An article published in Journal of Women of the Middle East
and the Islamic World, 15 (2017) pp. 31–50
This study shows the important place of Muslim women in the civil society of Jerusalem during the period 1831-1841 via their right to own and use property according to their own volition. i have analyzing these issues according to the following questions: what was the attitude of local society with respect to Muslim women's rights to dispose of their assets as they saw fit? was this accepted by local society or not

Semi-presidential government in Egypt after the Arab Spring : insights from the Weimar Republic
Contemporary interest in the so-called ‘Arab Spring’ extends beyond the study of constitutional law or the field of legal studies more generally. One cross-cutting topic that has attracted the attention of jurists and non-jurists alike is the wave of constitutional changes that have accompanied the revolts that have occurred in many Arab countries since 2010. This scholarship generally either discusses constitutional changes in one country in particular or situates it within wider regional or international context. This paper focuses upon Egypt’s “semi-presidential government”, it draws upon scholarship that has been produced by both lawyers and non-lawyers. Specific emphasis will be placed upon constitutional articles that were introduced or re-confirmed, and which are essential preconditions if a system of government is to be considered semi-presidential. In addition, the article will also focus upon the question of how this constitution and regime impact upon the separation of powers, the rule of law and associated rights and freedoms
Wild wheat to productive drylands: global scientific practice and the agroecological remaking of Palestine
This paper traces how scientific research on wheat (Triticum) worked to establish Palestine as a region
sought for colonization. Recent work in geography has refined our understanding of agricultural expansion as an outcome of colonization, however, this work leaves the place-making capacity of agricultural research largely unexplored. My claim is that rather than a byproduct of colonization, wheat research served to remake Palestine as a biophysical region in need of improvement and colonization. I show how a shift in the plant sciences from research in taxonomy to plant breeding corresponded to an
agro-climatic shift on Palestine from an undesirable, arid region to a promising dryland agricultural
region. In this way, wheat research drew Palestine and the United States into a wider effort to transform
arid areas into agricultural drylands. Drawing on a previously unexplored episode of technical cooperation between researchers in the United States and Palestine, I argue that we must examine how wildness native-ness, and agro-climatic suitability are scientifically constituted within and not apart from colonial conquest. In doing so, the paper calls for reconsideration within geography and political ecology of the place-making relationship between colonization and scientific practic
Effect of land-use/land-cover change on the future of rainfed agriculture in the Jenin Governorate, Palestine
An article in International Journal of Global Environmental, Vol. 16, Nos. 1/2/3, 2017Land cover has been changed by humans throughout history. At the
global level, population growth and socio-economic development have a
significant impact on land resources. Recently, scholars added climate change
as one of the major factors affecting land-cover transformation. In the West
Bank of Palestine, the situation is more complicated, where geopolitical
constraints due to the Israeli occupation and lack of control over land resources.
In the West Bank, fertile land represents 16%, 87% of the cultivated land is
rainfed, 11% is pastureland and 2% is irrigated. This paper focuses on the
problems of agricultural land shrinkage by time and tries to reveal the major
factors behind this change. The study area is Jenin, a major agricultural area in
the West Bank, Palestine. Statistical data, aerial photos and related attribute
data were analyzed by using GIS software. The study showed that urban
growth is the major threat on agricultural lands
Time to act on diabetes mellitus prevention in the West Bank, oPt : current and future direct cost of diabetes and its complications
