affects individuals in both affluent and affected countries. Malnutrition is a pressing global public health issue that exacerbates the gap between poor and rich nations in terms of somatic growth and neurodevelopment. To address this, it is crucial to conduct further research into the consequences and prevention of malnutrition, with a particular focus on its nutritional effects on this vulnerable population
Chapter Social mobility, economic growth and inequality in the late medieval Crown of Aragon (Aragón, Catalonia, Valencia and Mallorca, 13th-15th centuries)
This paper examines social and economic mobility in the Crown of Aragon in the long term. It is divided into three main sections. The first deals with the processes of social mobility linked to both the colonisation of territories taken from the Muslims in the 12th and 13th centuries and the impact of the Black Death and other calamities in the second half of the 14th century. The second section addres¬ses both the shorter-range migrations, especially from the countryside to the city, and the dynamics of social mobility in rural world and urban society. Although related to the latter, we wanted to highlight, as a separate section, the case of the converts from Judaism, as an original and important phenomenon both quantitatively and qualitatively, and for both its success and failure, in the Crown of Aragon and the other Iberian states. Finally, the third section is devoted to some questions of approach and methodology, in particular political (from the lists of families who held public offices in certain cities) and economic (from tax records or wealth registers) ones
The Experience of ‘Defending’ the Doctoral Dissertation
This volume describes, compares, and analyses the experience of ‘defending’ the doctoral dissertation in a final oral examination in universities and traditions in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and beyond. Forming the basis for a comparative study of the different traditions, 11 case study chapters include analysis of the regulatory framework; semi-structured interviews with candidates, examiners, and supervisors; and ethnographic observations of the defence. Cases are drawn from universities in Bulgaria, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Slovenia, the USA, and China. Further chapters analyse comparatively the findings in the case studies and explore crucial themes such as the nature and purpose of the defence, the composition of examining committees, the role of supervisors, and the idea of the defence as ritual and performance. Providing unprecedented levels of detail into a process often perceived as hidden from academic debate, this book will enrich the experience of both new and existing candidates as well as examiners and supervisors, and will be of further interest to researchers, scholars, and postgraduate students working on the study of higher education, international and comparative education, and assessment in higher education
