Arabic text categorization based on Arabic Wikipedia

ACM Transactions on Asian Language Information Processing. Vol. 13, No. 1, Article 4. February 2014This paper describes an algorithm for categorizing Arabic text, relying on highly categorized corpus-based data sets, obtained from the Arabic Wikipedia by using manual and automated processes to build and customize categories. The categorization algorithm was built by adopting a simple categorization idea, then moving forward to more complex one. We applied tests and filtration criteria to end with the best and most efficient results that our algorithm can achieve. The categorization depends on the statistical relation between the input text and the reference (training) data supported by well defined Wikipedia-based categories. Our algorithm supports two levels for categorizing Arabic text; categories are grouped into a hierarchy of main categories and subcategories. This introduces a challenge due to the correlation between certain subcategories and overlap between main categories. We argue that our algorithm achieved good performance compared to other methods reported in the literature

Situation analysis of transboundary wastewater management - The case of Israel / Palestine borders

Environmental problems between countries can have deep historical roots and consequences for several reasons. Most environmental transboundary problems are yet to be resolved.Solutions that were developed responded to the forcesof political, media, and localNon-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), and did not respond to the needs or reality on the ground. This paperfocuses on transboundary wastewater management between Israel and Palestine. Themeasures undertaken by Israel, thestronger party, and the associated effects on solvingthe transboundarypollution issues are presented. Of equal importance, proceduresfollowed by the weaker party,Palestine, to resolve the environmental problems are discussed. The responsibility ofthe donor countries and localNGOsin the conflict is also addressed. Results obtained revealed that the current bi-national agreement does not achieveenvironmental justiceand protection. The stronger party applies stringent standards and guidelines, which go abovethe technicaland financialcapacity of the weaker party to achieve sustainable sanitation facilities within its region. A regional cooperative framework with clear coordination mechanism considering the international experience on transboundary management of wastewater and engagement of NGOs and donor countries is neede

Quality Assessment of General and Categorized Arabic Text Corpora

Many Natural Language Processing and Information Retrieval methods are based on the extensive use of text corpora. The credibility of the results can be heavily influenced by the underlying corpus quality. Much research has been utilizing Arabic corpora into various tasks of Arabic Information Processing. In this paper we discuss a suite of metrics that can be used to ascertain the quality of Arabic corpora. We borrow heavily from the extensive work on corpora quality for other languages and try to adapt some of them for Arabic. We also apply these measures to sample corpora, including categorized corpora and report on the results. The main corpora we experiment with are: a general corpus extracted from newspaper (AlQuds newspaper) articles covering the years 2009 -2012 and a highly categorized (split into 9 major and 25 minor categories) corpus built from Arabic Wikipedia. We employ different filtration methods, discuss and examine different corpora features as quality metrics. The metrics are based on parameters such as character/word N-gram frequencies and Zipf’s law applicability. We also study error rates, vocabulary properties, monolinguality, the effects of normalization, as well as corpora stability with size growth. It is our intention to make our corpora quality assessment tools available online for possible use by other researcher
