Kjønn, helse og marginalisering
This anthology explores the intersection between gender, health and marginalization. In recent years, there has been increasing research interest in the connection between gender and health. However, in the Norwegian context, little research has been done on how gender and health are intertwined with cultural and social processes that lead to marginalization and ultimately gender-based inequality in health. On this background, this book provides new insight into topics such as cervical screening, cancer rehabilitation, abortion, substance abuse, domestic violence, chronic illness and dementia care.
The chapters provide nuanced knowledge that can be used to develop better and more gender-sensitive health services where necessary. This can lead to better health and less marginalization for everyone, irrespective of gender. This knowledge can also be important for students in health and social science education. The book is also intended as inspiration for those pursuing master's theses, doctoral dissertations and other research studies, as well as a resource for teachers and practice supervisors within higher education in health and social sciences.
The paper concerns the use of archaeological sources and methods as tools for understanding some specific economic and social developments of the fourteenth century. Since the changes that occurred during this period seem to have had a profound impact on the material condition of people, archaeological sources must certainly be considered as strategic tools. Specifically, the theme of inequalities will be addressed by tackling two central issues in the social analysis of the phenomenon, namely modes of consumption, read through the ceramic source, and the analysis of dietary regimes. On these issues, archaeological sources have great potential, which has recently been enhanced by more frequent and systematic recourse to scientific analysis of the finds
Organoids for Personalised Cancer Medicine
This open access book builds on and updates work performed in the HYBRIDA project, funded by the EU to develop an ethical framework for organoid research. Organoids are three-dimensional stem cell constructs that mimic organs of the body or tumours. Patient-derived organoids are envisioned to be grown from individual patients’ tumours and used to tailor the most effective and safest treatments in a new form of personalized medicine. This text offers a critical assessment of this vision from the perspective of philosophy of medicine. The authors present a tailored “vision assessment”, presented as examples of methodological development, and applied to objects. They first analyse and describe the vision of using organoids for personalized cancer medicine, then critically evaluate this vision and finally comment on ethical implications of the epistemological issues and how to handle them. The authors further draw on sources for empirical inquiries. This book presents an exercise in health technology assessment conducted by philosophers. Its core readership are philosophers of medicine and bioethicists interested in personalized medicine and stem cell research
Estetiske fag i samfunnet
This interdisciplinary anthology positions aesthetics, art and education in schools as a meeting point for critical reflection within society. As the country’s largest social institution, the school constitutes a framework capable of establishing fertile conditions for a reflective process in which the arts and societal development may be understood in relation to one another. The contributions in this volume reflect the diversity of research on arts education within society, engaging with and referencing existing scholarship in the field through various approaches. Central to the inquiry is the question: In what ways might the arts serve as a pedagogical arena where students can articulate resistance and cultivate the courage to engage in critique? The articles collectively underscore that arts education is concerned with fostering constructive and empowered perspectives on a society undergoing rapid transformation. A shared premise across all contributions is the belief that the capacity for independent thought evolves in alignment with students’ creative abilities and exploratory drive
Conservation Methodologies and Practices for Built Heritage
In recent years, numerous advances have been made in the area of conservation methodologies and practices for architectural cultural heritage. The use of innovative technologies and multidisciplinary approaches can be considered valuable tools to support the conservation, fruition, rehabilitation, and valorization of historical–artistic buildings, which are usually subject to protective restrictions and therefore require non-invasive or micro-destructive diagnostic analyses. This reprint collects research articles on architectural heritage conservation, focusing on materials science, diagnostics and monitoring, chemical analysis, intervention, civil and materials engineering, green materials, and the use of innovative digital technologies
Film Serials and the American Cinema, 1910-1940
Before the advent of television, cinema offered serialized films as a source of weekly entertainment. This book traces the history from the days of silent screen heroines to the sound era's daring adventure serials, unearthing a thriving film culture beyond the self-contained feature. Through extensive archival research, Ilka Brasch details the aesthetic appeals of film serials within their context of marketing and exhibition, looking at how they adapted the pleasures of a flourishing crime fiction culture to both serial visual culture and the affordances of the media-modernity of the early 20th century. The study furthermore traces the relationship of film serials to the broadcast models of radio and television and thereby shows how film serials introduced modes of storytelling that informed popular culture even beyond the serial's demise
Gespaltene Bilder
Image or furniture? Sign or object? Renaissance Intarsia cannot be clearly categorized and instead create hallucinatory spaces in which ontological distinctions are impossible. Material; function; production and depiction are inextricably intertwined here and create a visual language unique to the medium. The countless trompe-l'œils question a logic of representation based on imitation and instead expose an excessive; exuberant and rampant mimesis. This study approaches the thoroughly hybrid object of wood marquetry with the help of different disciplinary perspectives and provides a media-materialistic and cultural-techniques-based analysis
Advances in Image Processing, Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Robotics
The aim of this reprint is to give researchers the opportunity to present new tendencies, the latest achievements and research directions, and their current work on important issues in image processing, deep learning, soft computing, sensor fusion, robotic vision, and applied industrial solutions in robotics
Chapter La formazione universitaria al Servizio sociale: dalla Scuola al Diploma alle Lauree
Here we retrace the origins and development of the teaching of Social Work in the context of the “Cesare Alfieri”.The inclusion of Social Work was neither quick nor easy. We will briefly retrace the path that led from the School of Social Work, a private initiative, started after the Second World War, to the Higher School for Special Purposes, in the university environment, up to the university diploma and then to the degrees awarded by the Faculty/School. The restructuring and requalification of Social Work through the regulatory reforms of the last quarter of the century has led to it becoming a strong point both in quantitative and qualitative terms. The commitment of the teaching staff has been aimed at making the most of the traditional interdisciplinary skills of the Faculty to build a solid initial cultural base for future social workers; and on this basis to graft an equally solid professional competence. Until the consolidation of a virtuous circle between academic teachers and social work professionals
Chapter Gli studi internazionali
In the first part, the article deals with the tradition of International history in the corse held at “Cesare Alfieri”. It recalls how International history has been present in the teaching programs at “Cesare Alfieri” since the birth of the Institute and underlines the evolution of the discipline with a focus on the changes occurred after the Second World War. In the second part, the article deals with the institution at “Cesare Alfieri” of both the first Italian course of International relations, in the academic year 1968-1969, and of the first course of Strategic studies, in the academic year 1985-1986. Then the article describes the contribution given by the Florentine School to the development of this field of international studies in Italy
