Air conduction is the primary pathway for hearing sounds and is widely utilized in various hearing devices. In contrast, other forms of sound conduction—such as bone and cartilage conduction—have not been as commonly applied. However, recent advancements in device development have expanded the applications of these alternative conduction methods across various fields. This Special Issue addresses the mechanisms and practical uses of these methods. Since 2017, a new hearing device utilizing cartilage conduction has been developed and released in Japan. It has gained rapid popularity and is now recognized as one of the primary types of hearing device. Reflecting this trend, most of the contributions in this Special Issue focus on cartilage conduction and hearing aids, with studies submitted from various institutions in Japan

    Feature Papers in BioChem

    No full text
Biochemistry, as an interdisciplinary science, is very dynamic, and its boundaries are very hard to define not only because they are constantly changing but also because they are dependent on the specificities of each time period and scientific environments. Nevertheless, understanding life on earth and human health are long-lasting topics in biochemistry. This reprint is based on the Special Issue titled “Feature Papers in BioChem”, which included an editorial, six articles, and four reviews. Among the articles, a wide range of topics were addressed, including our understanding of otolith proteomics in Atlantic cod, juvenile idiopathic arthritis’ impact on long-term fertility due to prolonged exposure to immunosuppressive therapies, the role of tricyclic isoquinoline derivatives as antibacterial agents, the production of aromatic compounds in Pseudomonas putida, hydrogels made with Tilapia fish skin to increase collagen production, and the use of N-Myristoyltransferase inhibitors (NMTi) as a novel antiviral strategy against mammarena viruses. Additionally, the four review papers described the role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of the most common gastrointestinal diseases, the biotechnological production of vanillin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug effects in the elderly population, and the biochemical mechanisms and applications of multiple cysteine-based protein ligases

Morphofunctional Nutritional Assessment in Clinical Practice

    No full text
The diagnosis of malnutrition is difficult because it does not depend only on weight at a given time, but also on its evolution and the underlying pathological situations. Therefore, the clinical use of body composition measurements is essential for adequate assessment of this malnutrition, especially in the evaluation of muscle mass and function. In this context, nutritional assessment can no longer be based on the determination of classical anthropometric measurements. The concept of morphofunctional nutritional assessment postulates that the diagnosis and monitoring of nutritional status must be carried out using techniques and biomarkers that determine the evaluation of intake, anthropometry, body composition, muscle strength, and function that include techniques such as bioelectrical impedance analysis or nutritional ultrasound, and new biological parameters too. This Special Issue aims to show the implementation of this new concept of nutritional evaluation in the management of patients and in clinical research in nutrition

    No full text
The present monograph examines the governance of state–diaspora relations, conceptualising it as a domain of public policy that requires new tools of analysis and design. The research focuses on institutional, legal, and organisational mechanisms through which diasporas are engaged in the political, economic, and cultural life of their countries of origin. The central aim is to demonstrate how different theories of public management, Weberian bureaucracy, governance, stakeholder theory, and the resource-based view can be applied to the evaluation and development of diaspora policies. The research problem is framed by the question of which models of cooperation are most effective under conditions of global mobility and the diversity of diasporas. Methodologically, the study employs institutional and legal analysis, comparative inquiry, and case studies. Selected states, including India, China, Israel, Canada, Ireland, the Philippines, Nigeria, the United States, and Armenia, are examined alongside Poland, which is assessed as a hybrid model that combines classical bureaucratic frameworks with mechanisms inspired by New Public Management. The findings indicate that no single theoretical model operates in isolation. Effective diaspora policies integrate bureaucratic procedures with network-based governance, stakeholder dialogue, and the mobilization of financial, human, and social capital. While countries with large and well-organised diasporas increasingly treat these communities as strategic resources, Poland still underutilises the developmental potential of Polonia despite reforms that introduced project-based funding and participatory elements. The key conclusion is that hybrid approaches to diaspora engagement – combining institutional stability with flexibility and innovation – represent the most promising model. Only through such integration can states maximise the strategic value of their diasporas as partners in development, culture, and diplomacy.
