Revitalizing urban voides by using GIS

    No full text
This report is mainly discussing the urban voids that formulated over time in a chosen study site, which is Ramallah especially in the city center as it considered nowadays a metropolitan city and one of the biggest cities in Palestine. Urban voids considered as a lost for any city because the affect the city negatively. So starting from here our goal is to determine which are the best urban voids in the mentioned area to be transformed into recreational nodes by following specific criteria. These recreational nodes will be pocket gardens, playgrounds for schools, parks , extensions for cafes, resting areas and recreational areas...et

Testing the Validity of Capital Assets Pricing Model: Evidence from Palestinian Exchange Market

    No full text
Article in : Journal of Accounting, Finance and Economics, Vol. 6. no. 2. September 2016, pp. 99 –107This study aims at investigating the relationship between risk and return for the listed stocks in Palestinian exchange market. Moreover it also examines the validity of capital assets in Palestinian stock market. Thus, ordinary least square (OLS) is used to analyze data variables and to test the research hypotheses. The empirical result reveals that the intercept term of individual companies is insignificantly different from zero and the slope is equal to the excess return of market index. This result proves significant relationship between risk and return. Moreover, the findings conclude that the higher beta is not associated with higher level of individual stock return. This indicates that the securities market line has non-linearity relationship between risk and return. It means that CAPM is not a good predictor for stock prices in Palestinian exchange market over the selected sample period. Therefore, this relationship is not quite enough to compensate investors for their market risk because systematic risk shows a nonlinear relationship with returns during the period of study. Thus, this paper recommends other sound assets pricing model in predicting future stocks return

Corrigendum : phase behavior of bicontinuous and water/diesel fuel micro emulsions using nonionic surfactants

    No full text
Bicontinuous and water in diesel microemulsions were formulated using single nonionic alkyl poly glycol ethers combined with hydrophilic alcohol ethoxylates. The phase behavior at temperatures ranging from 0 to 50 was investigated. Visual inspection as well as cross polarizers were used to detect anisotropy. The fish phase diagrams were determined. The presence of the hydrophilic alcohol ethoxylates was necessary to initiate both types of microemulsions. Increasing the hydrophobic chain length of the surfactant led to a wider range of temperature stability at lower surfactant concentration. Meanwhile increasing the ethylene oxide units in the head group by two units led to a phase diagram that is dominated by lyotropic liquid crystal. The formulated water in diesel microemulsions were tested experimentally in a 4-cylinder diesel engine, from which it is observed that the emissions of NOx, soot, and CO2 were reduced substantially compared to neat diesel, while for the CO the reduction occurs just at low load

Optimized Operation of PV/T and Micro-CHP Hybrid Power Systems

    No full text
Specialists generally agree that Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) will play a key role in the next generation power systems. Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels are very important energy conversion methods, yet they suffer from low energy conversion efficiency, availability issues and fluctuating output. Photovoltaic/Thermal (PV/T) has been introduced as a way to increase the efficiency of the system by utilizing the co-generated heat. Combining PV/T with Combined Heat and Power (CH P ) units is considered as a promising approach to encounter the intermittent and availability issues of solar energy. Smart grids, on the other hand, create opportunities for intelligent coordination between the different elements in the power grid. In this technologically focused paper we study the optimal operational strategies of coupled DERs and storage within different scenarios. At the beginning we show the optimal sizes of different components, taking into consideration loads and investment costs. We introduce an approach to optimize the usage of the battery in which a controller tries to hold the battery near the optimal level and avoids unnecessary discharge operations. Furthermore, we explore the usage of feed-forward artificial neural networks to Abdalkarim Awad [email protected] Peter Bazan [email protected] Reinhard German [email protected] 1 Computer Networks and Communication Systems, Department of Computer Science, University of Erlangen, Martensstr 3, 91058 Erlangen, Germany estimate the demand. Starting with simple setups (i.e., only PV and Battery) and going then to more complex setups (i.e., with μCH P), we have shown through comprehensive simulation studies that it is possible to enhance the profit when the optimized approach is applied

Tools for Internationalizing higher education in developing countries

    No full text
The global nature of modern economy is impacting higher education. Graduates are frequently finding employment away from home countries. Producing graduates able to compete on the global scale is essential HEIs. In poorer countries, sending students out on massive scale is not practical. We discuss a suite of initiatives to bring international education to local students in a developing country context. This includes internationalizing curriculum and quality assurance; recruiting prominent scholars to teach courses, maybe jointly with local staff, with the associated interactions with local faculty and students; and joint programs with international schools. Indicators of success for these initiatives include student/faculty exchanges, joint research work, subsequent joint projects, international accreditation, and continued demand for these initiatives. We address the academic restructuring needed to fit these activities into regular academic commitments; challenges faced and solutions devised; the degree to which the goals were achieved and the sustainability of the effort

Characterisation of septage in partially sealed cesspit

    No full text
The alteration of wastewater from an individual home under anaerobic conditions in a partially sealed cesspit over the filling period of four months, and the pollution fluxes were assessed. The septage was much more concentrated than raw wastewater. A mass balance found percentage (%) removal rates for biological oxygen demand (BOD5, 78%), chemical oxygen demand (COD, 62%), total nitrogen (TN, 52%), PO4 3 -P (67%) and total suspended solids (TSS, 69%). The percentage (%) pollution loads of emptied septage were BOD5 (22%), COD (38%), TN (48%), PO4 3 -P (33%) and TSS (31%). The heavy metal content in septage was not complying with regulations for wadi disposal and effluent reuse in agriculture. Most of the TN removed, equal to 52% of the TN load to the cesspit, will most likely have infiltrated into the surrounding soil, and might reach the groundwater. Therefore, cesspits that are widely applied should be urgently replaced by proper on-site or off-site wastewater management system
