    The association of depression and fatigue with quality of life among Palestinian patients with cancer

    Purpose: To explore the relationships between depression, fatigue and QoL among patients diagnosed with cancer in the West Bank. Method: This was a descriptive, correlational study. 172 patients with lung, breast, colon, prostate and stomach cancer participated in the study. Depression, fatigue and quality of life were assessed for patients who undergoing chemotherapy. All instruments were reliable and valid. Results: The mean score for depression was 22 (SD=8). This indicated that many patients in this study experienced depression. The participants had moderate fatigue 51 (SD=39). The same results were found in quality of life dimensions, as the mean score for functional scales and global health status ranged from 50 to 73 and for symptom scales ranged from 27 to 45. Regarding the correlation, the results showed that there were significant correlation between depression and fatigue and all quality of life dimensions (all p<0.05). Conclusion: Depression and fatigue were significantly correlated with QoL. The impact of depression should be taken into consideration by health care workers when designing or planning interventions to improve QoL for patients with cancer through accurate and early assessment. The moderate fatigue that patients with cancer experienced by the disease or by the treatment should also be taken into account. Each one of the key variables negatively affects QoL in separate. The occurrence of them simultaneously may increase the worse effect on QoL for patients with cancer. Based on that, depression and fatigue should be assessed for each patient with cancer.Birzeit Universit

    Physico-chemical properties of multi-floral honey from the West Bank, Palestine

    Honey is a nutritious product that is produced by honey bees. Its nutritional value and genuine quality is of great importance to consumers. The present study aimed at evaluating the physico-chemical properties of Palestinian multi-floral honey from the West Bank. For this purpose, a total of 33 honey samples were collected directly from honey beekeepers in different geographic regions of the West Bank and analyzed for pH, moisture, relative density, total sugars, reducing sugars, sucrose, fructose, proteins, ash, hydroxymethylfurfural, and mineral content. The mean physico-chemical contents were: pH = 3.44, moisture = 16.53%, relative density = 1.424, reducing sugars = 78.86%, sucrose = 4.10%, fructose = 38.29%, proteins = 0.33%, ash = 0.14%, and hydroxymethylfurfural = 12.32 mg/kg. Cd and Pb were below detection limits in all samples analyzed. Honey samples were rich in K, Na, Ca, Pb, and Mg with concentrations ranging between 183.86 mg/kg (K) and 22.74 mg/kg (Mg). Other trace elements (Fe, Li, B, Mn, Ba, Zn, Cu, Cr, and Ni) were found in much smaller concentrations between 5.21 mg/kg (Fe) and 0.08 mg/kg (Ni). In conclusion, the results of physico-chemical analysis of Palestinian multi-floral honey indicated purity and good quality that meet the international honey standards

    Formulation and evaluation of oral biphasic drug delivery system of Metronidazole using HPMC polymer

    In the present study, a newly innovative drug delivery system of biphasic Metronidazole (MTZ) tablet has been studied. An attempt was made to improve the patient’s adherence and the potential clinical outcomes by reducing the dosing frequency by formulating bilayer tablets containing Metrodinazole. Each bilayer tablet is composed of a sustained release (SR) layer and an immediate release (IR) layer for rapid drug release. Five different formulations of bilayer tablets were formulated using HPMC as hydrophilic polymer to retarded the drug release and the effect of Starch and MCC on the release profile were evaluated. Wet granulation method was used to prepare granules of the immediate and sustained release layers. The tablets were evaluated for their physical parameters and all valuesobtained found to be within the acceptable limits. The dissolution test has been carried out using the USP type II rotating paddle. Collected samples were analyzed using the high performance liquid chromatography. The mechanisms of Metrodinazole release from the sustained release layer were fitted into zero-order, first order, Higuchi, Hixon- Crowell model and Korsmeyer-Peppas release model. The results of the dissolution profiles showed that the drug release from the sustained release layer varied depending on the amount of HPMC and the presence of Starch or MCC. The kinetics of the release of MTZ from the different formulations showed good fitting with Higuchi model with correlation coefficients (R2) of 0.9965 - 0.9985. From values obtained for the diffusional exponent, n, Korsmeyer-Peppas equation observed that for all the formulations n value ranged from 0.4662 to 0.5370, and this demonstrates that the releasemechanism followed non-Fickian type of release ( anomalous transport)

    Contrasting cardiovascular mortality trends in Eastern Mediterranean populations: Contributions from risk factor changes and treatments

    Background: Middle income countries are facing an epidemic of non-communicable diseases, especially coronary heart disease (CHD). We used a validated CHD mortality model (IMPACT) to explain recent trends in Tunisia, Syria, the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) and Turkey. Methods: Data on populations, mortality, patient numbers, treatments and risk factor trends from national and local surveys in each country were collated over two time points (1995–97; 2006–09); integrated and analysed using the IMPACT model. Results: Risk factor trends: Smoking prevalence was high in men, persisting in Syria but decreasing in Tunisia, oPt and Turkey. BMI rose by 1–2 kg/m2 and diabetes prevalence increased by 40%–50%. Mean systolic blood pressure and cholesterol levels increased in Tunisia and Syria. Mortality trends: Age-standardised CHD mortality rates rose by 20% in Tunisia and 62% in Syria. Much of this increase (79% and 72% respectively) was attributed to adverse trends in major risk factors, occurring despite some improvements in treatment uptake. CHD mortality rates fell by 17% in oPt and by 25% in Turkey, with risk factor changes accounting for around 46% and 30% of this reduction respectively. Increased uptake of community treatments (drug treatments for chronic angina, heart failure, hypertension and secondary prevention after a cardiac event) accounted for most of the remainder. Discussion: CHD death rates are rising in Tunisia and Syria, whilst oPt and Turkey demonstrate clear falls, reflecting improvements in major risk factors with contributions from medical treatments.
