Article in : Journal of QOU for Educational and Psychological Research and Studies ; no. 2570Abstract This study investigated the effect of incorporating the summary strategy on developing students’ reading comprehension. The study was implemented in English Communication 141 course (ENGC) at Birzeit University. The quasi-experimental approach was applied and employed one experimental group (EG) consisting of twenty-seven male and female students and another control group (CG) comprised thirty-two students. A reading comprehension pre-test was administered to determine the participants’ level before the intervention. The experimental group received an eight-week treatment using the summary strategy while the regular method was used to teach the control group. Both groups were taught by the researcher herself to control the variables of the study. A post-test was administered to find whether there was any improvement in the groups’ performance. The results revealed that there was statistically significant difference between the two groups in favor of the experimental group. Key words: Reading, reading comprehension, reading strategies, summar

    No full text
Background: Occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) is an authority with limited resources. Therefore, research conducted in such a setting should be prioritized and coordinated to follow a national research agenda. This study aims to produce a research agenda for reproductive health in the oPt that can be utilized by reproductive health stakeholders and contribute to the development of policy-based evidence to guide health practice. Methods: In the current study, we followed research prioritization methods developed by the World Health Organization-Child Health and Nutrition Research Initiative. Research questions were obtained from reproductive health experts in the oPt. The questions were then grouped into thematic areas which were prioritized by the reproductive health experts. Scores were calculated and sorted to define the top priority research areas. Results: A total of 232 research questions were prioritized by 30 reproductive health experts. Health system issues were the most addressed in the top 50 research questions. They included questions on the quality of services and health professionals’ knowledge and continuous professional training. Adolescents’ sexual and reproductive health and gender-based violence were rarely mentioned in the top 50 questions. The number of questions related to safe motherhood was around 50% followed by questions related to health system. Questions related to elderly women and menopause as well as reproductive system cancers were also within the top 50 ranked questions. Conclusions: Priority research areas in reproductive health were identified for the oPt, which should be utilized by researchers with a focus on the high priority areas. Policy makers and funders should coordinate their efforts to ensure the production of research with value to the Palestinian context, in the most efficient way possibl

    Diacritic-Based Matching of Arabic Words

    No full text
Words in Arabic consist of letters and short vowel symbols called diacritics inscribed atop regular letters. Changing diacritics may change the syntax and semantics of a word; turning it into another. This results in difficulties when comparing words based solely on string matching. Typically, Arabic NLP applications resort to morphological analysis to battle ambiguity originating from this and other challenges. In this paper, we introduce three alternative algorithms to compare two words with possibly different diacritics. We propose the Subsume knowledge-based algorithm, the Imply rule-based algorithm, and the Alike machine- learning based algorithm. We evaluated the soundness, completeness and accuracy of the algorithms against a large dataset of 86,886 word pairs. Our evaluation shows that the accuracy of Subsume (100%), Imply (99.32%), and Alike (99.53%). Although accurate, Subsume was able to judge only 75% of the data. Both Subsume and Imply are sound, while Alike is not. We demonstrate the utility of the algorithms using a real-life use case in lemma disambiguation and in linking hundreds of Arabic dictionaries

Modified global flower pollination algorithm and its application for optimization problems

    No full text
Flower Pollination Algorithm (FPA) has increasingly attracted researchers’ attention in the computational intelligence field. This is due to its simplicity and efficiency in searching for global optimality of many optimization problems. However, there is a possibility to enhance its search performance further. This paper aspires to develop a new FPA variant that aims to improve the convergence rate and solution quality, which will be called modified global FPA (mgFPA). The mgFPA is designed to better utilize features of existing solutions through extracting its characteristics, and direct the exploration process towards specific search areas. Several continuous optimization problems were used to investigate the positive impact of the proposed algorithm. The eligibility of mgFPA was also validated on real optimization problems, where it trains artificial neural networks to perform pattern classification

This study focuses on the analysis of essays written by Palestinian learners of A1-A2 level at Birzeit University. It aims to analyze the types of errors committed as well as their sources

Natural treatment systems for reclaimed water use and bioresource recovery : a Palestinian experience

    No full text
Technical workshopPhytotechnologies, waste stabilization ponds (WSPs) and constructed wetlands (CWs), play a key role in stabilization of organic and inorganic matter in domestic, municipal and industrial wastewater during secondary and tertiary treatment. Utilizing solar energy and carbon dioxide, WSPs microalgae produce oxygen for autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria to degrade organic and inorganic pollutants, respectively. Aeration through algal oxygenic photosynthesis reduces annual energy costs compared with mechanical aeration applied in mechanised systems for wastewater treatment. This paper reviews the Palestinian experience in the application of pilot and large-scale algae-based systems for domestic wastewater treatment and reuse. During the years 1997-2002, pilot-plant investigations have been conducted at Birzeit University campus, where oxygenic photosynthesis in algae-based ponds was applied for wastewater treatment. Major basic principles obtained from these pilot studies can be used for the engineering design of biological nutrient processes or performance enhancement of new or existing overloaded oxidation ponds. The chemical, biological, operational, and economic factors that affect the use of engineered algae-based ponds and innovative photobioreactors with algal-bacterial biomass as feasible methods for producing oxygen and biologically safe reclaimed water are presented and discussed. Recent studies reported that algal-based ponds are quite sensitive towards a wide range of industrial discharges entailing hazardous organic and inorganic chemicals. Therefore, innovative design and practical operational procedures are necessary to sustain microbial biomass within the oxidation ponds. Ongoing research studies focus on the application of natural treatment systems (microalgae-based and algal-bacterial processes and constructed wetlands) for the reclamation of anaerobically treated agrifood industrial effluents (olive oil mills, dairy and slaughterhouse facilities). Guidelines for system design, start-up, and operation of pilot algal–bacterial systems and constructed wetlands shall be identified and discussed, where areas for further research are identified. Proper algal system configuration, cultivation and harvesting are crucial engineering design criteria of phytotechnologies pertaining to process sustainability, reclaimed water safety, land cost, and algal biomass use.PADUCO Program, Dutch Foreign Ministry, The Netherland

Octupole deformation in neutron-rich actinides and superheavy nuclei and the role of nodal structure of single-particle wavefunctions in extremely deformed structures of light nuclei

    No full text
Octupole deformed shapes in neutron-rich actinides and superheavy nuclei as well as extremely deformed shapes of the N ~ Z light nuclei have been investigated within the framework of covariant density functional theory. We confirmed the presence of new region of octupole deformation in neutron-rich actinides with the center around Z ~ 96, N ~ 196 but our calculations do not predict octupole deformation in the ground states of superheavy Z> 108 nuclei. As exemplified by the study of 36Ar, the nodal structure of the wavefunction of occupied single-particle orbitals in extremely deformed structures allows to understand the formation of the α-clusters in very light nuclei, the suppression of the α-clusterization with the increase of mass number, the formation of ellipsoidal mean-field type structures and nuclear molecule

The main goal of this paper is to investigate the boundedness, invariant intervals, semi-cycles and global attractivity of all nonnegative solutions of the equation xn+1 = βxn + γ xn−k A + Bxn + C xn−k , n ∈ N0, where the parameters β, γ, A, B and C and the initial conditions x−k , x−k+1,..., x0 are non-negative real numbers, k = {1, 2,...}. We give a detailed description of the semi-cycles of solutions, and determine conditions that satisfy the global asymptotic stability of the equilibrium point
