The prognostic value of a new lef t bundle branch block in patients with acute myocardial infarction: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    No full text
Objective: To assess the prognostic value of new left bundle branch block (LBBB) in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Background: LBBB develops in many cardiac conditions, including AMI. The empirical evidence for the contribution of LBBB to mortality in AMI is not consistent. Methods: Medline, PubMed, CINAHL, and EMBASE were searched. Inverse variance meta-analysis was performed with odds ratios as the effect estimates. The I 2 statistic and risk of bias were assessed. Results: Eight studies involving 105,861 participants were eligible. New LBBB was associated with higher mortality at 30 days (OR: 2.10, 95% CI 1.27 to 3.48) and 1-year follow up (OR: 2.81, 95% CI 1.64 to 4.80), and increased heart failure risk (OR: 2.64, 95% CI 1.84 to 3.77). Conclusions: AMI patients with new LBBB are a high risk group and must be treated accordingly. Yet, more research is needed given the limitations of studie

Urban acupuncture and the ecological transportation hub, Ramallah, Palestine

Urban Acupuncture, a term foiled by Barcelonan architect and urbanist Manuel de Sola Morales, aims at identifying weak or sensitive spots in the city that are left untreated or marginalized in terms of social, economic and ecological factors. Those spots are then treated using urban acupuncture by developing small scale alternatives to help release the stress of the city, similar to that of traditional Chinese acupuncture, and by that creating a rebel effect that functions on a larger urban context. [1] This project will address the identification of the one of several parcels of public lands of the city of Ramallah for the design of an ecological public transportation hub within the existing city fabric. This parcel shall function as a part of the series of spots selected within the city in order to achieve a sustainable urban environment. Using the GIS data present about the transportation of the city of Ramallah, the types of lands, and their locations will help us in pinpointing the main spot for the transportation hub in the city that can be of use to our study. “GIS helps highlight the transportation system's reach, coverage, modal relationships, key corridors, and relationship to our nation's economic activity and environment”. The analytical scheme used in the project The Evolution of the Discourse of School Mathematics (EDSM) was developed to analyse the change over time in examination texts. An adapted version of the EDSM scheme has been deployed to analyse the nature of mathematics construed in Palestinian schools’ textbooks and the mathematical activity expected of students in the geometry textbooks for students aged 10 to 16 years. The adaptation includes adding further tools for analysing visual components of texts, as well as accounting for some differences between English and Arabic. This article outlines these adaptations and illustrates the use of the adapted scheme with a different genre of texts from those studied in the EDSM project. Some of the challenges in the adaptation process in relation to Arabic mathematics discourse are discusse

The influence of corporate governance on corporate performance: evidence from Palestine

    No full text
The objective of this study is to explore the relationship between corporate performance and corporate governance by companies listed on the Palestinian Stock Exchange. Accounting and market performance measures were used to proxy corporate performance. Corporate governance represented by the board of directors’ size, the frequency of the annual meetings of the board, existence or otherwise of an audit committee, institutional investors ownership and foreign ownership. To achieve the objective of the study, all non-financial companies listed on the exchange and published their annual reports during the period between 2010 and 2012 were used. The result of the analysis revealed that corporate performance is negatively associated with corporate governance. This implies that the result is inconsistent with agency theory. This might be due to the fact that corporate governance in Palestine is still at its infancy stage