An article in journal : Obesity Medicine 6 (2017) 18-22Aims: To estimate current and future direct cost of diabetes and its complications for the period 2010 and 2030. Methods: This study is a prevalence-based approach that combines model-based forecasts of diabetes prevalence rates from the validated OPT IMPACT Diabetes forecast model, diabetes complications prevalence rates and health care costs and economic data. We use a societal and health care perspective and a time horizon to 2030, and costs were estimated as international US dollar adjusted for Purchasing Power Parity (PPP). Results: The estimated direct costs for diabetes per person in 2012 was 1087 PPP dollars (281-1895 PPP dollar) and the direct costs of diabetes and its complications was 2156 PPP dollar (981-4508 PPP dollar). The estimated diabetes direct cost for the year 2012 was 184 million PPP dollar (47e320 million PPP dollar). The cost is expected to increase to 209 million PPP dollar (54e364 million PPP dollar) in 2015, 248 million PPP dollar (64e432 million PPP dollar) in 2020 and 300 million PPP dollar (77e523 million PPP dollar) in 3030 with 3% discounting rate assumption. The estimated direct cost of diabetes complications is 365 million PPP dollar in 2012, 491 million PPP dollar in 2020 and 595 million PPP dollar in 2030. Conclusions: The burden of diabetes and its complications on the Palestinian health system is huge and actions are needed to address the increasing prevalence of obesity on one hand and providing proper diabetes management on the other hand
Policy-relevant context of waterpipe tobacco smoking among university students in six countries across the Eastern Mediterranean Region : a qualitative study
Article in : Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention, Vol 18, no. 9, pp. 2533-2540background: Waterpipe tobacco smoking rates in the Eastern Mediterranean region are some of the highest
worldwide, especially among young people. This study aimed to improve our knowledge of the policy-relevant context
of waterpipe smoking among six countries in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Methods: In-depth interviews were
conducted in Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, and the United Arab Emirates. Participants were young adult
university students (18-29 years) from both genders who had ever smoked the waterpipe, recruited from universities
participating in this study. Directed content analysis was used to analyze the transcripts. Results: A total of 53
in-depth interviews were conducted in Arabic in 2016. Findings were organized around 5 themes: waterpipe product
characteristics; patterns of waterpipe smoking; the waterpipe café setting; perceived health consequences; and health
warning labels. Waterpipe smoking was commonly perceived as a safe alternative to cigarettes. Waterpipe tobacco was
reported to be widely accessible and affordable to young participants. There is a lack of knowledge among waterpipe
smokers about the associated health effects. Warning labels are effective at communicating health risks associated with
waterpipe smoking. Conclusions: Regulatory frameworks for waterpipe tobacco smoking should be developed and
enforced, including waterpipe-specific health warning labels that elucidate the harmful effects of waterpipe smok
The matrix : rights, government and daily life in Palestine
For Palestinians, governance depends on where you live and who you are. Efforts to fix this situation often end up only entrenching it further
Classifying processes and basic formal ontology
Unlike what is the case for physical entities and other types of
continuants, few process ontologies exist. This is not only because
processes received less attention in the research community, but also
because classifying them is challenging. Moreover, upper level categories
or classification criteria to help in modelling and integrating lower level
process ontologies have thus far not been developed or widely adopted.
This paper proposes a basis for further classifying processes in the Basic
Formal Ontology. The work is inspired by the aspectual characteristics of
verbs such as homeomericity, cumulativity, telicity, atomicity,
instantaneity and durativity. But whereas these characteristics have been
proposed by linguists and philosophers of language from a linguistic
perspective with a focus on how matters are described, our focus is on
what is the case in reality thus providing an ontological perspective. This
was achieved by first investigating the applicability of these characteristics
to the top-level processes in the Gene Ontology, and then, where possible,
deriving from the linguistic perspective relationships that are faithful to
the ontological principles adhered to by the Basic Formal Ontolog
Application potential of small-scale solar desalination for brackish water in the Jordan Valley, Palestine
This paper investigates the feasibility of using solar energy coupled to reverse osmosis (RO) units for the desalination of brackish water in the Jordan Valley, the food basket for the West Bank, Palestine. Pilot-scale RO units are appropriate because of the low energy requirement, market availability, size and area and convenience of installation in the Jordan Valley’s harsh conditions. The study concerned the Marj Naajeh desalination unit. The economic feasibility was compared to other alternative energy sources (diesel generators and network electricity). The environmental costs were considered as well as the economic costs. The results obtained suggest upgrading 162 agricultural wells of different water capacities and quality. Further studies on design capacity and efficiency of future desalination facilities would be beneficial.European Desalination Society Secretariat, Italy and the Higher Council for Innovation and Excellence, Palestin
