Unlocking the labor market for Palestinian women
Palestinian women in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT) have one of the lowest female labor force participation rates in the world.the author points out that, while this would be problematic in any context, it is even more so under conditions of settler colonialism, as in the OPT. Among other reasons, women’s labor force participation is a critical development indicator that both developed and developing countries actively strategize to boost, in part because it is one of the drivers of economic growth. Moreover, in many developing countries women’s labor force participation indicates the capacity of a society to withstand economic shocks with minimal social fragmentation. Finally, the higher the women’s participation rate and employment under “decent work” conditions the greater the prevalence of gender justice within that society.
In short, weak economic and social outcomes, including stagnant growth, social fragmentation and gender bias, may undermine the capacity of the colonized population to withstand, survive and resist colonialism. The author builds on her previous work by first describing the features of women’s labor market trends and then examining the factors shaping these trends 1. She concludes with policy recommendations aimed at boosting women’s participation in the labor market in the OPT while at the same time challenging Israel’s efforts to undermine the Palestinian economy

Multi-variable regression models for prediction of discharge and approach velocity coefficients in flow measurement flumes with compound cross-section
Published in : ISH Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, Vol. 21, No. 1,
65–84In this paper, two multi-variable regression models have been developed to predict the discharge and approach
velocity coefficients from relevant independent variables. The regression models are developed based on relevant
experimental data obtained from testing nine different flow measurement long-throated flumes with symmetrical rectangular
compound cross-sections. The long-throated flume was used in the compound cross-section to experimentally
estimate the discharge and approach velocity coefficients using mainly head measurements and cross-section dimensions
as required by the stage-discharge equations. The independent variables used in predicting the two coefficients
represent dimensionless parameters defined using the gauged head at the head measurement section, floodplain depth,
length of throat in the direction of flow, and cross-section geometry at the control section. Several statistically-based
analyses were performed to verify the reliability of the developed multi-variable regression models. All deployed
analyses have indicated that the two regression models are associated with high predictive strength. Therefore, the
main contribution of this paper is the development of regression-based models to predict the discharge and approach
velocity coefficients that can be used in conjunction with stage-discharge equations to estimate the flow in a
symmetric rectangular channel with compound cross-section
Evaluating off-the-shelf software components : a repository selection case study
In this paper we derive and apply a product evaluation process that can be used by software consumers or developers to evaluate and select products or off-the-shelf components without the need for a predefined requirements list. The process consists of eight phases and offers a number of advantages: it needs no requirements list, much of the information generated can be reused, it provides a mechanism to reassess the evaluation and it facilitates the inclusion of additional products or components at any stage during the evaluation process. Repository components are taken as a selection case study to demonstrate the process
Palestinian dry stone structures: an endogenous expression of cultural landscape
This paper aims to discuss the case of an existing architectural feature in the
Palestinian environment: the Palestinian dry-stone structures within the larger framework of
the historical development of the cultural landscape across Palestine. The current status of
these structures is quite alarming, due to several factors, mainly the rapid modernization of
the Palestinian community, the largely unorganized urban expansion seen on the area, lack
of public awareness and the declining importance of agricultural activity within the
Palestinian society and of course the continuing Arab-Israeli conflict. As a result, a large
number of these agricultural structures in this area have been abandoned and destroyed over
the past few decades.
Thus, the paper will analyse the characteristics and importance of this structure
through a review of literature in this field, and provides an analysis of the Palestinian case in
particular. Areas of focus include the importance of the dry stone structures and its role in
Palestinian agricultural development and the culture generally, its architectural structure,
patterns and types, and the materials and techniques of its construction. Furthermore, the
paper illustrates the status and condition of the surviving structures and concludes with the
future challenges and potentials of their preservation and developmen
